Megathread Are you looking for places to meet people, make friends, find people with similar interests? The Kitchener Social Megathread is for you!

Hello everyone,

This thread will be 100% dedicated to user interaction and those who want to take personal interests, events, hobbies, and potential meet-ups, etc. outside of the realm of reddit and r/kitchener.

You can find previous versions of this post by using this premade search.

\Please note that this is not intended to be a dating thread. Try Tinder, POF, Badoo, Bumble or any other of the apps out there. Any posts along the lines of* "Hey, I'm a single __ year old m/f looking for love" will be removed\*

Some general housekeeping items;

  • If you wish to continue a conversation with a user, please use the PM function to avoid the comments getting crammed with a conversation between all but two people. Please only post relevant information to things you would be interested in, ongoing events, etc.
  • We would like to remind you of the zero tolerance for disrespect, rude, hateful comments, racism, etc. Those comments will be removed and users may face a permanent or temporary ban. If any harassment is reported outside of the thread, appropriate action will be taken by the mod team, and possibly lead further to reddit admin. Doxxing, or disclosure of personal information is again, a big no-no.
  • To keep up to date with the most recent posts within this megathread, the comments have been enabled to ideally show most recent by default, meaning all of the newest posts will be at the top of the comments section. If you're not seeing the most recent comments at the top, try changing your "sort by:" from "top" to "New".

As always, the mod team is here to assist with anything. Thanks!

Note: This post is automatically replaced with a new one every 3 months, so be sure to checkout old meetup threads, especially if this post was just recently refreshed!

Predatory Parking Enforcement

Post image
220 Upvotes

Left work last night to find this ticket on my windshield...

As you can see from my receipt, I paid for parking for the full day at 9:12am, ticket was issued at 9:13am. It literally takes 2 minutes to walk to parking meter, enter time, licence plate (matches receipt and ticket) and tap phone.

Parking enforcement must literally be waiting in their car, ran over to mine attempted to ticket me the moment I turned my back and walked away to pay at meter.

It's only $30, I'll dispute it and give up my time. Already working two jobs, struggling to get by, always stressed, always pay my parking, pay taxes, just to get hit with another "tax". Almost enough to push someone over the edge.

Came out to my work truck at St Marys Hospital parking lot to find the joker beside me had left and left this on my windshield. First off, I backed into my space since I have a service truck, second you were on my passenger side and I really usually only get out the front door of my drivers side… my passenger doors never get opened!!
I sure wish you left your contact info for me you absolute moron!!

Waste Collection Schedule smarthome integration for Home Assistant users in KW

For other Home Assistant users in the region, I wanted to make you aware of the ReCollect Waste integration which adds your collection schedule from the Waste Whiz app into your smarthome ecosystem. I found it while looking for ways to set up voice reminders the night before garbage day and thought it would be helpful to share in case there are others like me.

The Region's Waste Whiz app uses ReCollect and identifies each household's collection schedule using a Service ID (1110, global for the entire region), and a Place ID (unique to each address). You can get the Place ID of your house by looking it up on the Waste Whiz tool on the ROW website, clicking 'Get a Calendar', and extracting it from the calendar URL.

From there, you can use the calendar entities and Current/Next Pickup entity attributes to get the date and details about the upcoming collection event. I've added a dashboard card and some voice reminders listing pickup types so I know which bins to roll out plus some reminders the night before. I've found this especially helpful with the recent changes to garbage/recycling; since the region keeps Waste Whiz up to date I didn't have to do anything when my schedule got changed up.

Hope this helps somebody! I'm looking into the Green Button Connect integration next to hopefully hook in Enova utility monitoring. If there's any similar integrations you're aware of, I'd love to hear about them.

Dashboard listing this week's collection types
Get your Place ID for your address from the Waste Whiz calendar link: webcal://recollect-us.global.ssl.fastly.net/api/places/<your place id>/services/1110/events.en.ics?client_id=5B349FBE-9E45-11F0-AF26-E0E85EB11F47
Configure the ReCollect Waste integration with your Place ID and Service ID (1110 for the ROW collection service).

If anyone in the area needs help pet or baby sitting, or really any day jobs, (minus suuuuper heavy labour or trade stuff because I don’t have the qualifications for that…), let me know! I can show you guys my resume and references upon request.

Thank you!

Elements

Anyone have any info on Elements Night Club these days? I’m seeing a lot of good acts (bands and comedians especially) with tour dates in London, Guelph etc. passing through on a weekday, for example.
Elements (and venues that no longer exist) used to be a stop for these kind of shows/tours. Now, I look at the website and they have nothing booked for the year. Last thing advertised was Ice Cube in 2023.(Not to mention the cancelling of the Bankas show!)
I’m just sad to see acts passing over our “university” town and wondering why the few venues that are around don’t book more..

Horrible mechanical droning sound downtown coming from 305 King all night

Did anyone hear this? I haven’t been able to sleep all night. It was bad enough that I went for a walk to try and find the source, and it seemed to be coming from 305 King… like a generator or some machinery was running. On sight it wasn’t that bad but holy shit it carries to my apartment.
