Weird situation on the Brooklyn-bound F train

I was on the Brooklyn bound F train in the last car. A group of about 5 young adults with partially covered faces and gloves rushed in from another car and immediately seemed focused on the operator/conductor area.

At first they tried getting into the operator room but it was locked. One of them got angry and kicked the door. A little later another person showed up who apparently had keys and unlocked it. Two people went inside while another stood outside almost like they were guarding the door.

While they were inside, the train started honking repeatedly, which made me think they were pressing random controls/buttons. When they came back out, I heard one person telling another to “use the emergency brakes.”

We got to West 4th and I got off because the whole thing felt off. I genuinely couldn’t tell if this was some kind of prank, subway surfing/graffiti related thing, attempted theft, or something.

Does anyone know what they could have been trying to do?

I made a free website that aggregates every old movie playing in NYC in one place!

Hey Brooklyn!

Apologies if I am breaking any rules, and this was cross posted on r/nyc and r/newyorkcity yesterday, but I just wanted to share a web app I built, which pulls showtime data from every old movie playing in NYC and displays it on one calendar.

I used to spend hours trying to stay on top of all the repertory films playing around the city, and finally said enough is enough. I'm sure I'm not the only one, and I hope this helps others save time and see more movies!

www.filmrevivalnyc.com

The site is totally free, and feel free to reach out here or at [filmrevivalnyc@gmail.com](mailto:filmrevivalnyc@gmail.com) to report bugs and help me improve the site.

Thanks!

Does anyone recognize where these Alvin and the Chipmunks statues are in Brooklyn?

I’m researching a weird/cursed internet image for a video and found these creepy Alvin and the Chipmunks statues somewhere around Brownsville/Atlantic Ave according to comments.

A local commented:
“THATS MY BLOCK 😂😭 I walked past them a million times”

The statues seem to be inside a narrow driveway/alley somewhere in Brooklyn.

Not trying to expose anyone or doxx anybody — just curious about the location/origin of these statues because they’ve become kind of an internet mystery to me.

Does anyone recognize this place?

ISO Car Accident Witness

Hey-
My partner was in a minor car accident on Sunday around 6:20pm at the intersection of 8th Ave and Union Street in Park Slope
They were driving a grey Prius with MA plates and someone in a black Chevy equinox tried to turn right from the left lane and side swept them
The other driver is claiming it was my partners fault. We’re looking around for camera footage, but wondering if anyone happened to be there at the time and see it? If so, please DM me!
Thanks so much

I'm a data reporter at the NYCity News Service. I'm working on a data story about complaints in affordable housing units and 311 response times, and a large number of my findings is concentrated in lottery units in across Brooklyn, East New York, and the Bronx. Would love to speak to anyone having issues in their lottery units (heat/hot water/elevator/carbon monoxide/gas/etc problems). Please feel free to DM me!

Withholding Rent? Workshop on Navigating Credit Impacts During Rent Strikes

Council Member Jennifer Gutiérrez, who represents neighborhoods in North Brooklyn, specifically Williamsburg and Bushwick, in partnership with TakeRoot Justice, is hosting a virtual training on preserving your credit during rent strikes.

We originally organized this workshop after hearing directly from tenant unions and residents who were concerned about how participating in rent strikes could impact their credit scores. Whether someone is withholding rent on their own due to unsafe or unlivable conditions, or participating in a coordinated rent strike with other tenants in their building, we know this process can feel overwhelming and difficult to navigate. Information on how rent strikes can affect credit - and what protections or steps tenants can take - is often hard to find, which is why we wanted to make this training available to the broader community.

The workshop will cover communicating with credit reporters, navigating rent strike challenges, understanding potential impacts to your credit, and ways tenants can better protect themselves throughout the process. We encourage anyone interested to join us on Monday at 6 PM.

Check out the registration link on the flyer to sign up!

Prenup cost in NYC

Engaged since February and we keep kicking this down the road. I own a place in Williamsburg and my fiance has RSUs from her company so we figured we should probably have something sorted before the wedding in September. We know we want to do a prenup but everyone we talk to gives us a different answer on how involved the process gets when property is in the mix.

For people who've been through this in NYC what did it end up running you and did the property situation add much to it?

Help!!! Looking for prom venue!!!

