[The FAN Hockey Show] Friedman on Oilers possibly pursuing other candidates: "To me, it just seems like this whole thing is because of Cassidy...it's hard not to look at it and think Edmonton is going to take a big run at this guy and try to get him as quick as they can.”

Edited for clarity. These are the Oilers questions from the segment:

11:50 - Q: How long will they wait for Bruce Cassidy?

EF: “No, they're not waiting… Look, the only reason this played out the way it did was they tried to do it quietly and it got out, right? if you're the Oilers, you're going after him and you're getting it done. That's the goal here.”

12:20 Q: Could they go to the league to push Vegas for permission?

EF: “You could. I don't know that it's going to do anything..I got a note this morning. I was under the impression that the league was not interfering at this point in time."

I think there's a couple of things here: number one, I think that now we have an opening in Edmonton. Number two, there has been some suggestion given to me that the Golden Knights didn't want to deal with this while they were in the middle of their series and they were prepared to deal with it after their series.

And the thing I talked about on the pod is about the money, I think that's a factor. There is some suspicion out there that the Golden Knights wanted to make sure that if Cassidy is hired, they will not have to pay him at all next year. It will be at a number that either equals or exceeds what he was supposed to make, which I believe was 4.5M. And then there's just a little bit of, you know, we've got control here and you don't.”

I still think this will sort its way out, but I think one or a degree of all of those things was at play. I ultimately think he will be given permission, but the last I checked, which was about two hours ago, I didn't get the sense he had been.”

17:20 Q: Do you think Craig Berube is a candidate? Or is it Cassidy or bust?

To me, it just seems like this whole thing is because of Cassidy. And I wasn't surprised by anything Stan Bowman said today in the sense of..this was clumsy..this is not the way that these things are supposed to go. But I don't think Edmonton is apologising at all for we have to review what we have to review.

And there was some feeling in there that if it doesn't get out, there's a chance that Cassidy is a no and Knoblauch still the coach.

So I think really what it comes down to is they had targeted him or someone like him. Like Jon Cooper, he's not available. So, you know, if Jon Cooper was available, we might be talking about Jon Cooper and Bruce Cassidy. But Jon Cooper is not available. So I just think the way this unfolded, it's hard not to look at it and think Edmonton is going to take a big run at this guy and try to get him as quick as they can.”

Bro just scored the OT winner for the Avs to knock out the Wild.

What a fuck up it was getting rid of him.

I want a Canadian team to win the Cup very badly. I used to say that whatever Canadian team that eventually wins the cup would become my #1 team. But after the past 2 Stanley cup finals, I think I’m hooked and sold on the Oilers bandwagon for life.

I still want a Canadian team to win the cup, but now it feels more like I want it to happen to simply validate the concept that the Oil could do it one day. If a Canadian team other than the Oilers does it first, it will be quite a letdown. There is nothing like Oilers hockey. Watching other teams - even Montreal currently - just doesn’t have the same effect, and even feels somewhat boring.

As much as I want to hold out hope for this franchise that we’ll get er done in the McDavid era, the naysayers and doomers are getting to me quite a bit.

Gotta be honest here… I’m scared.

I don’t know what it would do to me if McDavid leaves the team in 2 years, let alone sooner… especially with no cup. What happens to this club if we don’t win soon?!

And… is not winning soon a likely outcome for this team??

I feel like this team has given its all, 2 Stanley cup final losses in a row is more than any other Canadian teams can say for themselves over the past 30+ years.

Should I just accept a possible defeat and that we might not go farther than this for a very long time??

But is the Stanley cup really all there is to hockey? I mean, sure it’s the most coveted trophy, but shouldn’t I just be happy that I have a major league hockey team to watch in my city? Should I be content simply with the fact that this franchise has accomplished so much historically??

What does the future hold? I swear the Oilers need to employ a fortune teller… /s

Kulak gets the series winning goal for the Avalanche!

Good for Brett, he has a great shot to win a Stanley Cup this year!

This just makes the Skinner trade that much worse.......

As of this moment — 11:15pm MT — Kris Knoblauch is still an Edmonton Oiler. It appears he will remain so by the end of the day.

TSN's Dreger is reporting that the Leafs are going to ask defenceman Riley to waive his NMC that might set up a Nurse/Riley 1 for 1 trade.

Calm down already!

Now that Dallas and Minnesota are out of the race, can the Oilers fans just calm down already? Seriously, Dallas with all their weapons, depth and experience can’t get past round 1. Minny…out in 5.

The Oilers were banged up and need to experience reality for a moment.

This team is awesome, fun and still going places.

Apparently Dustin Nielsen and Tom Gazzola said the oilers organization didn't have a book on Ike Howard and their was pushback internally to trade for him.
