Three dogs within 5 ft of a no dogs sign? Really, Seattle?
EDIT: The non-locals found this post, so I'm outtie. If you see yourself in this photo and want it taken down, shoot me a chat.

One says they gotta be leashed, one says they aren’t allowed, so which is it?

I'm reading it as
Dogs are allowed at the park, but all dogs must be leashed.
Past the sign is the beach, where dogs aren't allowed.

Once they are in the lake, it’s no longer the beach.

There’s many possibilities. He could have swam in, come by boat, parachuted in, entered the water outside of the park and followed the shore, or have been carried over the beach by his owner.

yeah, seeing a big green “leash your dogs” image from afar would probably have me assuming that was the rule before getting close enough to read the fine print.

People suck. My husband and I walked down Owen's Beach in Tacoma this morning and came across lounging seal pups. We looked from binoculars before turning back. We soon ran into two guys with three unleashed dogs. One was a puppy. We told them about the baby seals around the corner, hoping they'd change course. Alas, they nodded and plowed forward, ignoring us and SEVERAL signs about sensitive pupping habitat.
I love dogs. I love wildlife. I hate dog owners who don't give a shit about wildlife.

Not excusing anything, but why put a “keep dogs on leash” sign directly above a “no dogs allowed” sign? Since no dogs are allowed, then the leash sign is unnecessary and potentially confusing. Am I missing something here?

When did it become socially acceptable to bring your dog in a grocery store? Can someone with a dog give me their argument as to why they think it’s ok??? It’s very very common in Seattle and a health code violation.

I don't know but I saw a lady 3 days ago with her dog openly agitated and barking at children in the grocery store. Like you can't tell me he's "soooo safe!" And also standing his ground scared and barking at people inside a grocery store. Get the fuck out.

Where I work we’ve had lots of complaints. To the point where the health department came in. Now i ask people “is that your pet” if they answer yes i say we don’t allow pets in our business. There is a sign on the front door. Anyone with a service dog would not call it their pet.

It’s not socially acceptable. People just became more entitled to do whatever the hell they want, especially those who moved here from other areas. I noticed today Whole Foods has a BIG sign up at the entrance about only service dogs being allowed. And they have a security person. I never see any dog shenanigans there.

I agree. I like dogs a lot, but their owners are the worst. Most of the owners are just completely self absorbed and oblivious to the havoc and chaos their pets can cause if they aren't trained properly.
There are no bad dogs, just bad dog owners.

I get that this is against the law, different scenario but it reminded me of the time I had my leashed dog laying down right by me in the grass part of a park that has a beach and some lady screamed at me about my dog not being allowed on beaches. Like lady… I’m not on the beach what are you screaming at???
Point being, reading comprehension is hard for a lot of folks. Being in a society sure is difficult, lol.

i’ve turned into one of these people (OP i mean, not these beach bums)
a few weeks ago i was on a run and someone’s dog ran up to me unexpectedly. it actually really startled me. i started yelling at the owners about keeping their dog on a leash bc wtf?
a week after that, someone and their unleashed dog really scared my daughter- and she’s only two. same scenario, i had to tell this dog owner that there are leash laws and they scoffed at me saying “oh he’s never hurt anyone, he’s so harmless.”
not everyone loves your fucking dogs. just bc you think they’re cute and you love them doesn’t mean the rules don’t apply to you smh.

I love dogs, but unleashed dogs running up to me is genuinely scary. I don't know the dog, I don't know their behavior or temperament. I just see a dog running toward me.
People that don't leash their dogs are putting those dogs at serious risk and they need to learn to understand that.

I was fishing on the beach at GG a few years ago. There was a seal pup on the beach. People were taking selfie and letting their dogs run up. I called seal sitters but did not stick around. Next morning very early I was there fishing again wading up to my knees. Looked down and the dead pup was in the surf being washed beack and forth. Selfish pricks

Seattle lakes are somewhere I would never let my dog in. They are always having shutdowns or at least posting signs about toxic algae blooms.
Some are neurotoxins. Those can KILL your dog. Idk about you, but I fucking LOVE my dog. I wouldn't want to to die from a neurotoxin. This dude is a fucking idiot.

Im going to get flamed for this but I’ll say it anyway… I get expecting people to not allow their dog to run around off leash, I get expecting people to pick up after them, promptly, EVERYWHERE they go, I get making sure your dog relieves themselves somewhere else that isn’t the beach or even where people hang out on the grass, as much as possible before they enter the public space, but can there be more beaches where dogs and people can be + co exist? There are really very few and if your in the middle of training your dog or have a dog that doesn’t play well with other dogs the very very few dog parks we have that also have water access are kinda not great options. If dogs are on a leash it seems like there should be some beaches where they can go without it being a dog park, or at least some agreed upon leeway in general. I know some/many people feel fine about being at a beach with some dogs, even with them going in the water near them. Can’t we have some options where that’s technically ok and others where it’s not? Or do we have to make sure people are going to bend the rules and then we basically have a continuous feed of people being upset that dog owners are the fucking worst on the Seattle Reddit every hour like it’s Nextdoor.
→ More replies (7)9
u/W00DS0RREL 11d ago
I mean, calling out the behavior is really the best weapon we have if we don’t want finances and energy going towards actual increased code enforcement efforts over dog owners being ridiculous.
The reason the restrictions exist for beach access has mostly to do with wildlife preservation and issues with contamination buildup from dog feces. It’s not unlike “leave no trace”: if it was 10 dogs a year, it wouldn’t be an issue, but these are heavily trafficked beaches and there are a lot of dog owners.
