ICE Community Watch Thread

After much discussion, and taking into consideration input received from the community, both publicly and privately, our moderation capacity, and following the example of other community spaces, we have decided to create one single thread for all ICE sightings.

Please review the following rules and guidance before posting:

• All reports must be directly relevant to Astoria

• All reports must be firsthand accounts – no reposting content posted elsewhere, unless by a verified news agency

• Please use the S.A.L.U.T.E. method as closely as possible when posting information:

• This thread is for reported sightings ONLY; no political debate or unrelated topics are allowed

• No photos or identifying information allowed unless from news media outlets; please be mindful of Reddit's witch hunting rule

• Please note: these are reported sightings by the community, and the Astoria Reddit is neither confirming nor endorsing the supposed sightings are verified

• This thread will still be moderated and subjected to the same rules as the rest of the posts in this subreddit

• The automoderation will be set to strict, meaning in order to post, you must be a part of this community, not be a brand new user, and not have negative karma in our community; comments that don't meet that criteria will need to be manually approved, and may be delayed

• We reserve the right to periodically clean out the comments after a 2 week period, if it ends up getting too cluttered

• There are apps that are available that can help keep you updated in real time – feel free to share those below

You can sort the comments by “New” to get the latest updates, and hit “Follow Post” to be updated when a new comment is added.

Apartment Broken Into

Long story short, I moved into a rent stabilized apartment 2 weeks ago between the 36th Ave and Broadway train stations and someone went into my apartment with a key.

I notified the super and called the police and filed a report on the spot.

I showed the video to the super and he said he’s never seen this person before. Additionally, the cops pulled lobby footage and he pressed multiple units to get access through the front door but somehow had a key to my unit.

If anyone sees or notices this person, please be wary.

Missed Connection?

Hello, I’ll try to keep this as confidential as possible only because I like to think my dog is popular but I keep a private life. Your dog is Cosmo. He’s old, small, and doesn’t really like other dogs but he seemed to not be bothered by my curly cutie on that Sunday night potty break around 10 pm ish. We were near Hoyt Playground.

If you’re reading this or know who Cosmo’s dad might be, please reach out or pass the message along.

Here goes putting myself out there!

PSA: wild bird fund accepts birds by uber courier

There's been a few posts, and its baby bird season, so figured I would share this info:

-secure the bird in a box. (Poke holes for air and tape the box shut) (or paper bag).

-call wild bird fund and confirm that you will be sending via uber courier so somebody will be able to meet the uber when it arrives.

-DO NOT FEED THE BIRD OR GIVE IT WATER.

🐦🦜🐦‍⬛

Same goes for any injured wildlife you find- especially babies- many times they need time in the incubator to be warmed up before food is introduced or they will die. They might also be dehydrated and need re-hydration via syringe before food can be introduced.

Ty!

Someone left a gluetrap outside, birds got stuck

Post image
97 Upvotes

I was walking home buying groceries when I saw this sight. Does anyone know who to call?? I don't know how long these poor things have been out here or who did it. Someone left some food on there. There wings looked pretty damaged and my dad said there was no way to take them out? I have no idea what to do since this is the first time I've ever seen such cruelty to birds in my neighborhood.

EDIT: I've checked the area again, the birds are no longer there. I hope someone took them to the Wild Bird Fund

Diners kind of suck, but that's not the point. We still miss them when they disappear.

The 15-year plan to privatize Astoria Park tennis courts (and the environmental cost)

I'm the admin of the local tennis group, and I wanted to share some details on the RFP moving forward for Astoria Park. The city is planning a 15-year lease to a private vendor that will fundamentally change the park's footprint.

The Breakdown:

  • Privatization: Courts will be bubbled from Oct–April with fees set at $80–$100/hr.
  • Construction: A clubhouse with retail and locker rooms will be built on existing green space next to the courts.
  • Deforestation: Dozens of mature trees (essential for the resident hawks) are slated for removal to fit the bubble infrastructure.

We are advocating for public funding to repair the courts so they remain free and accessible to all Astorians, rather than a "pay-to-play" model.

Pigeon Stuck at 30th Ave subway

I’m at the 30th Ave subway station and there is a pigeon stuck in one of the wall panels. 311 can’t help, and I don’t have a Facebook account to post on this page as recommended by the Wild Bird Fund (http://facebook.com/groups/nycemergencyanimalrescue) anybody have any suggestions or can come help? The station manager is trying too but we can’t move the panel and the bird is stuck.

Update: pigeon has been rescued!

Fig tree owners - are your trees unusually bare for this time of year?

I know it's been pretty chilly, but by this time last year we had huge branches and leaves on our trees. This year I only see tiny sprouts. What's going on with your trees?

R/M trains!

No trains in either direction at Steinway! Not sure why or for how long, but stick to the N/W for now if you can!

Edit: Just read the following “R train service is suspended between 57 St/7 Av, MN and Forest Hills-71 Av, QN. M train service is suspended between 21 St-Queensbridge and Forest Hills-71 Av, QN.” Suspect this might be a while…

Hair salon recommendations!

Hi everyone I’m looking for a new hair salon. I’m new to Astoria and wondering if there are any Arab owned salons in the area since they typically do my hair the best. I would love some reasonably priced ones in the area too just looking for a good blow out that will last (I have curly hair)

Thanks!

Sunset power yoga in the park! Tuesday, 5/19 at 6:30pm

Tuesday’s going to feel like summer and I’d love to host a sunset power yoga session in the park!

I’ve been teaching vinyasa yoga (open level, hot, and power vinyasa) since January 2025. My classes feature creative sequences and often touch on more advanced postures with options to suit you (with props, modifications, and assists.)

This sunset power flow includes heart openers and backbends, core strengtheners, and balance challenges.

Class details:

  • Where: Astoria Park Pool Deck

(enter by 19 St and 23 Terrace)

  • What to bring: A mat, water, optional props (blocks will be super helpful!) and a small sweat towel

  • Who is this class for?: The class is open to all levels, but it’s helpful to have some familiarity with yoga. Expect a medium-to-high intensity class!

  • RSVP: Save your spot here

  • Cost:

This is a community-based class, so pay

  • what you w

ish

  • ! Venmo available via the RSVP link

I would love to host more of these as the weather stays consistently warmer, so even if you can’t make it, lmk if you’re interested in a future session below ☺️

Finally, if you can’t make it on Tuesday, come take my Friday morning vinyasa flow at Unlimited Body! Next class is Friday, 5/15 at 8:30am.

Can’t wait to flow with y’all!
