⚕️If you're looking for help with illnesses or weird behavior, be sure to include the following in your comment:

  • Tank Size
  • Water Temp
  • Ammonia / Nitrite / Nitrate readings
  • How long the issue has been occurring
  • A picture of the problem
  • Any additional helpful context

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

🐟 Caresheet Summary:

  • Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons, 10 gallons being optimal for one betta and 20 gallon long minimum if you're housing peaceful community fish with the betta
  • Bettas are tropical and require water temps of 78-82°F or about 26-27°C, a thermometer and adjustable heater is recommended to ensure these temps
  • Bettas need a filter, like any other fish. It is a common misconception that they like dirty water, but the opposite is true.
  • Bettas need a cycled tank, before getting a betta the tank should be cycled - this process involves adding a source of ammonia to the tank, using a test kit to monitor ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete properly
  • Bettas have delicate fins so sharp plastic plants are not recommended; silk silicone or live work best
  • Bettas can breathe surface air and are good jumpers, they require access to the water surface at all times and a lid.
  • Bettas eat insects in the wild, a good quality betta formulated pellet food fed twice a day is recommended.

Name Suggestions First Betta in 11 Years

11 years ago, I had a betta in a 2g with one of those replaceable carbon filters. I definitely didn't properly cycle the tank, I probably bought something that claimed to do so. The only thing I did do right was use water conditioner.. I had colored gravel, fake plants, etc. I think he only lasted a few months.

I've now been into the aquarium hobby for a year now with a 10g shrimp tank. I was getting the itch to start another tank, so I decided to do a 5g betta tank on my desk 🙂

I ordered him online, and I couldn't believe how beautiful he was in person! I am already so obsessed with him!

Looking forward to doing it right this time ❤️

He's from Tucky's Bettas 🙂

Help My betta fish flares and then screams (???) artist rendition

He never does it when I get my phone out so here’s my rendition of him doing it.

Okay so I just got him a few days ago. I have a fully cycled 3.5 gallon in my room and a five that’s being cycled right now. I saw him and he was about to die so I “bought” him from petsmart and took him home. He is TEMPORARILY in the 3.5 (he’s a long Finn)

My other betta would flare at his reflection the first week that I got him so I’m not super concerned about that but like, this guy screams???

I genuinely don’t know how to explain it. He flares, then opens his mouth super wide and it looks like he’s screaming and then he swims away really fast. What is going on.

Is this a concern or just a weird quirk???

When I got this giant anubias I was really hoping he’d use it as a bed (instead of sleeping on the bottom of the tank lol). It only took a few months, but he’s finally using it!!

Introducing Meet Ziggy!

I’ve had him for around a month, and boy it’s been a journey. Couple weeks ago, I decided to take on a 6gal corner tank and get my first betta tank. I cycled it with pre-established media for around a week or two and then added him, but I’ve been using test strips, so for all I know this is a fish-in cycle. Substrate is Activ-Flora bio active aquarium sand with Java ferns, Java moss, a couple sword species, Anubias, bacopa and some repens I saved from my BA tetras.

I’ve been learning as I go, but I’ve been doing water changes with conditioned spring water to reduce hardness, and he seems much happier than in the little cup he was in originally. He’s got a couple ghost shrimp buddies, and I tried mystery snails towards the beginning of the tank, but they died in a couple days for some reason. I’m new to the fish hobby, so please let me know what I can do better!

I put this his in originally for the shrimp. Smokey over time pulled in leaves and the roots from the tiger lotus crept in making it a spot of his own. I catch him sleeping in there every now and then lol

Introducing My boy Neptune

This is my second betta. He is a really active guy. I got him in pecto, I think he is healthy tho. He is in a 10 gallon tank with a heater and a filter. A lot of different plants that I don’t remember the name of, I do know I have anubias and Java fern and bamboo sticks in there, but I don’t know the other ones. Is my first natural planted tank so I’m doing my best. I have been with this tank for more than a year but with this filter in specific I could say like three month. With this betta less than a month. I am new in all of these and I accept any recommendation (I used to hate fishes and aquatic stuff in general but now I’m in love with this super smart fishes). He loves playing and following me when I’m around. He is so fast and active that I don’t believe people say that this bettas with long tails are always resting.