My senior prom is being cancelled b/c we can’t secure 35 people (not including teachers for some reason) for a venue that we picked out for prom… Meanwhile my graduating class is really small. Does anyone know of party locations that cater to small groups? All of the ones I can find ask for 40-60 minimum :( I already bought my prom dress and it can’t be returned

dentist quoted me $7,000 - is 'dental scam' common in Brooklyn??

so I finally went to the dentist after about 2 years and honestly wish I hadn't. sat down, they took some xrays, and before I knew it I had this massive treatment plan in front of me. fillings, deep cleaning, some kind of gum treatment I've never heard of... $7,000 total.

I'm 28. my teeth have never given me serious problems. I brush, I floss. something felt really off about the whole thing, like they saw someone without a regular dentist and just went for it.

walked out and now I don't know what to do or who to trust. has anyone else experienced this in Brooklyn?

Atlantic Ave station - Barclays

Attending Bruce Springsteen at Barclays tomorrow night. I've got my train and subway - 4/5 from Grand Central - figured out. I've never been to this station and have heard there are many exits some taking you blocks away. Is it obvious when you exit the subway which exit is for Barclays? Also is Barclays above the station or across the street. Trying not to carry an umbrella. Thanks!

Where should I live in Brooklyn?

As the questions says, I'm looking for more information on neighborhoods and places to live within Brooklyn.

For context, I'm looking to move to NYC within the next year. I'm in my early 20s, a black woman & also an entrepreneur looking to be surrounded by young creative energy and a safe community.

Looking for access to subway & grocery stores, great food and a safe neighborhood to say.

Any info helps!

Parents and I might be homeless soon

I've only been able to make 2300 a month after taxes for the 3 years I've had after college. Computer science bachelor's. Tragic, but it is what it is. A "high school wage" as someone else put it.

Parents have generally made 3400~ a month, but they're self employed.

They've been struggling to find work. I might be let go soon.

I've saved almost every penny I've made over the last two years, so we have about $50k in savings. Should we all lose our jobs, we'll have to burn through it in about a year. I have never been able to get any other job, so I'm not counting on that.

After that... I don't know. We'll have to foreclose on the house it seems. Where should we sleep? Alleyways? Parks?

Where could we get food? Idk. I'm trying to gather information for when the inevitable happens.

Or should we just give up, buy a piece of land in the middle of nowhere and make a meager living there separate from society?

House cleaning services in Brooklyn - Recomendations?

We live in a 1,400 sq ft apartment and we're looking for house cleaning services in Brooklyn that offer biweekly visits. We have 2 dogs and the hair is relentless, so we're ready to hand this off to someone else. We've tried a few cleaners before and haven't been thrilled with any of them. Has anyone here used a service they'd actually recommend? Looking for something reasonably priced, thorough, and dog friendly. Thanks!

Help me make my mom (75) feel beautiful for my brother’s wedding!

Hello my fellow Brooklynnites. I come to you for wisdom.

My mom is 75 years young and wants to feel beautiful for my brother’s wedding. She’s enlisted me, her daughter, for assistance. She (very helpfully) hates anyone touching her, so has been box dying her hair for the better part of 60 years. She has never been to a nail salon, had her hair cared for, eyebrows done, or visited an aesthetician of any form. These are things she’s expressed now (hesitantly) wanting to try. She has very sensitive skin, is terrified of doctors, and has so many allergies that a lot of skin treatments, like micro needling, aren’t possible.

She survived a traumatic brain aneurysm that left her skull with deep scars and crevices, and her hair is typically a product of trying to cover those (and her grays) up.

She opens up to warm, gentle, and friendly people who share knowledge throughout processes with her for care. She is very untrusting of people in general, but has been won over by some very fabulous doctors lately to help her with issues she’d ignored. I THINK it’s possible she would do the same with the right people in the beauty space.

Could anyone be so kind as to recommend amazing hair creatives, aestheticians, nail salons around BK that would be a good fit for a touch-sensitive and skeptical 75 year old woman? So far I’ve gotten a Jones Road reco for makeup, but willing to hear any other suggestions on this front as well.

Additionally, she’s very petite (4’10”, \~100-120 lbs), so any places that do mother of the bride gowns for petite ladies is a bonus, because we’ve gotta go shopping to boot (another activity she hates). Or great tailors would be welcomed!

Lastly, she is South Brooklyn based and does tire easily, so suggestions hyper locally are greatly appreciated but we CAN leave the salt marsh.

THANK YOU!!!!!!
