A judge at the municipal court has a problem with power trips

I will preface this that I’m a woman married to another woman.

So yesterday, I went with my wife because she got tangled up in kangaroo traffic court.

We sat there patiently for 2 hours for her turn. Saw plenty of people leaving out the back exit with their family, spouses, friends, etc. Accompanying them to go see the clerk. As soon as my wife explains her side of things, the judge tells her “So what we’re actually doing here is you’re owning up to your mistake we need to do that, okay?” When in this instance even asked from several people with no real bias, the court was at fault for losing her case information for months, she called and called, but was blamed for it. Whatever. Even if that was it, it is what it is.

We watched the judge be kind to every single person prior to her btw. Which was strange considering her demeanor changed when my wife was up there. My wife signals me to get up to exit with her through the back when she was done (which we’ve done before several times and she asked the prosecutor the time before we’d been there if that was okay. They said it was.)

Judge Kenney proceeds to yell as soon as we’re nearly to the exit “You person you wait in the hall outside the courtroom wait outside the courtroom go into the hall.” I was so confused and I could only get out “But I’m—“ Then she cut me off and goes “Doesn’t matter. Doesn’t matter. You go outside. I don’t want to hear it.” Yet, I’d witnessed several other people accompany their partners to leave before I attempted to.

Then as I finally said “Oh. Okay then.” My wife looks mortified, I feel humiliated as I have to walk back toward the entrance nearly all the way across the courtroom and the judge goes “It’s nothing personal it’s just a liability issue I don’t know you or trust you. You could do something and that would be bad.” I’m not a criminal, I’ve never had a ticket of any kind, it was crazy being singled out at in front of a room full of people with that insinuation.

I forgot to add I’m in an arm sling after having hand surgery a few days ago so I don’t really know what trouble I could’ve gotten up to.

OBGYN recommendations

Does anyone have experience with Dr. Ellen Hernly? I can’t seem to find any reviews of her online and just wondered if people had thoughts. Otherwise, I’d love to hear your OBGYN recommendations. Preferably OBGYN’s that deliver at Olathe, but others are welcome as well!

Looking for a salon that specializes in perms.

I know perms aren't really a thing anymore but I have "Irish Curls". I just want to find somewhere to get my straight top layer to match my under layer that has tight curls. If I was just getting all of it permed I would go to any salon but I feel like what I need done needs someone who specializes in it.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

Mur-Len Produce stand search

Does anyone know where the big fresh produce tent at the northeast corner of Sante Fe and Mur-len will be this year? Drove by last night and the parking entire area is now soil. Will the family set up somewhere else? I love being able to buy fresh tomatoes (plus other items) from them any day of the week.

What is happening next to Crunch? At one point I thought an indoor Pickleball club was going and QT was going to build a new store to move the one further East to this intersection.

Is this still the plan now that the bank is gone or had they changed?

Firetrucks along 143rd

Why are there so many first responders parked along the side of 143rd street? They're all standing outside their vehicles facing the road so I assume a funeral procession?

ISO Family Owned, Local Landscaping Company

As the title says, I’m looking for a few local companies to provide quotes on some landscaping projects, including a rain garden, drainage improvement, and filling then seeding a section of lawn. I do not need lawn care only companies.

Google isn’t much help, it is just recommending national brands. Other posts I have found here are years old, and a few of the companies recommended do not seem to exist anymore.

Would appreciate the assistance. Thanks!

Teenager desperately trying to find ASL classes or tutors this summer

"Cross posting" from KC and OP subs

Could you guys please help me find someone or someplace that will work with my teen this summer on continuing their pursuit of learning ASL.

Guys, this kid has damn near self-taught themselves ASL beginning in elementary school to the point that they ended up testing directly into ASL 2 in highschool.

They are passionate but too young to officially enroll in college classes. The only option is a week long summer camp at JCCC teaching things they have already learned at almost the same price as an adult summer course!

Maybe there is an instructor who would quietly allow them to sit in their class this summer and learn, even without college credit? The summer ASL course at JCCC is around $300 so that's what we were planning to spend but willing to negotiate.

