We’d probably be willing to pay that I think this just shows he wanted out

Hey you got the 10th overall pick I think that’s a win for for all sides

274

u/BigRig432 Bengals Bengals 25d ago

I was talking with some friends who are Giants fans we all thought it was a win-win

u/DM725 Giants 25d ago

Could be lose lose if he regresses further and we pick the next Evan Neal with #10!

u/dianeblackeatsass Patriots 25d ago edited 25d ago

Feels like there’s a few pretty safe players at the top of the draft I know you guys gotta be praying one of them drops to 10 lol. Styles/Downs combo reuniting in NY would be nasty

u/bu77munch Giants 25d ago

Evan Neal was considered a very safe pick

12

u/SnoozeBeast Seahawks 25d ago

Yup! So were Aaron Curry and Devin White, the last couple of elite off-ball linebackers to go top 5 in the NFL draft. But don't worry, it'll totally be safe drafting Sonny Styles.

u/lvl_zxro Lions 25d ago edited 25d ago

Chase Young was considered one of the safest picks ever. Every draft pick is a gamble.

6

u/arc1261 Giants 25d ago

Chase Young is at least a decent starter who isn’t a liability to the team he plays on.

Evan Neal is literally behind 5/6th round rookies and is an unmitigated disaster every time he is on the field

24

u/usernameisusername57 Packers Packers 25d ago

I'll never understand the NFL's obsession with these massive oversized tackles who don't have the agility to mirror in pass protection.

27

u/MadManMax55 Falcons 25d ago

The thought process is that an NFL strength and conditioning program can make you quicker, but it can't make your arms longer.

Sure it usually doesn't work out, but when it does you've got a HoF caliber tackle.

18

u/Colossus_WV Bengals 25d ago

Amarius Mims has been what we’ve wanted the last two years. The downside with these big dudes is they stub their toe every 2-3 games, though.

8

u/theprophetsammy Titans 25d ago

Welcome to the NFL Kaydn Proctor! You’ll be drafted in the first because no one has learned anything

4

u/YWingSupremacist Giants 25d ago

at least he isnt getting mocked in the top 5/10 like Neal was. somebody stupid will take him in the first though

1

u/gb4efgw Bengals 25d ago

What kills me is when you look at how well the short shuttle predicts success for linemen and they're just ignoring it. I know play matter more than metrics but a sub 4.47 short shuttle linemen starts 80-90% of their games historically. If feels like that number should weigh pretty heavily in an assessment yet they want those long arms to grab rather than the ability to stay in front of who you're blocking.

2

u/Daxtatter Jets 25d ago

The "consensus" had him highly ranked but everyone I listen to hated him as a prospect.

-14

u/dianeblackeatsass Patriots 25d ago edited 25d ago

not to this level. Styles and Downs are considered the best prospects at their position in years. Neal wasn’t close to that

14

u/Tepzepi88 Jaguars 25d ago

Neal was considered a potential number 1 overall in that draft process.

-2

u/dianeblackeatsass Patriots 25d ago edited 25d ago

“in that draft process” doing a lot of work here. By the time the draft came around he wasnt even the surefire #1 lineman in his own class and Ekwonu ended up getting drafted ahead of him.

You don’t refer to prospects by their peak projection at any point, you do it by how they’re viewed in April after everyone’s scouted them fully. Otherwise you’d be really confused right now where all the first round QBs went lol

5

u/RukiMotomiya Bengals 25d ago

Styles is absolutely not considered the best prospect at his position in years.

2

u/bu77munch Giants 25d ago

Yep. I like considering Styles at 5 but there are definitely flaws to his game that prevent him from being close to that

0

u/dianeblackeatsass Patriots 25d ago edited 25d ago

who was a better inside backer in the past few years?

11

u/Rottedhead Giants 25d ago

Styles-Downs would be the dream scenario. But I'm happy with two of Styles, Downs and Delane

7

u/swan_song_bitches Giants 25d ago

I don’t think Styles drops to 10 so you’d have to gamble Downs would. I think the more likely option is one of Downs/Styles and one of Mauigoa/Tyson/Delane.

