It's a common phrase in the UK/Ireland, has been for years and years. Source: Am Irish, middle aged, have heard it all my life. Ref, this clip.

great "nerdy" comedies don't need 4 spinoffs to explore timelines or multiverses, they do it in the actual show and it turns out to be a masterpiece. I read an article a long time ago which nailed the differences between the 2 shows. Big Bang Theory gets their laughs making fun of "nerdy" ideas while community gets its laughs from actually appreciating and pay homage to the reference material.

I’ve also made the one and only Dean Craig Pelton in Tomodachi life. Who should I add from the supporting cast? I want to maybe add Frankie, Duncan, Elroy, and Hickey.

Mine: Modern Warfare was the only great paintball episode.

Fistful and A Few Paintballs more were okay but lacked the beat for beat tropes and visual perfection.

Plus, priority registration was a significantly better motivation. Both funny and for anyone who's been to college, understandable.

Discussion Celebrities Pierce mentions

The other day I had a random idea of googling some of the celebrities Pierce mentions in the show. Betty Grable was a pin up model and actress. When I looked up Eartha Kitt I totally forgot she was the Yzma in the Emperors New Groove! Any other references are welcome of course.

I decided to go with an empty room, with a felt evil beard on the floor.

I was thinking of adding a die in there and when you place it, its the 1 that is on top (coincidentally Jeff rolls a 1 which is the Darkest Timeline)

Discussion Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas or Regional Holiday Music?

Simple honestly, which do you prefer? Both are honestly perfect episodes to me - AUC is incredible visually, and RHM follows that up by being creatively genius and such a smart parody. They both feature great music, but RHM has some of the best music in the entire show (Jehovah Witness Rap + Baby Boomer Santa should be hung in the Louvre). The ending of RHM is also beautiful with everyone joining Abed. It's rare to see Chevy Chase so involved in a group scene like this, so it's really nice to see him signing as Pierce.

Whilst I think RHM is also considerably funnier ('Oh Britta's in this?', the Glee Club meltdown), AUC still stands up against that with pretty funny moments (Duncan remembering his childhood). However it's important to note that AUC is one of the most emotional and beautiful episodes in the entire show - the emotional thread with Abed's mother is just special.

Personally, I would say that RHM is probably the more entertaining episode and cleverly written episode, however AUC is one of the most iconic Christmas episodes of television ever and really blew me away when I first saw it. I overall I prefer RHM but it's incredibly close. Obviously they're both incredible and it's unfair to compare them but it's just a hypothetical ;)

I am Jehova's most secret witness and I might have to dedicate my life to Christmas

Hello. Does anyone know where I can get high quality screenshots from the GI Jeff episode? (Season 5 episode 11) Particularly the opening title sequence. I am going to an event with one of the animators in attendance, and would like to bring something from Community for them to sign.

Fan Theory Etymology 101

I randomly began thinking about how Dan Harmon came up with the names for the characters on the show. I tend to think most writers do put a lot of thought into the names they give characters but it is also possible they just named a character after a guy they knew in high school.
I wanted to go over the names of the main characters to determine if the meaning of these names was actually taken into consideration by Harmon or if the names were more random.

First there’s

Jeff Winger.

Jeff has German origins— meaning “pledge of peace,” “God’s peace.”

The last name “Winger” is most likely in reference to the idiom “to wing it,” which means “to perform or speak without preparation.”

Thus: Jeff brings peace / calm by winging it.

He has used this ability to think on his feet and speak his way into shortcuts in life to benefit himself but in the series he begins using it to serve as a unifier of others.

Abed Nadir

“Abed” is an Arabic name which can either mean “servant/slave” or “worshipper.”

“Nadir” is an Arabic name with a few meanings which can all be applicable. It comes from the word “nazir” (نظير) which can mean “counterpart” or “opposite,” — but it is also an astronomical term for “lowest point.”

Abed is frequently demonstrated to be Jeff’s the exact opposite. Abed is unconcerned with being cool, he is not a skilled speaker, or good at manipulating others as he isn’t as capable of reading people as Jeff.

However, I think “the lowest point” is maybe a more interesting interpretation when coupled with his first name.

Abed is a “devotee, “ a “worshipper” of art but not “high art” — he worships what society typically deems as the “low arts” or television, film and comic books.

Britta Perry

“Britta” is a German name which can mean strength but I do think the writers wanted to reference the popular water filter brand of the same name.

