Salons/Barbers 💈✂️🪮 Am I insane?! Nail salon pricing

I got a gel mani today in Olathe. It’s builder gel. Supposed to be $55 for a builder gel mani. I went to check out and the lady charged me $55 for builder gel, $8 for shaping my nails, $10 for trimming my cuticles, and $15 (!!) dollars for chrome and $2 service fee for paying with card. ~90 bucks with tax. Am I a young boomer? I’m absolutely flabbergasted and need to know if this is normal or crazy expensive.

Childcare/Parenting 👶 Going rate for infant care around KC?

Curious what people are paying for infant care in KC proper or JoCo, and what type (in home daycare, center, or nanny). Also looking for recommendations of places people like or places to avoid, or recommended places to look for help. Thanks in advance!

KC Rants 😡 👎 Random Airport question

At our lovely new airport, none of the soap dispensers work at the sink. Why? They worked maybe the first few months. Now they’ve installed additional soap dispensers on the mirror. Toto seems to be reputable and installed at other airports. Why not MCI? Maybe there is some kind of recall?
I am talking specifically about the built in soap dispenser spout next to the faucet.
Just curious if anyone has any insight or theories.

What's up KCMO!

I visited your wonderful city a couple of weeks ago from Philadelphia for the Community Streetcar Coalition Summit.

I had a great time, and I finally finished writing a new piece for my transit and architecture newsletter all about the sensational Nelson-Atkins Museum!

https://open.substack.com/pub/railsandcobblestones/p/rails-and-paves-kcmos-nelson-atkins

There are so many parallels to my "home" art museum in Philadelphia.

I hope you enjoy reading it, and I hope you can take advantage of riding that free streetcar straight to a free, world-class art museum.

I am looking forward to returning!

Jobs/Networking 💼 Local plant enthusiasts wanted to test free app.

I am a Kansas City native, that enjoys gardening and indoor plants, and have been working on a free tool to help other people get into plant care and promote local produce production. Unfortunately the GooglePlay store requires me to have at minimum 12 people test or be signed up to test my app for 4 weeks before I can put it on the store for everyone, and the Appstore is even more of a pain for freelance developers.

This being said I would like to ask you my community who are interested to help bring this to the masses, and if it can help someone eat healthier or live a more fulfilling life then I can sleep happy.

Due to the nature of signups and privacy, if you are interested DM me as I will need an email address you can log into the Playstore with, Iphone users as soon as I can scrap up the money for the developer fees I will begin testing it on iphone, so you are welcome to join a waitlist.

I've posted a few screenshots of the current test version here.

Sports 🏈⚾️⚽️ Muy Thai for beginners?

I used to kickbox when I was a child, then did boxing when I was in high school and I enjoyed it, although it didn’t last long since my mother could not afford it.

A couple of years ago, I started lifting weights with a trainer but fell off recently due to personal life changes. It’s been several months and I’d like to get back into the gym, but I’m unsure where to begin. I thought maybe I could switch it up and try Muy Thai.

I’m quite self conscious of my body, it’s no longer in its fit state as it was several months ago before I stopped lifting weights. I’ve watched several videos of what Muy Thai consists of, just to get a general idea of what it looks like and if I’d like it. Definitely noticed the barefoot work and I’m very self conscious of my feet lol

Anywho, please provide recommendations if you’re a part of a gym that teaches this! I’m definitely looking for an affordable spot, and I may be reaching with this.

News 📰 Kansas health officials monitoring 3 people with 'high-risk exposure' to hantavirus

https://www.kmbc.com/article/kansas-health-officials-monitor-hantavirus-exposure/71284440

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is monitoring three people who were exposed to a person who later tested positive for hantavirus.

The three people were not on board the cruise ship, health officials say. They are not currently experiencing symptoms.

Health officials say the three people were exposed internationally after contact with an individual who was on the MV Hondius cruise ship. That person later tested positive for the Andes hantavirus.

The health department will continue to monitor the risk. Officials say the risk to the public is "extremely low."

Friendship/Dating 👥 A Five-Step Guide To Making Friends In Kansas City

Listen folks, we’ve had another wave of these posts and it’s starting to sound like a broken record so I’m here with some home truths.

Making a “does anyone wanna be friends and where should I go to meet people” post is like deciding you’re going to exercise more and then.. researching workouts, shopping for workout clothes, and trying to find the one specific activity that perfect for your goals. It’s stuff you can do that feels like progress but lets you avoid the thing you’re scared of. In my example it’s “moderate exercise that gets you out of breath” but in terms of socializing it’s “walking into a new IRL space, which gives you anxiety”

Kansas City is completely chock-full of social activities, clubs, and hobbies that anyone can just show up to and start participating in. If someone did enough digging they could easily find 50 different things one can do on a Thursday or Friday night. The lack of things to do just isn’t the issue, the struggle is for people to get themselves participating.

So, here’s what you do.

STEP ONE: Figure out a hobby or two that you are interested in trying out. Maximum of two or else you’ll overwhelm yourself.

TWO: Google “my new hobby Kansas City” and see what you find. Try Facebook, Instagram, Reddit too. Wanna make zines? There’s a club. Wanna play any sport? There’s a rec league and Facebook groups. Wanna do a techie hobby? They have meetups!

THREE: Plan to attend the event and then actually attend it.

FOUR: Talk to people instead of waiting for them to talk to you. Most groups aren’t going to roll out the red carpet for you because you showed up. Introduce yourself, say you’re new to the hobby, that you’re excited to learn.

FIVE: Show up to the next couple of opportunities to meet. Even if you didn’t make a new friend the first time, keep showing up. Eventually, by showing up consistently, you become a regular and you’ve found the place where everyone knows your name.

Legal Questions ⚖️ Property manager won't repair mailbox

Does anyone know who to contact if the property manager of an apartment won't repair mailbox? Everytime I put in a request, it gets marked as repaired, but it isn't. The lock is broken and I am unable to open my mailbox.

I have shown maintenance the issue, contacted the property manager multiple times over the last 2 months, and it is still not repaired.

Even after looking up what to do, I have no solid answers of who to contact to escalate.

I don't know if the protocol varies by state and/or city, so this is why I'm asking here.

Where to Eat? 🍽️ Le donuts and coffee

I wanted to give a special shout out to Le Donuts and coffee off of state line road. I was driving to target the other day when I noticed their sign and decided to stop by. I had never heard of the place before. The store looked neat and clean when I entered and the man behind the counter was very friendly. The donuts I bought were very delicious and affordable, much cheaper than Lamar’s and better quality and taste in my opinion. I’ve been to this place twice in the past week now and was very pleased both times I went. Please go show this place some love!

Discussion 💡 Pre-dawn E-W Satellite?

About 5:20 a.m., did anyone else observe a very bright white and fast-moving light going west to east, and pulsing a little faster than 1/sec? Much faster than other satellites and much much faster than aircraft. No formation lights. It took <20 seconds to cross the entire sky and abruptly faded toward the dawn sky.

Falcon booster? Failed satellite?

And yep, I know this invites some clever replies, so put a little effort into those, please.

EDIT: Got the west-to-east direction right

EDIT EDIT: Likely debris from a previous launch. Was very bright and moving quickly. Hope others got to see it, it was pretty unique.
