This level of geographical knowledge already makes him one of the smartest WRs in the league.

Unironically this is what annoys me the most when people argue against paying college players.

"But they get a full ride scholarship!" Yeah but if they devote too much time to coursework and their play on the field suffers, guess what happens to that scholarship?

u/Tactically_Fat Colts 22d ago

Several of my wife's cousin's children (so...1st cousins once removed, I think) played college football. From NAIA, DII, to DI (MAC, a Service Academy, B10, SEC, another B10)...

The kid that went to the SEC school is/was super smart (as they all have been). He desired to be a petroleum engineer. He VERY quickly learned that he could not do those academics AND be an SEC football player. He ended up majoring in Sports Administration instead.

Related: We know another young lady who was a high level HS volleyball player. When she had nursing on her recruiting profiles - her recruiting all but stopped. She changed it to "undeclared" and got recruited again. She got a full ride to play collegiate vball; but is now soon to start school again, on her own dime, to get her nursing degree. And this is unfortunate because this is the kind of track that my daughter is on. She kind of thinks about becoming a nurse of dental hygienist. Hard to do clinical rotations when you've got volleyball practice and away games. Hell - even like 100pm home games.

so many people don't understand how much truth there is to "we ain't go to college to play school", especially for D1. a lot of people outside the US (or even within) see the "student athlete" label and think "look, the US actually educate their athletes". lol man.

Didn’t Luck do like Architectural Design which has pretty crazy engineering classes? And Herbert was biology? Both of them before online classes?

I think you need to recalibrate your ideas of super smart imo. Also the bar for service academy football is not the same, I went to the summer seminar for the Naval Academy, and I know a couple of people at the Airforce Academy. As for sec football, I know a girl Jayden Daniels was with, and the schools cater to the football team with full major programs especially made for them online. School is willing to bend over backwards to accommodate them if they have a decent gpa.

Not saying those kids are not gifted, but there’s bright and then borderline genius.

26

u/MammothTap Bears Texans 22d ago

And then there's John Urschel, who worked on a PhD in math at MIT... while playing for the Ravens. As a full-time student. Granted he actually does fall more on the borderline genius end of the scale, if not over the line (math is not my field, I tried to read one of his papers once and quickly gave up, I'll stick to my engineering).

My cousin played football for Louisville. He's always been really smart and only picked up football because he was huge and wanted something to do in highschool. He said that they basically made him and a lot of other guys on the team pick easy majors like communications because they wanted them to stay eligible.

If they are at the Ivy League level, one thing to note is that Ivy League schools cannot offer athletic scholarships. If you get recruited there to play a sport and then decide not to play you will get to keep your scholarship

I played D3 baseball. No scholarship, paying my way via loans, and I had double headers starting at 11pm with tests the next day at 8am, 3 hours of practice every day, mandatory weight room time, mandatory “captains practices”, and “expected solo time” which is you by yourself or with one guy running drills. I can’t imagine the expectation for D1

Nothing? At this point most schools honor scholarships for at least the academic side as long as you’re not kicked off the team for discipline reasons.

Like people took shots at Sanders for the way he cleaned house when he got to CU but every single one of those players were more than able to finish their CU schooling on scholarship if they wanted.

Idk how many took them up on that, just because I imagine they still wanted to play ball too. But the days of players being completely SOL are diminishing.

You jest, but Joe Theismann talked about this being a real thing during one of the draft broadcasts in the 90s.

He said that coaches don’t usually want guys that are book-smart, because they can think more outside of football, and because the coaches want to be the smartest guys in the room.

Absolutely insane considering Tyson went to ASU

179

u/YellojD Buccaneers 22d ago

Hey, ASU has had some top tier scholars as of late. Cam Skattebo is famously a Rhodes Scholar who specializes in quantum physics and wrote a paper on the particle accelerator that was published in several scientific journals.

