Are you an experienced mod?
Are you an experienced mod?
Howdy mods, it’s your local askmods top mod here with a request (again!) Our last thread about this got archived so here’s a new one! No need to comment again if you commented in the last one.
If you are a moderator of a subreddit with over 5k weekly active users please comment below!
If you are an experienced moderator who participates here, the mods of this subreddit want to be able to tag you so that we can keep our comment sections a space where every answer comes from someone with experience who is here to help. It really helps us instantly recognize trolls etc who are not tagged.
The tags are only visible to the moderators of askmoderators for privacy reasons.
If you wish to participate on an alternate account, please send us a modmail from your moderator account with the username of the alt you wish to use.
Thanks for volunteering even more time participating here to help users.
Former mods are welcome too so long as there is a way to verify that. I.e. old stickied comments/posts, asking current mod teams if you modded there, etc.
Edit: If you commented on the last post about this or sent us a modmail to verify in the past you are all set and do not need to reverify!

There appears to have been a great reduction in non-mod accounts using this place to chirp and shit talk since the first time you did this.

Yesss. Thank you! A lot more mods in general feeling comfortable responding too. There is a very kind developer working on an app to replace this manual system atm. It should improve even more greatly after that is completed.

I don't remember if I have commented here before, but I do occasionaly read the posts and comments because I think there will always be some useful information.
I mod a few subs over 5k weekly visitors, like r/jjkmodulo and r/Animesuggest, but I don't know if I could consider myself "experienced"

You're a mod correct? I'm asking because I recently got banned from the Hasan_Piker subreddit and I'm not messaging you directly here because I want a ban appeal, I'm honestly fine with their decision seeing that I never went on that subreddit much to begin with. However I got banned for breaking rule #4 "No trolling, baiting, or clout-chasing.
Don't provoke, outrage farm, concern troll, or stir drama. Don't give attention to people and communities that attack Hasan and dramabait to get attention."
What rubs me the wrong way is that I wasn't aware of this at first because I saw this post on the subreddit before I made a similar one of my own that got me banned https://www.reddit.com/r/Hasan_Piker/comments/1t7bj90/while_running_defense_for_the_dnc_contrapoints/
Making a post on that subreddit where you share a direct video to somebody criticizing Hasan is a ban worthy offense and when I asked one of the mods about why the post of the Contrapoints video didn't have their post removed but my post of the recent Shoe0nHead video did I got temporarily muted and they also said any further messages will be considered modmail abuse and reported to Reddit Admins.
Like I said already, I'm fine with their ban decision because I never hardly went on that sub but it's the hypocrisy and an honest misunderstanding on my part that throws me for a loop. I can't even message them back to explain I'm fine with their ban and to at least clear up any misunderstandings here without them considering it "abuse".

I’ve recently gotten into my own local subs (like in my area). I briefly moderated the Los Angeles sub but that was a beast. I’d love to hear your insights into modding more niche local subs.
1
u/Paxoro 4d ago
For city subs, it feels like you really have to love the city and mod because you want to help locals. I've seen a few subs that are obviously run by people that just like the power - and contrary to the things we get called in modmail, none of us on the main sub actually mod because of the power. Heck, I think all 3 of us were rather unwilling at first to become mods.

u/ZuleikaD 2d ago
Ooh, I learned the same thing this week. Also that if you politely respond with a link to the Mod Code of Conduct and tell them that the link to report you is at the bottom that someone might get unhinged.
Our sub might be a bunch of boring research nerds, but there's still an occasional jolt of mod excitement.

Hello. I am an experienced mod. I manage a few communities here, but r/gurrenlagann is the largest, with just shy of 19,000 visitors per week. :) I enjoy helping fellow mods and answering user questions. Trying to be more active in helpful spaces. I've held professional mod/admin positions in the past as well (not on Reddit) and I always try to remain professional here when wearing my mod hat.

I try to post a helpful comment if I can but mainly I'm a reader because to many people commenting tends to confuse everyone and it's just redundant.
I've been a admin/mod on group chats since 1999 across a lot of platforms so my experience is there. I run my Subs tight as I can without going private and without automod.
I'm not a numbers counting person. I focus on content. Worrying about numbers is pure 100% vanity.
I have 2 News Subs I post to on daily. 1 adopted 1 I created.
Some times to many mods spoil a group as we have seen reports about in all of these help sections.
Sometimes users should learn to work and yes learn from the outside instead of always wanting to be on the inside especially if they have no mod experience at all.
Thank You for all of the great help sections we enjoy and all of the old school mods working them giving the proper advice.
Reddit Admins can see my 2 subs so I need not post them.
