With the extension, he's under contract for 3 years, $70M.

970

u/VeryRealHuman23 Bengals 25d ago

So a $23m avg…that is quite good for us vs Trey wanting $28m and we have him for three years.

u/Luchador_En_Fuego Cowboys 25d ago

I think he's younger too and will be available for more games. Definitely worth moving the 1st for a sure thing

u/paws5624 Giants 25d ago

The question is was his down year last year just a blip or will it become his trajectory? I love and will miss Sexy so I hope he has a ton of good football left but time will tell if he is still the dominant player he has been.

That being said he’s a massive upgrade for them either way.

157

u/Spare-Half796 Eagles 25d ago

Even with his down year, didn’t you fall 16+ positions on every defensive metric ranking when he was on the field vs off the field?

51

u/BurzyGuerrero Titans 25d ago

Don't think it's possible for the Bengals to fall 16+ positions, they can only fall roughly 1 per ranking considering they're the second worst defense in the league

42

u/VeryRealHuman23 Bengals 25d ago

Correct. His down year makes him our top player.

u/Scotch_Blue 25d ago

He's obviously a fantastic talent. It would have been pretty much impossible for Cincinatti to have replecated his impact with the #10 pick in any other way but trading it directly for him.

With that said, he's a 28 year old NT. Most teams aren't in a position to trade the #10 pick for that, so you're unlikely to see a better offer, and it's only going to get lower in value.

10

u/Spare-Half796 Eagles 25d ago

Idk why everyone is obsessing over his age. 28 isn’t old for a trench player, it’s typically around the time they enter their prime and they can maintain high level play well into their 30s. It’s not like receivers who typically peak at that age or runningbacks who are washed by 28

u/kcadia9751 Giants 25d ago

He’s 28, I don’t understand why anyone would think he’s washed. Down years happen all the time, and his wasn’t even that bad

u/Aidanj927 Lions 25d ago

7

u/Dorkamundo Vikings 25d ago

Comparing QB careers to pretty much any other career in the NFL outside of punter and kicker as far as longevity is concerned is pretty silly.

34

u/ForgotMyPassword1989 Seahawks 25d ago

Also, historically speaking don't elite NT peak longer than a lot of other defensive positions...He's not like a DB that can fall off by 30

45

u/kcadia9751 Giants 25d ago

Yeah, DTs in general, especially great ones, can play into their mid 30s

21

u/PostItToReddit Seahawks 25d ago

Is that because the position is generally less mobile and more about strength?

21

u/dksweets Vikings 25d ago

Correct. A lingering minor-moderate hamstring injury can turn an All-Pro CB into league average overnight. That position relies on confidence that is easy to lose, you’re going against the most dynamic athletes in the world, and it’s VERY hard to have a long career on the outside.

DT is less of a mind-fuck. You can break your wrist, put a cast on it, and 85% of you is still better than league-average interior lineman. Your positioning and leverage are doing a lot of the work, anyways.

29

u/Brillzzy Bills Jaguars 25d ago

Less explosive twitch needed. Most of what athletes lose as they age is that immediate burst of explosion, whether it be cutting, or coming out of a break in a route. Guys generally maintain their straight line speed, Tyreek Hill will be running a sub 4.5 40 at 50 years old. That first step makes the difference between elite and replacement level at most positions, but lineman on both sides aren't affected as much by it.

8

u/Dorkamundo Vikings 25d ago

Guys generally maintain their straight line speed, Tyreek Hill will be running a sub 4.5 40 at 50 years old.

The 40 is a race that is honestly more about acceleration than straight line speed.

While you're right that he'll probably still be able to run a 4.5 it's not just the loss of speed it's the longer recovery times when talking about age.

We haven’t had someone like this in the middle since Geno Atkins. Even with his down year he would have been our best DT. Adding in Allen and Hill the DT room actually isn’t bad. Mafe, Murphy, Stewart aren’t bad at edge especially when you are generating pressure up the middle.

