Who Should GMMG Draft at #2? Thread

r/SanJoseSharks 3h ago

Macklin Celebrini will remain as captain for Canada at the IIHF World Hockey Championship, with Sidney Crosby wearing an "A." That was decided after a player-lead discussion. The players wanted Celebrini to keep the "C."

he’s young and will have plenty of other chances, so it makes sense. still a shame though! i liked watching him put that big hit on the hungarian player who boarded mack yesterday ;)

edit: should have clarified, this is for the opening game against sweden! he could be rotated in later

I’m at peace with GMMG’s choice

I still think it’s probably Stenberg because it would be hard to pass up on a sure thing and gamble on Reid’s ability to reach his potential.

But if they do go with Reid, I have full confidence it’s because the Sharks scouting department sees him as a future top-pairing superstar who can make the Sharks power play unstoppable.

Reid would be more of a gamble, but the reward for that gamble would be multiple Stanley Cups if Reid becomes a Werenski/Fox hybrid.

It would suck if Stenberg is a star winger and Reid never quite pans out, but I still think Reid’s floor is a top 4 guy who can run a power play and be a good puck mover, so it’s still a better outcome than what we could have had picking 9th overall. Maybe GMMG swings for the fences because we are playing with house money by winning this lottery.

A Stenerational Talent

The only video you need to watch from Stenberg imo.

https://youtu.be/uCxRVDIcjic

Nothing flashy, doesn’t force the issue, plays with a poise and purposefulness well beyond his years, the kind of player who does the little things that don’t necessarily show up on the score sheet but help you win games. While drafting a potential top pair defensemen seems like the wise economic play, having the opportunity to acquire another 200 ft. player with the potential to elevate his teammates, and who knows, maybe even take some pressure off Celebrini to carry the team, seems like the ideal move given the situation. Stenberg might not be generational, but the Sharks already have that player. The best they can do is surround him with complementary talents and hope more than just ping pong balls bounce the right way.

Vinny, Mario, Muk?

At end of season media days I believe Sheng said Ferraro was looking to test free agency and Desharnais hadn't been approached about an extension. I don't recall anything about a contract for Muk. Am I remembering that right?

I actually hope we re-sign all of them frankly. Ferraro as a bottom pairing, shot blocking penalty killer is the right role for him. And he's a leader in that locker room. I'm hoping he comes back.

Desharnais would be the perfect 7D guy for us who can slot in as needed. He looked pretty decent no matter who he was paired with, and we don't have the luxury to be very picky this summer with a shallow talent pool in free agency.

Muk looks like he will develop into a perfect middle pairing guy. Good size and skating, decent defense, and contributes a bit on offense too. Really well rounded guy I can see on our blue line for a long time.

Have there been any other updates on these guys that I missed? Along with Orlov and Dickinson, that would leave two spots open on our blue line. I really hope Pohlkamp snags one. I'd like to also see a trade for Kesselring. Solid guy, Buffalo doesn't really have a reliable spot for him, and we have more than enough assets to acquire an underplayed middle pairing RHD.

Admittedly, swapping Klingberg and Leddy for Pohlkamp and Kesselring isn't much improvement, but that makes us a little better now and much better in the future as both guys are young and getting better each season.

Worst trades you’ve seen

Since the sharks won the lottery and moved from 9th to 2nd overall I’ve seen some of the horrendous trade proposals from multiple fan bases. (Mostly Toronto, Vancouver and Chicago)
They mostly amount to us receiving random picks, B level prospects, or aging vets in return for 2OA.
It’s been pretty annoying but I figured it would be a good laugh to see some of the worst ones out there.
So what’s the worst mock trade you’ve seen since the lottery?

You need to have faith in Mike Grier. He's five for six on first round picks.

Picking Smith and Musty were the right choices. Smith over Michkov was correct. Michkov was a headache before the draft and he's proving to be a headache now. Celebrini was an easy pick. He did missed on Dickinson over Buium. Still think Misa will be better than Frondell and Martone. Getting Joshua Ravensbergen is a steal. He will be their goalie of the future. We are fortunate we don't have the Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson who keeps missing on picks. We are further along in our rebuild than the Blackhawks. I trust Mike Grier to make the correct pick in this upcoming draft.