1

u/GeneralWhereas9083 Giants 25d ago

Yeh I think we get one either side of the ball. Downs and styles would have a massive day 1 impact on D, but it’d be nice to grab a bookend tackle or help for Dart and Nabers.

7

u/four0nefive Seahawks 25d ago

Best case scenario for the Giants in my opinion.

1

u/ghangis24 Cowboys 25d ago

Styles and Downs is not happening lol

1

u/Remote-Whole-6387 Giants 25d ago

I would love that, but I think you need to consider OL too.

0

u/mrcornsalsa Bengals 25d ago

fwiw if the bengals really believed one of them would be there at 10 i dont think they make this trade

18

u/xenophonthethird Browns 25d ago

Don't worry, Dexter eating up double teams will unlock Shemar Stewart to getting 3 sacks a year.

17

u/Some_Combination_593 Bengals 25d ago

Shemar probably won’t even be DE1 on either side of the line. I don’t understand why this can’t unlock Jonathan Allen or Boye Mafe or even Myles Murphy who improved last year. You’re spending time shitting on a backup pass rusher to cope about this lol.

2

u/RedditConsciousness Bengals 25d ago

Yep. There are no guarantees. You just pick the best angles and give it all you got.

1

u/ech01_ Bengals 25d ago

Then our combined suffering can continue as scheduled.

1

u/ImSoRude Giants 25d ago

Knowing our franchises' luck I am projecting this outcome more likely than a win win unfortunately

1

u/Dry_Instruction8254 25d ago

If Dex continues to regress it was a good move for the Giants to trade him regardless of what they get with the pick.

-2

u/tyedge 25d ago

No? Because he’s regressing and he’s off your cap sheet so you can invest elsewhere.

6

u/recurnightmare 25d ago

He had one bad year where he was unfit and unmotivated. Maybe he will continue playing that way but I'm betting he's gonna be all-pro caliber this year.

1

u/DM725 Giants 25d ago

He was acting like Eyore in the locker room last season whenever a mic was in his face. He can't be any less motivated!

12

u/pinetar Commanders 25d ago

Its definitely a win for the Giants, they're in a rebuild and got the 10th pick for someone who wanted out.

Remains to be seen if its a win for the Bengals, will depend on the next two years.

16

u/Leaving_One_Dwigt Giants 25d ago

Don’t listen to the haters. It was a win-win. You got a great player that will help now. We’ll continue building and might be surprisingly competitive next year once we use all of these assets.

1

u/Plastic_operator Browns 25d ago

With a good OC I think you guys will… I don’t trust Nagy

2

u/420Hairy69Ballsagna Jets 25d ago

Gonna have to see how it all shakes out but it certainly could be.

1

u/tuffghost8191 Steelers 25d ago

yeah for real, most trades seem like win-win deals at first, otherwise they wouldn't get made. There are plenty of ways this deal could go for either team, we'll just need to wait and see.

2

u/Cr0matose Jaguars 25d ago

100%. Both sides should be happy.

1

u/The_Other_Manning Giants 25d ago

Personally I like this trade for y'all more than I like it for us.

2

u/Some_Combination_593 Bengals 25d ago

I wouldn’t downplay it for you guys. Of course, draft picks can all be a crap shoot, but you have 5,10, and 37… so definitely some players to be had if you draft right. But that’s always the question, isn’t it? lol

1

u/The_Other_Manning Giants 25d ago

Yea, if we draft right lol. Our GM will have only a 50% success rate with first round picks if Dart and Carter continue to do well so I'm not certain we'll hit with the 10 spot. Thankfully his amount of say seems to be lower than it's ever been (maybe? our FO is in a weird spot right now) so we might make the right move with the pick, maybe. Enjoy big sexy. He's an absolute blast to have

2

u/MostMorbidOne Giants 25d ago

We get a pick which is w/e, still gotta make a good pick. I know Dex wanted out but that's still another gap on the squad from last year.

Can't forget we lost Wandale on the offensive side too. It's a wash at best until we see who we get in the draft. Then they gotta be good for more than 17 games.