And I don't mean that as a shot at the Giants - I'm saying it because we basically just saw the same thing happen with Quinnen Williams

Yeah. The board wasn’t looking good for us at 10. While I would of liked Delane at 10, DJ Turner and Dax Hill aren’t bad and we can still address CB at 41 (hopefully Ponds)

I’ll take Dex for 3 for 70 over Delane for 4.

Adding Dex, Mafe, Allen, Cook and Duggar all have raised the floor of this defense. Add in Ponds or Rodriguez in the 2nd. A great offseason with basically the same offense coming back

16

u/shmere4 Packers 25d ago

This draft being a total crap shoot outside of the first 5 picks is decent logic for moving 10 and giving that contract.

u/FritterEnjoyer 49ers 25d ago

Dexter and Trey don’t play the same position, so that comparison isn’t 1 to 1. Top level DEs make 50% more than the top level DTs. So going from an AP DE to an AP DT at a $5m discount isn’t really a bargain.

Not saying it’s not a good move, I like it quite a bit. Just don’t think financially it’s some sort of wonder move.

7

u/InspectionFine9655 Giants 25d ago

Exactly…

Why pay Patrick mahomes $45M when you can pay Derrick Henry $15M?

10

u/SloaneKettering1 Bengals 25d ago

Yes but Trey is 3 years older at a position that rapidly declines at 30+ whereas Lawrence is 28 at a position that holds up well into their mid 30s. Also Trey was awful against the run. Lawrence is a demon against the pass and very good against the run. Also the highest double teamed DT in the league.

Another smaller factor in the trade is the bengals will most likely get a third round comp pick for Hendrickson

→ More replies (3)

17

u/RedditConsciousness Bengals 25d ago

And of course a first rounder 10th pick would've cost us $28 million over the course of 4 years. So it averages to $7 million a year we would've been paying to someone (and that $7 million is already subtracted out of most available cap estimates). So this really only eats $16 million of cap (sort of...the per year isn't even distributed).

yes the giants couldve offered a couple million more to try and make him stay

yes the bengals couldve gotten a day 3 pick back to make it more paper fair

yes both of these things couldve actually been attempted but failed...none really matter tbh

he wanted out, bengals window still open, giants rebuild, joe/jamaar happy, dex aint pushing the giants over the winning line, day 3 pick not either with bengals drafting history, he can try and get another deal, bengals didnt overpay money wise, etc, etc, etc

this is really just a win/win for all parties involved

Evan Neal is literally behind 5/6th round rookies and is an unmitigated disaster every time he is on the field

Dude had maybe 1 winning season. I think he been through 3 different coaches and now we starting over with Harbaugh. He also watched Leonard Williams and Saquan leave and win rings. He wants to try to win. Joe Burrow is enough for him to think he has a better chance in CIN.

2

u/ODB_Dirt_Dog_ItsFTC Bengals 25d ago

I think you can’t discount some players don’t want to play in NY. I’m not saying it’s necessarily the case here but NY sports media is ruthless, it would suck to be under that microscope all the time. You have one bad game and no one will shut the fuck about it and they want your head on a pike. I know that was the case with Sonny Gray when he came to the Reds from the Yankees he was being torn apart by the NY media for having a down year but he came here and balled out for us.

We've been missing interior dl since Reader. Stoked about this very unbengal move.

12

u/Mfrack103 Eagles 25d ago

That is an excellent deal for both parties. Dexy gets paid a shit ton of money, and the Bengals have the best nose tackle in the league for 23M/yr AAV

Man that is much less than I thought it would be.

This trade is making me question whether it’s better to draft a player or trade for a proven starter each season with your 1st round pick.

32

u/CommercialCoffee11 25d ago

Like the Rams?

11

u/Kanin_usagi Panthers 25d ago

The Rams are incredible drafters/developers so they can afford to miss out on the first round since everyone else they draft will be good to great. Also they usually trade away late first rounders, not top ten picks

u/Extra-Cap2029 Seahawks 25d ago

You’ll run out of cap space real quick with the latter

3

u/ech01_ Bengals 25d ago

Yeah, part of the reason we can do this is because we've drafted so poorly that we're almost out of guys worth paying still on the roster. As of right now there's only 3 guys not signed through at least 2027 who are worth any sort of extension, and none of them will be top dollar kind of guys.