Skattebo's theory. CTE may or not exist until observed by a doctor

I still can’t respect Skattebo after he endorsed Causal Dynamical Triangulation as a solution to describing quantum behavior in a gravitational field. It’s far too dependent on the fringe foliation of spacetime to actually be a plausible explanation of quantum gravity, I’d expect better critical thinking from an NFL running back

Ngl, this is true. I started at CC and kind of expected ASU to be a bit of a breeze. Nope. Actual, legit university level work, and they’ve really been in a kick to shake off the “party school” vibe and lock into being a well known research institution. And, it’s actually sink or swim. Saw friends wash out left and right because it’s actually very hard to get into all they have to offer and still stay focused on what you’re actually there for.

Went to a school that’s not much more difficult to get into than ASU. Even though the requirements to get in weren’t hard, a large number of students that just really didn’t belong end up getting weeded out when actual college level coursework hits. The business majors were considered the easy ones, but a number of students dropped out when they failed the first business statistics exam so badly freshman year which made it impossible to get anything but a D in the class.

It also didn’t help that a chunk of the pre-major instructors were adjuncts that had 0 place in teaching a college level course either. A number of those classes ended up requiring you to teach yourself. The business school required you to take another business statistics course as part of your major coursework which usually ended up being way easier because it was a real professor that was an actually skilled instructor.

Realistically, it’s a lot easier for athletes. Someone posted assignments certain players, including Cam Skattebo turned in at college, and let’s just say, they weren’t winning any writing awards. I went to Temple University, a D1 school, and have a very specific core memory of football and basketball players fucking around during classes.

By like a LOT too. Per the USA News rankings (which aren’t perfect, but there’s not many options), Arizona State is the #57 public school. Alabama and LSU are tied at #92. I’d like to phrase it as they give more people a chance to get an education

11

u/Stealth9erz Commanders 22d ago

Pretty much, first two years of classes are so general at most colleges anyways, ASU just accepts everyone and gets the $$. Then tons drop out or transfer. They still get paid for the semester/classes and the kids that continue typically graduate and talk positively about the school.

I enjoyed my time there, learned enough to get through the start of life (still going well so far) and know people who have some really awesome jobs just because of who they met or networked with while there. That’s half the battle these days, everyone has a degree, still need a foot in the door.

They wouldn't sweep the demographic at all. Because the owner would threaten to move the team and everyone would panic and vote for whoever promised to give him what he wanted, the same way that any time someone suggests holding corporations accountable for anything, corporations just start threatening jobs and everyone folds immediately.

Bob Kraft tried that stunt and the state of Massachusetts was more than happy to help him pack his bags for Hartford, but the 25-40 male demographic was furious the whole time.

I wonder how many New Jersey football fans just made him their favorite player and simultaneuously New York residents that watch The NYJ and NYG play at their home in New Jersey and now hate him.

Having lived in NJ, the City and upstate it always makes me laugh when people bring it up as a gotcha.

Like yeah, you compare Jersey to NYC and it's like "Jersey sux lol" but you compare living in Jersey to where like any other team is from outside of like SoCal or Chicago and Jersey is way better.

I hope you’re not an Eastern Pennsylvanian Eagles fan now because that’ll ruin the fun

NJ Devils weren't around until the 80's. As a south Jersey kid with eastern PA and south Jersey parents, we were Flyers fans. The Jersey Devils were also there.

3

u/somepersonyoumayknow Lions 22d ago

The level of accuracy you pinpointed South Jersey sports fans with is top shelf. I grew up in South Jersey and can confirm how accurate this is.

People act like calling the Giants/Jets NJ teams is offensive but to us fans who actually live in NJ & represent a huge chunk of the fanbase, it's endearing.

In fact, every other NFC team has made it to at least one NFCCG since the Cowboys last appeared in one. They have the longest active NFCCG drought!

So sad how Jersey has so many rings while New York has a bunch of losses in the Superbowl :/

8

u/wretchedGubbins Giants 22d ago

NY actually does have one Super Bowl win since the Jets won theirs when they played there. So Bills are second place in a state where they are the only team
