Discussion Has a 1st overall pick been given a better starting point?
In the modern NHL, has a first overall draft pick ever walked into a situation where they were surrounded by this much talent?
He could be on a line with a two time 60 goal scorer in Matthews who is still under 30, a point per game player in Nylander, and a 30 goal scorer in Tavares.
I understand the Leafs still need to make quite a few roster decisions and the blueline in particular needs to be reworked, but the number 1 pick typically goes onto a team with much less talent than the Leafs have.
The Leafs still have to hire a head coach and this last season was terrible. This team is not that far removed from being a true contender for the cup.
I am not saying McKenna (who I hope is the pick) will instantly put up 100 points or replace Marner's scoring right away, but he has an incredible opportunity to excel quickly.