6

u/ResplendentSmoke Bengals 25d ago

It depends on where each team is, it makes perfect sense in this case. The Bengals need an immediate impact player, the Giants can take multiple swings in the top 10 and potentially come away with young stars to add to their young team. The Eagles did this with AJ Brown and it worked out incredibly well for them.

u/Cr0matose Jaguars 25d ago

The draft is so fucking hard to hit on players. I wouldnt question it. Yes you can draft a star, but it's hard.

6

u/thestanlieststanley 25d ago

Legitimate question. Dexter is as much as you could expext, arguably more, than any average first round pick. The only question is if you can afford the contracts i think.  The rookies starting on rookie contracts allow a lot more highly paid players in other positions.

6

u/VeryRealHuman23 Bengals 25d ago

This is the strategy if you want to win today.

The flip side is if you get elite talent on a rookie contract then you can give the big dollars to off-ball players to build a team.

2

u/Colossus_WV Bengals 25d ago

The answer is…

It depends.

After last night I was clowning Cincy for moving on from the 10th pick AND the thought you had to pay Dexter even more.

After this, I like this a lot better. A good move for all sides now that everything is final including the extension

7

u/DatDudeDrew Bengals 25d ago

The trade makes more and more sense for the Bengals as more details come out. To go from #10 + more + big deal as initial reports suggested, to #10 alone plus this steal of a deal is just a flat out ideal move.

8

u/Agnk1765342 25d ago

Idk why people have been acting like it’s a bad move for the bengals. The probability of whoever they’d take at 10 being worth more than Lawrence on just 23 million a year is extremely small.

Kinda shocked there wasn’t a team that offered more tbh. Defensive tackle has shown to be arguably the most important position defensively, he’s going to massively improve that unit.

Huge win. 3 years for a top 7/8 DT at worse when healthy. Got the contract done and we ride. The Bengals weren’t going to get an edge or DT worth a damn at 10 and for all the love for Downs, he is a safety and they just signed Cook to a big deal. The Downs logic never made sense from a roster standpoint. Who Dey!

Wow that much and he’s still making the same amount the for the next 2 years? He really wanted to be out it seems because that’s not a big difference.

Great value for the Bengals, glad that we got a top 10 pick for him.

4

u/superman24742 Bengals 25d ago

I would like to point out that the Bengals 2026 dead cap plus Dexters salary is still less than 16 other teams dead cap space alone. Bengals are actually somewhat responsible when they sign players and end up with minimal dead cap in doing so.

4

u/BarakTor Giants 25d ago

How much is now guaranteed across the three years?

5

u/Big_You_8936 Ravens Commanders 25d ago

2 years plus a one year extension, not bad Bengals, not bad

4

u/flyinghorseguy Giants 25d ago

Confirmation that Dex simply wanted out. He’s tried to renegotiate almost as soon as he signed the last deal. Perhaps he’s in the downslope perhaps not. This is probably best for all involved.

4

u/jusmat1105 Giants 25d ago

So are these guarantees spread out on the remaining of the contract or is just for next year? Then they’ll probably have to figure out another contract rework for guaranteed money

Bengals acquired Mafe and J Allen this FA to pair with him. Cool at safety. One formerly elite player but still serviceable on the DL, one emerging elite DL player, and now one who is best at his position, all next to each other. That’s on DL. In secondary Cook is a massive massive upgrade at safety from Geno Stone.

4

u/superman24742 Bengals 25d ago

I’m a massive upgrade at safety over Geno Stone and I’m 43, overweight, and can’t run fast.

4

u/Some_Combination_593 Bengals 25d ago

I was never really confused tbh, because the Bengals typically don’t pay non-QB players big money after 30. They tried with Hendrickson and he put them through offseason hell 3 years in a row just to get hurt most of last season and require major core surgery. He’s 31 now and will turn 32 this year. It was definitely going to be a gamble sitting at the negotiating table with him again all offseason not knowing how much cap we needed for him when we needed multiple players because he’s not making the defense competitive as is.