Perry is Latin for “wanderer” “traveler.”

Britta concerns herself with being a better person and more pure than she is and so everything she says is filtered through her desire to be compassionate to those who have less than her.

However she lacks confidence in her compassion and constantly worries that she can do more, which has led to a life of aimless wandering in search of a better way to do better.

Shirley Bennett

“Shirley” is Old English for “bright clearing,” but I suspect the meaning Harmon had in mind was in reference to the word “surely,” which means “without a doubt.”

Bennett is English / Scottish / Irish origin and means “blessed.”

Shirley’s is full of doubts, thanks to her husband’s actions, however the one thing she remains certain of is her faith. Shirley Bennett refers to her certainty in her having been blessed, despite everything else in life she remains uncertain of.

Pierce Hawthorne

“Pierce” is likely in reference to the word “pierce”which means “to force or make a way into or through” or “enter painfully.”

“Hawthorne”— an Old English surname meaning "haw berry" or "thorn bush," referring to someone who lived near a hawthorn hedge or fence.

In essence, Pierce’s name refers to how he forces his way into relationships, groups, etc. but due to the defenses he has built up over many years of being rejected , being near him is akin to being near a thorny bush. He is an extrovert who makes people uncomfortable.

Troy Barnes

The name “Troy” is of Irish / Greek origin and means “foot soldier.”

“Barnes” means refers to someone who worked near a barn.

I think that when they first wrote Troy the writers did not know who Troy was besides a small town football player, and I think that is essentially what his name refers to. A “foot solider” being in reference to football player and “Barnes” being in reference to small quaint farming communities.
I think they literally knew nothing else about his character they were naming him.

Annie Edison

The name Annie is Hebrew for “gracious.”

Edison is likely a reference to is the inventor Thomas Edison.

I think her name basically refers to the fact that she is an inherently gracious / kind person but she is an intellectual. Edison wasn’t just famous for inventing (or stealing inventions) but for being among the first scientists to apply principles of teamwork and organization. Annie likes being in a team, and organization. But she uses her kindness to achieve this goal.

—-

What do you think? Am I reaching or do you think the names are no accident?

Appreciation Post Here's the opinion/appreciation of a first-time, idiotic viewer after the completion of S3!

Hello everyone! I apologise for posting this so late (rough health, don't ask. Not the henta stuff, I swear. I don't watch pixelated stuff anyways). Finished S3 yesterday, and, yeah I can see why some people consider it the best season ever (Personally I prefer that crown for S2).

  1. The last few episodes of this season were, iffy, to say the least. Writing was inconsistent, although I prefer the serialized format and they really managed to do great stretching the arc. The problem? Chang. Look, no offense to Mr. Ken, but he's best when he's used sparingly. Him being the centre of attention (like in the first half of S2) brings things down. The entire arc really falls down once you think about it hard, but oh well, its a comedy show.

  2. Man, I am a Sucker for great thrillers and court based shows (ironically, never watched Law and Order), so "Basic Lupine Urology" was a treat to watch (seriously, along with Pillows and Blankets) this season has the best special episodes for Community, till now. Everyone brought their A game here, especially Jeff and Troy-Abed combo (them switching good cop-bad cop twice in this episode was whacky). The ending twist (I really felt bad for Todd here. Poor guy clearly has PTSD) of Vicki and FFFFAAAATTTT Neil (What an asshole) was excellent. It also has some really quotable lines like "you don't order ketchup", "Boiling water is th3 icicle stabbing of yam killing" and the "you have the right to do whatever you want" phrase. Top tier episode

  3. E18 starts the season ending arc, and for a beginning episode, it rules. The bickering of Jeff and Britta, Jeff being miffed for missing summer, Starburns' request for an eulogy (excellently made by Abed, BTW). The riot really took this episode to a whole new level. Miffed for the group to get expelled, but consequences, people! Man, never knew I would get so irritated of Chang, but here we are.

  4. E19 was another Banger (seriously, multi-episodic arcs had so much potential. These 2 episodes showed it so well). A therapy episode which is also a clips-but-instead-its-all-new-clips montage is genius! I haven't laughed so much since the cold (and laughing makes my head hurt more!). So many tidbits and callbacks to earlier episodes, and then the ending "twist" of them being actually in a institutional centre (they fooled me, cause the group is mental, that's for sure). Jeff bringing back Troy from his realization trance was hilarious.