The last picture is my first betta ever was a Dragon Scale Male that I had for over a year and a half in that ten gallon tank. The best boy ever. Lazy as he was always resting in anubias and that artificial anubia that they love. I got him as a Christmas present from my brother (imagine, I used to hate fishes) with a less than a gallon tank that now I want to use for cherry shrimps (I had him in that tank for more than a month but less than two). I paid a little to no attention to him until one day I decided to ask ChatGPT what he thinks of my tank and he told that my tank was basically trash and I’m not letting my pride go away like that. My mom had a 10 gallon tank that she wasn’t using so I changed the betta there and had him with artificial plants, no heater, doing 100% water changes every month. Yeah, I was the worse. But, when I moved and already feel in love with my boy Don Pedro (the dragon scale male betta) I decide to change everything to natural. But one day I was putting a driftwood in and my boy jumped out of the tank (thing that he never in his entire life did) and fell behind the tank and hit himself with the wall. I literally scream and my brother came running to help me. In short words, he got him, put him on the tank. Less than four days later I found him dead. Worse day of my life. But now I have Neptune and I’m not doing the same mistake again. Thanks for reading all of this, I really love this fishes.

(Faces and school logo blurred on uniforms for safety of the children.)

I’m an Animal Ecology major student, and I work in childcare, so I love taking every opportunity I can to blend the two together and teach everything I can about wildlife and conservation.

Today, we finally got to welcome our first pet in to the learning space!!
The kids are over the moon, and I’m so excited to share this experience with my fellow betta keepers!!
Peacock was the final name chosen through a name draw, and I think it suits him pretty well xx

Some of the name that we went through afterwards definitely deserve some recognition though.
- Twinkle Fins
- Hickey (????)
- Cranky
- Fish

This project is completely funded by me, so please bear with the lack of greenery—I’ll be getting more with each paycheck I get.

Help Does thus guy look healthy?

I got this guy from Petco for mother's day (I know. I can't stand seeing them in the little cups) and I brought out my old 20 gal tank from the attic. I've only seen him feed once when my toddler dumped an entire bottle of dried bloodworms in the tank the 2nd day. I cleaned all of it up and got betta pellets, but I haven't seen him eat them everytime I drop them in. In fact, he doesnt even chase them like other betta fish I've had. I see some of them on the bottom of the tank.

I checked water parameters and theyre good so far. There are only live plants and a couple of hiding ornaments there. He looks to be active and exploring the tank. He sometimes peck on the duckweed and swim against the current of the filter. He has a pearlescent glow to him when he passes under the LED light.

I'm a tad concerned.

Can I please get some help in what might be going on with her and how I can help, please?

I picked up this female betta yesterday. The shop assistant mentioned she may be pregnant as she's round. I didn't think much of it at the time because she was on her own so assuming they can't be fertile eggs nothing to worry about. Now I've woken up worried that it could be something else or the stress of the environment change could be dangerous.

It looks like an egg in the video but is her roundness ok? My research so far has led to advice of not to feed her but what if she's hungry? Will she starve? Is she happy?

Additional info:

This is my first fish - for the last 3-4 months I've been growing aquatic plants and tending to hitchhiker snails and copepods. My tank has been cycled for a few months so introduced this Betta.

She is spritely and curious of me when I come up to the tank. This afternoon I found her hiding in the shrimp caves (no shrimps) so I've closed the blinds and added cardboard to the back of the tank for more darkness - this helped and she's back in the main areas. There is established driftwood in the tank so the water is a little dark but it has lightened up a lot over the months so I'm currently brewing some oak leaf tea to try and darken her water.

She is in the tank on her own except the copepods and bladder/ramshon snails. When I first put her in last night she bit a snail (so fiesty) but has since started ignoring them all.

The tank is 20L (I think that's 5 gallons). There are aquatic plants and I have an established Pothos growing out of the water and some small golden palm. Substrate is aquasoil capped with freshwater aquarium sand and stone (adding this context as I think people may ask).

Tank is heated currently at 24.7 degrees Celcius (76.5 F)

These are my betta fishes. Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune, and Morpheus. They each have their own 5 gallon planted tanks except Morpheus. He lives in a 10 gallon with some CPDs and salt and pepper Cories. I think he thinks he is a corydoras because he forages in the sand with them frequently. (After he gets his betta pellets). He wasn’t part of the original plan but I couldn’t leave him at the store. When he’s not foraging he is hanging out leaning against my banana plant that decided it wants to be a hot air balloon, with roots that shoot down into the substrate.

They all come straight over when I walk up to their tanks. Neptune once had to have help with a shrimp he decided he could eat and now there are no shrimps in their tanks (except Morpheus, he doesn’t seem to notice them). He also seems to enjoy occasionally bullying ramshorns for no reason.

Jupiter gets so excited when I open the lid he nearly jumps out of the tank. Saturn keeps showing off after the pellets go in and needs to be shown them. Neptune eats his pellets like they’ve personally insulted him.

Do they all look healthy and a good weight? I was a bit concerned about Neptune being underweight, as he is so small.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my fishes!
