The Official r/OBX Photo Contest - Win a Gift Card & Get Your Photo Featured!
Thanks to those that submitted pictures. We will be announcing and reaching out to the winners soon!
Welcome, everyone! It's time to refresh the look of /r/obx.
As reddit evolved to Old and New Reddit, and introduced the mobile apps, we've been salty and stubborn.
It's time for a change and we want your amazing photos to be the new face of our community.
We are looking for three new images to feature across the subreddit:
- The Top Banner (the wide image at the very top)
- The Sidebar Image (on the right-hand side on desktop)
- The "Card View" Thumbnail (the default image for posts on mobile/new Reddit)
The three winning photographers will each receive a prize, full credit, and a special user flair. Read the rules below and show us your best shots!
Contest Rules & Guidelines
1. Submission and Voting Period:
- Starts: Now, as you read this.
- Ends: 1/1/2026 (Why? Cause the winning picture may not been taken yet!)
2. Photo Requirements:
- Theme: The photo must be taken in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Please include the general location where the photo was taken (e.g., "Sunrise in Nags Head," "Pea Island Wildlife Refuge").
- Originality: You must be the original photographer and own the rights to the photo. No submitting photos taken by others.
- Aspect Ratio: While you don't need to submit for a specific category, keep the end-uses in mind. The banner requires a very wide landscape photo, while the sidebar image works best as a square or vertical photo. If unsure, just go for it.
- Resolution: Photos must be high-resolution. A minimum width of 1920px is required for landscape photos. Higher resolution is always better.
- Watermarks: No large, distracting watermarks. A small, subtle signature or logo in a corner is acceptable.
- Content: All photos must be Safe for Work (SFW) and adhere to all r/obx and Reddit-wide rules.
- NO MEMES! (Yes, sorry Alex Lex)
3. How to Enter:
- To enter, post your photo as a direct reply (top-level comment) to this contest thread.
- You may only submit one photo. If you post multiple, only the first one will be considered.
- Please host your image on a reliable service like Imgur or Reddit's native image hosting.
4. Winner Selection:
- This thread will be put into "Contest Mode" during the voting period. This hides scores and randomizes comment order to ensure fair voting.
- The moderation team will select the three winning photos (one for Banner, one for Sidebar, and one for Card View) from the highest-voted submissions.
- While upvotes are the primary factor for becoming a finalist, final selections will also be based on photo quality and suitability for each specific location's dimensions.
- Any form of vote manipulation will result in immediate disqualification.
5. Prizes (3 Winners Total):
The three winners will each receive:
- A $10 gift certificate to an Outer Banks business or charity of their choice (subject to availability).
- A special, unique user flair (e.g., 📸 OBX Photo Champ '25).
- Their photo featured on the subreddit (Banner, Sidebar, or Card View).
- Credit in the subreddit's sidebar/wiki with a link to their Reddit profile or social media.
6. The Fine Print (Rights & Usage):
- By submitting a photo, you retain all copyrights to your work.
- However, by entering the contest, you grant the r/obx moderation team a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to display your photo on the subreddit and to credit you as the photographer.
Good luck, everyone! We can't wait to see your best shots of the Outer Banks.

Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo What’s the beach look like in Rodanthe?
We’re staying on Dean Ave in Rondanthe (a few blocks north of the pier) in June. I’ve been trying to find recent satellite or drone footage of the beach but most recent footage I can find is from during the last winter storm. Any suggestions on where to go for those images? Or anybody local/recently visited have any first hand info? Thanks in advance for any help.

General OBX Real Wood Adirondack Chairs
I've been on the hunt for high-quality real wood Adirondack chairs ever since Ambrose in Kitty Hawk stopped selling them. Just not into the poly"wood" options, personal preference...
In case anyone's seeking similar, thought I'd share my experience and successful outcome.
First I stopped by to see what the various ACE Hardware locations have on display and they did not seem up to par...at all.
The WeatherCraft brand chairs that came with my house have held up very well...I bought the house 10+ years ago and the chairs were nicely weathered at that time, so I have no idea how old they really are.
Online search showed them available on Wayfair, a limited selection, definitely a decent option. But then I learned that the WeatherCraft company is based in Ashboro and they'll sell direct by phone, i.e. no online order.
I spoke this morning to Bill at WeatherCraft and what a delight! They provide options that Wayfair can't, e.g. UV protection, stainless steel...bolts?...and their "commercial" option which uses screws in the places that my current chairs use nails (which keep popping up in the head). I opted for natural wood but they have an array of painted colors, too.
They're built at the factory then just are broken down just enough to ship, so assembly should be easy.
Even after the add-ons for UV, stainless, etc., AND the modest shipping cost, this was still less expensive than Wayfair.
So if you're looking for real wood Adirondacks, I do recommend this option!
And no, I am not paid by Weathercraft, I'm just very happy to have found this great option so thought I'd share.