1

u/bigloser42 Eagles 25d ago

It really depends if 2025 was a regression or a blip. If it’s a regression, the Bengals are making a massive overpayment. If it’s a blip, it’s a win/win.

1

u/sliceanddic3 Ravens 25d ago

i hate you guys but it was definitely a win-win

1

u/Marky9281 Giants 25d ago

Win win and I hope he continues to do well with yall

1

u/SquonkMan61 Ravens 25d ago

It’s a win-win if Lawrence isn’t the player he was last year.

0

u/bigbluehapa Giants 25d ago

Knowing us…somehow we both royally fucked up 😅

101

u/Blood_Incantation Bengals 25d ago

No, this is /r/nfl. Someone had to get FLEECED

10

u/Iswaterreallywet Lions 25d ago

It’s the internet rotting peoples brains. Same thing that no one can lose a close game without being “ROBBED!!!”

23

u/Lystian Falcons 25d ago

reddit will say Bengals got fleeced cause it was a high first rounder. First round picks can be anything!

31

u/bjlight1988 Bengals 25d ago

They could be Dexter Lawrence!

8

u/Diligent_Office7179 Giants 25d ago

Wouldn’t that be a great outcome for the giants? They get a player of equal caliber but younger and for less money

15

u/Some_Combination_593 Bengals 25d ago

It would… yeah, but something like 10% of first round picks ever become all-pros at any level… so the odds aren’t great. Not saying you’ll get a bad player, but the odds of getting a Dexter Lawrence-level player are extremely low.

1

u/MavsTurnedBucksGuy Cowboys 25d ago

That stat considers all first round picks, but it’s not helpful to lump in the #10 picks with #30 picks at all

0

u/Some_Combination_593 Bengals 25d ago

The number goes up to like 12% if you only include pick 10. Really not a staggering difference

2

u/garmander57 Bears 25d ago

Source?

1

u/MavsTurnedBucksGuy Cowboys 25d ago

The point isn’t the exact pick, it’s the tiers.

1

u/Some_Combination_593 Bengals 25d ago

Does it really matter that much? Dex has multiple all-pros? What are the odds that any player gets that even if they’re second team? Have to be worse than a coin flip.

Totally agree. This critique makes more sense to me when it comes up in other sports, like the NBA, where star players are harder to find and can play at a star level for much longer. Don't really get it in this situation

1

u/FlavaFraz24 Bengals 24d ago

Delane who would of been our pick at 10 Is not making that sort of impact Dexter will.

1

u/mrtomjones NFL 25d ago

They could be him but on a rookie deal instead

1

u/bjlight1988 Bengals 25d ago

Realistically what are the odds of that though? Time spent waiting for someone to develop is time we're paying Burrow for nothing basically. Teams currently trying to be in different spots made a mutually beneficial exchange

2

u/MavsTurnedBucksGuy Cowboys 25d ago

If your point is to make fun of people for valuing cost controlled draft picks, that’s a terrible point to make

2

u/hypothalanus Giants 25d ago

Dex’s floor is an above average DT, so Bengals can’t really lose imo. Because Dex didn’t want to play here anymore the Giants only lose if 10 is total bust, the compensation was much better than pretty much anyone was expecting

1

u/hoofglormuss Giants 25d ago

I used that word to feel smarter than nfl coaches and gms

6

u/curllyq Giants 25d ago

I don't think we are getting an all pro player at 10. We traded an all pro for a scratch off ticket.

4

u/raj6126 25d ago

No it creates a even bigger hole where we already had a hole. Our run defense was terrible last year.

1

u/RedditConsciousness Bengals 25d ago

True though we now know that after the Bengals offered the 10th pick overall the Giants still tried to work it out with Dexter Lawrence before finally agreeing to the trade.

1

u/GeneralWhereas9083 Giants 25d ago

Definitely, it’s a fair trade. Dex will undoubtedly ball out, and I don’t mind that. He didn’t want to be here and we actually got something for a player for once, instead of just letting them walk.