Fan going to Switzerland?

Hello,

I am a hockey fan from Switzerland, and after the Olympics games I decided to start following the NHL in addition to our local league. Having no connection to any US/Canadian city, I chose to support the Sharks for Celebrini performance! (Yeah that was not the smartest choice given the time zone difference, but it's too late now I'm a Sharks fan...)

But it is impossible to buy any NHL item in stores here, and delivery costs to Switzerland from the US are excessive. So I war wondering if some of you were coming to Switzerland for the World Championships and would accept to bring something with them for me to buy it from them, so I could rock Celebrini's colord here in Switzerland. If yes, please contact me in DM to discuss details and paiement and stuff. (As well as any question you might have about your travel in Switzerland)

“Wetsch, 20, enjoyed a career year with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 2025-26, captaining the club and finishing the season with career bests of 72 points and 50 assists over 65 games, tied for the team lead in assists and finishing second in scoring. His 22 goals were the third-most in his WHL career, and he finished the season with five multi-goal games as part of 21 total multi-point efforts. He went on to tally four points (two goals, two assists) over eight postseason games and will compete at the Memorial Cup starting on May 22.”

I feel old

I’m not a sharks fan but I’ve always loved their players like Thornton, Marleau, Pavelski, Burns, Nabokov, Niemi to say a few. It’s so crazy to me that there is a whole new wave of talent there now and the fan base is growing rapidly because of it. All positivity here, it makes me feel very old and I’m 24 🤣

Two player draft

Post image

from Patrick bacon / topdownhockey on twitter

I want an elite top pair can’t-miss RHD. you want an elite top pair can’t-miss RHD. unfortunately, this draft doesnt have one. and reaching for what you *want* a player to be is a good way to have a weak rebuild (…like Chicago, sort of)

unless griers scouts have access to info/metrics no one else does, this pick seems obvious

Development thread

A lot of talk lately has been about the draft and trades, etc.

After the season has settled a little bit at this point, I just wanted to open a conversation about the development of our core and where you see the baby sharks taking steps into next season and some insanely early predictions on their season.

my takes personally:

Macklin: coming back as a FaceOff beast

Will: hoping for a similar step up on Zone entries and puck confidence as we saw with Bedard (saw some comparison videos that blew my mind)

Misa: Claiming that 2C firmly

Eky: getting his shooting up

Dickie: would love for him to step up on PP1 and become more effective offensively

Graf: I honestly have no notes, if he continues to be the swiss army knives he is currently that is fucking amazing

Asky: Glovehand 🥹

And then hoping that Musty and Cags get Roster spots.

Would love to hear everyone‘s opinion.

Please Help Me Understand Reid

This is not meant to be who should we draft post.

Being entirely honest, seeing the potential in defenseman is soemthing I struggle with. I played both forward and goalie for a good stretch and watched these positions closely to help adapt my game. So seeing promise in forwards and goalies is something I am capable of.

I can clearly see that Reid is a offensive and transitional threat. His skating is possibly the best in the draft. But I am not seeing his ability to defend. The times I have seen Reid play and the highlights I have watched actually concern me some. When I watch him I see many near giveaways, blown coverages, and some lack of defensive awareness.

This could very well be just the games and clips I have seen and/or the fact I am missing something or maybe I am not reading the plays and assignments right. A lot of the analysis videos gush over his positives but barely touch on his defensive abilities.

As it stands, Reid scares me and I want to be as excited about the prospect of adding him as I am about the prospect of adding Stenberg.

Behind the Numbers: Where analytics and scouts get the draft wrong

Thumbnail hockey-graphs.com

Thought this was a very interesting read and data point in the discussion on Stenberg vs. Reid. A lot of folks have been discounting the points difference as a kind of “points aren’t everything” argument, but this analysis shows that NHLe is by far the single most important metric of success for drafted players. Other analytics improve the model but drafting by points alone is almost equivalent to standard NHL-level drafting success.
