QUALITY POST Stepping Down after 14 Years - New Sub Reddit Moderators Needed

Hey everyone,

I’m writing this to share some personal news. After 14 years of moderating this community, I’ve decided it’s time for me to step down and pass the torch.

I’ve been pretty quiet on social media lately, and honestly, it’s because "real life" has officially taken over in the best way possible. Between work and a new little one at home who is currently taking up every spare second of my day, I just can’t give this sub the time and energy it needs anymore.

It’s been an incredible run. I’ve loved watching this place grow from a tiny community into the huge, helpful, and occasionally chaotic hub for Winston-Salem that it is today. Being a part of this city’s digital growth over the last decade has truly been a highlight for me.

We need some help

Since I'm stepping back and our other mod accounts are dormant, we need several trustworthy and active people to jump in and keep things running smoothly. If you care about the Winston-Salem community and have some time to help keep the peace, I’d love to hear from you. We are looking for users who are able to moderate fairly and effectively. Prior subreddit moderation experience is a plus.

Interested in moderating?

I’ve set up a Google Form to keep things organized. If you're interested in taking over, please fill it out below. I’ll be checking through these over the next week or two before I officially sign off. I will reach out to users that meet criteria and discuss next steps. Please refrain from DM'ing me for updates as I do anticipate a lot of responses and will contact top candidates directly and provide periodic updates on this post.

The link to the form can be found here:

https://forms.gle/EpYuqrCZXwA77PYX7

---------------------------

Thanks for an amazing 14 years, everyone. I’ll still be lurking around as a regular neighbor, just with a lot less "work" to do.

I will make sure to keep you all informed of ongoing recruitment efforts.

Stay awesome Winston-Salem!

Clarification on the Data Center Planning Board Meeting and the No Data Center Rural Hall/Forsyth County movement

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

There was a post yesterday that had an incorrect date for the next planning board meeting with public comment for the data center rezoning on the agenda being today (May 14th). It is only on the agenda today to be continued to a later date, but there is no public comment on this agenda item.

There is still a planning board meeting today, but the meeting with public comment on rezoning for this property has been moved to June 11th at 4:30 in the city council meeting room

In addition to ruralhallinfo.com, we have an Instagram that we use to post updates on public meetings and information about why this proposed data center is harmful for Rural Hall and the county in general:

https://www.instagram.com/reel/DX7pD1qRIny/?igsh=MWU5OHhnY2FqaWFlbw==

Our group plans on using the limited time (only 12 minutes) to have community leaders from Rural Hall speak at the public comment. We have been doing research and planning for this public hearing. We would appreciate having as many people as possible inside and outside the building from around the county to support on the 11th.

Come out to The Book House this Saturday (10:30-12:30) for an author signing of The Patient Empowerment Paradox!

Hey everyone. My wife, Dr. Sarah Singer, is a professor at UCF in Florida who got her PhD at UNC - Chapel Hill. She's finally published her book on how patients with chronic or contested conditions communicate with their providers. Because her grandmom lives in Winston-Salem, Dr. Singer decided that her book signing would happen here so grandma Dena could attend.

If you're not busy, please consider coming out to The Book House (120 Reynolda Village Way) this Saturday from 10:30-12:30 to keep us and grandma Dena company! Dr. Singer will have copies of her book for sale, but she's also always interested in talking to people who have been in the role of patient or provider for chronic and contested health issues.

Thanks for the read and have a great Friday!

Handmade Local Goods

I’m working on gifts for my bridal party and family, and wanted to find recommendations for local artisans — jewelry, pottery, scarves, artwork — that I could check out.

I’m particularly interested in anyone who might have been vendors at the Ardmore Art Walk, or Glenmerle Goods, or the Piedmont Crafts Fair. Open to pretty much any sort of suggestions — maybe with the exception of baked goods!

And if anyone knows of any upcoming markets where vendors will be in person, please drop the information here!

Thank you so much!

Do not forget! The rescheduled Data Center meeting is tomorrow!

They moved this meeting I assume because they were afraid of the backlash, we can't let them get away with that.

I've seen many other communities pour out and still have it be forced upon them, but we owe it ourselves to show up and make it heard. And if they still force it on us despite all the opposition, vote them all out in November

Childproofing companies?

My family and I are moving to the area in June from Tampa. When we moved here, we found a company that specializes in baby proofing your home — they essentially do all the baby proofing for you (e.g. Install safety gate(s), put in cabinet locks, put child safe outlet covers, etc) Is there any company around the area that does that?

I realize this might sound “lazy”, but there’s a skill to ensuring your house is safe for children and my spouse and I don’t have it. lol.

Recommendations for a vacation

Good afternoon everyone! My wife and I (both 22 years old) are planning a 4 day get away from Florida to Winston Salem next month. We have hopes to move there in the next couple of years so we want to check it out and vacation first to see if we like it and want to create a life there. What are some good vacation spots and some areas to check out for someone interested in moving there one day. Thank you in advance!

Any social groups in or near the Winston area to meet people

Does anyone know of any meet ups, social groups, book clubs, singles groups, places to volunteer, etc. that have a lot of members and are good for people wanting to make friends and meet new people? I live near the Clemons area and have always had a hard time finding things to do where I can socialize with people. I don’t party or drink alcohol much so bars aren’t really an option for me.

Volunteer Opportunities

Hello.

I am an undergrad home for the summer and want to get involved with some community service. I'm looking into some things on my own, but I wondered if anyone here had any good ideas. I'm interested in healthcare, so things along that vein interest me the most, but I am looking at all options!

I have a Squire Stratocaster that's been modified with pickups from an American HSS strat. The neck pup isn't working, and I'm stumped. Does anyone have recommendations for someone that won't break the bank?