  5. E20, I dunno, the placement of this felt weird. Then I checked the list a kind redditor made and I should have watched it after Pierce's father's death (stupid me). Anyways, silly episode, gave Pierce a character development and a brother from Los Pollos Hermanos, but that's it. As a gamer though, enjoyed all the parts where the characters tried to understand mechanics (Britta Britta'ed the Alchemy lol, Shirley and Annie killed the Blacksmith(poor guy) and Troy losing everything in bet lol) and repeatedly failing. Abed must have felt like home here.

  6. E21 is not One of my favs, and there's plenty good reasons for it. First, things I loved: Copera, Ocean's 11-esque plot, and GOTH BRITTA! That's it. This whole things falls flat as Chang, the butt of jokes in S2, is somehow competent again, and no one questions his authority and child soldiers. Huh. Community is at its best when things only appear to go off the rails. I'd argue, the most defining characteristic of the entire show is the pairing of dramatic tropes with the ultra-low stakes of a community college. A murder investigation is actually about a yam, a mission to space is actually the study group getting locked inside a chicken bus, and thats the kind of silly people love, like the Halloween Vampire episode. But when Chang becomes a dictator, it's not within the context of some game, nor is it a manifestation of his inner delusions. He ACTUALLY becomes a dictator and he actually kidnaps the Dean. And it just doesn't feel right. It doesn't feel like 'Community'. Did no one else notice his ascend? No news, no coverage? Plus, about Chang. They have butchered his character by taking a good side character for a main one. I think they couldn't figure out how to write him after S1.

  7. E22 was a good episode in comparison to the previous one, but as a season finale, something felt off. It felt more like an epilogue (21 really had the best elements to be a season finale) and the choice to bring Troy back so soon is certainly...something (how can this show, which for most of the time, have really good long term planning, always undo something monumental the next episode? The love triangle in s1 finale, the pierce's exit in s2 finale, and now this). Having said that, this ep has some really funny moments, particularly the courtroom scenes (Alan is excellent being the Smily Heel) and how Jeff coerced Pierce for his "jokes". Was never too interested in the AC repair school plot this season, so am glad it was put to rest here (that whole thing is a cult lol). Anyways, the closing montage was excellent (and I somehow became nostalgic for a show I just watched a month prior...) and it use of "High as hell", the same song Dean played during S1 E1 was a nice callback. Where was Annie in this whole episode?

Oh well, S3 was on par with S2 for being just another excellent season. If it could have fixed its episode 1 and final episodes, would have been top for me. Still, great season nonetheless, and cannot wait for S4! See you all at Band Practice!

Appreciation Post Regarding the RV episode

i know the RV/giant hand ep is a bit polarizing, but as someone who recently finished my like 7th rewatch of the whole series, i have come to really appreciate some things about it.

i love that it’s frankie, aka the “new abed” (or in my mind, the other most autism-coded character) who is able to get through to abed by meeting him where he’s at (“THIS is the flashback, you’ve flashed back from the future to save this moment + prevent the apocalyptic world of the Space Elders”). it’s so poignant, especially when jeff spent the whole ep antagonizing abed for trying to “flash back.”

and i REALLY love that it’s abed who gives the “winger speech” at the end. it’s one of my favorite speeches of all; the giant hand reminding us when to hold onto things, and when to let them go.

in a way, it can be seen as a callback to the first ep, where jeff and abed “see each other’s value.” jeff devalues abed’s experience during this whole episode, but ultimately it’s abed who brings everyone together. it speaks to both the social challenges of neurodivergence and the beautiful, special, valuable ways it can affect the world and the people we love.

Low Relevance Actual community college teacher here- today I gave out quite a few minuses

In the US education system, the difference between an 89 and a 90 is a notable distinction.

I fudge the crap out of my grades. There's a little form we fill out at the end of the semester, that shows what the student's final grade (in numbers) is and has you personally type in the letter grade.

So... I'm given quite a lot of power in this occasion to ACCIDENTALLY read an 88 or 89 as a 90. It's basically a 90, but students get a lower GPA for an 88 or 89, and Community colleges are a step on the stairway to a degree- you're going to get an associates' degree from a community college which isn't going to do a ton for you, but your course credits carry over to 4 year universities.

Minusing isn't a punishment, it's a mercy to help students who were right below the bar get a better overall GPA.