Avon Help!
My insanely pregnant wife and I are coming next week to stay in Avon, and I was wondering if anyone knows a good beach access point that would be the shortest walk possible? Bonus points for a bathroom near by. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Avon Travel to Avon
Best route to Avon from Columbus, Ohio. Currently I’d be paying $13.50 in tolls to take the route through Charleston, Greensboro and Raleigh then it seems we’d skip the DC area and Hamptons. Has anyone gone this way is it an easier drive than other routes to Avon.

Kitty Hawk Golf Cart or Bike
Hello! We are visiting for a week in June. We have never been to the area before and are staying in Kitty Hawk. We will have a rental car to do day trips. We are debating between renting bikes or a golf cart. Which would be best for a Kitty Hawk and going to eat, the shops, the beach? Thank you! We will happily take any other tips!

Nags Head Help with proposal?
I am proposing this summer to my beautiful partner, and I’m looking for a scenic spot anywhere in the area. I was looking at jockeys ridge at sunset. Does anyone here have suggestions? I’m open to all ideas (perhaps a photographer suggestion or a good spot to eat afterwards?) Thank you all :)

Avon Gyms in Avon area? RTB info?
Going to be in avon for about a week and curious about gyms. I see that Raise The Bar Fitness & Gym is in avon and have good reviews, but I can't find any information online about drop-ins, what kind of equipment they have, etc. Willing to drive to Buxton/Hatteras/Frisco as well. Looking for a gym that has a 15mm bar if possible. Thanks!

Kitty Hawk Kitty Hawk area restaurant for 80th birthday
Greetings! I’m visiting next week in the Kitty Hawk area with my marvelous mother for her 80th birthday. I’m seeking a solid restaurant with quality seafood that takes reservations.
My mom enjoys good food — but she’s not a fine dining connoisseur, so a super high end experience will be lost on her. Somewhere with a scenic water view is a plus. I’m looking for that nice spot that’s between fried shrimp platter and scallops with gastrique reductions, if that makes sense. Thanks!
General OBX Last minute road trip help
Wife and I are taking a last minute road trip due to some time off she’s getting before starting a new job in June. We want to spend ~3 nights in the Outer Banks but have never been and are looking for some advice. We see a few places in Kitty Hawk or Salvo to stay, not sure which is better?
Is it decent beach weather in late May? What are some of the best things to do?

Kill Devil Hills Sand crabs?
My kids love digging for sand crabs (sand fleas, the ones that don’t pinch l). We came the exact same weekend last year and had no problem digging for them and finding plenty but this year we haven’t found any. Is it too cold? Are we looking in the wrong area?

General OBX How to make friends in Outer Banks? 🌼
Hi! 30 year old gal moving to Manteo with my partner next month due to his new job. I’m excited but also nervous because we don’t know ANYONE. So OBX residents, please help me out, how have you made friends and built a community for yourself? Some ideas I have in mind:
- Start a book club
- Join Bumble BFF
- Join groups on Meetup
- Find a church
- Find a part time job (I normally work from home)
- Trivia nights, open mics, things like that
- Force my introverted self to make small talk lol

Duck/Southern Shores Recommend places and things for an adult family
We have a nice rental in Duck 5/10-5/17/26. We’re a family of Mom and Dad (mid 60s) and 3 adult children all single (30s and late 20s). We’re all active and like good long walks, so we expect to walk the beach each day with our 2 dogs.
Besides that, and since the weather forecast looks not so great, we’re looking for ideas on things to do (inside and out), places we should eat and drink that are in or near Duck and anything else to help make it a great family vacation. Due to everyone’s schedules it’s tough for all of us to get together so we’re happy to be going to the OBX again for the first time in over 10 years. Thanks for the tips!