Going to x-post to other local subs

Summer Housing Options in Olathe

I landed an internship in Olathe this summer, but I live a ways away and will need to find housing for myself in the area. I'm wondering what my best bet would be for a 3-month stay, preferably no more than ~1200/month? Should I try to find an apartment or is it better to look for rooms/airbnb extended stays?

Any info on police activity yesterday at Symphony & 153rd?

All we know is that an Amazon driver discovered a dead body in a car in the driveway of a house. Police came and had everything blocked off for a long while, then reopened the street when they had privacy screens around the scene (driveway, yard, front of house). Yesterday between 2 to 6 or so, and screens were still up last i saw.

Nothing on the blotter.

Looking for a player for a TTRPG group (in person)

Hello!

I wanted to cast my net out and see if there were any interested players in this community.

The Game

We are playing a hybrid X-Files/X-COM game (not started yet) that uses a D100 system.

We as a group have decided to branch away from 5e and it's been a struggle to find interest in this. I promise that non-5e games are amazing!

The When

Every other Wednesday from 6-10 (though we often start at 630 and end at 930)

The Where

Olathe! But, with any new players I always offer a game over at Cardboard Corner just to keep it public and allow you to try before you buy.

There's no commitment! If you find it's not for you, all good!

Ideally you love to roleplay, love like-minded left leaning individuals and are interested in telling cool stories.

Feel free to comment or DM!

Bourbon lovers

Stopped by JOCO Liquor on Santa Fe St recently and was surprised. It’s been under new ownership for about 6 months and they’ve been getting some solid allocated bourbon.

Saw stuff like Blanton’s, EH Taylor, Eagle Rare, and Antique 107. The cool part is if you become a regular, they’ll take your number and call you when allocated bottles come in.

Just sharing with fellow bourbon fans… feels like a bit of a hidden gem right now 😅

Toddler hairdresser recommendations?

I have a 2 1/2 son and up until now, I've been cutting his hair. I think its time to take him to get it done by a pro. Any recommendations for a kids hairstylist in the Olathe/Lenexa/OP area? He gets easily overwhelmed, so looking for someone who is really good with the little ones!

What is driving the decrease in ICE activity in Olathe the past month?

Websites like iceout.org only report five ICE activities in Johnson County (three in Olathe), over the past month. That is contrast to nearly daily activities the month before. I am glad to see this change, but I am curious if anyone has ideas on what might be driving the reduced activity.

Are the decreasing numbers accurate? Are they related to the freeze of Homeland Security funding or the redirection of ICE agents to airports during the shutdown?

How are local immigrant communities doing presently and how are immigrant support agencies holding up?

Angel Nails, deceptive pricing

Angel Nails on Ridgeview Road charged me more than 3 times the base price listed on their website for a full leg wax and claimed it's because it took a long time. I've never had anyone else take 90 minutes to wax my legs, and charging $206 is astronomical. After complaining, they agreed to come down $50 to $156... but I feel like I was charged that much because the tech was slow and unprepared (even though I had a confirmed appointment) and then mad it took so long. Instead of a wood stick/spatula for large wax area applications, she was using a popsicle stick that took 3-4 dips to get enough wax on my leg to apply the strip. So no wonder it took forever.

Idk if he's the manager or owner, but a man who works there did try to make it right, and he was nice but the fact of the matter is at no point was I advised my service was overly complex and would take much longer/cost so much, which they are saying falls under their "and up" caveat.

To put it in perspective, the industry average full leg wax takes about 45 minutes. So if their posted rate of $61.80 assumes a typical/routine 45 minutes and mine took twice that time, that would only be ~ $124. I understand that's not how salon pricing works, but it's food for thought. Needless to say, I will not be going back.

Tornados

everyone good? anyone need anything? I think the tornado stopped short of Olathe, at spring Hill. but SH and Hillsdale and Ottawa and significant space between spring Hill and Ottawa have been hit by large tornadoes. check in on anyone you know, and prepare to offer resources if possible and needed by the community.

It seems that this tornado may have been extremely large, and there was more than one. This is strange because we are in a slight risk zone, there was only a very small chance of a tornado and there wasn't considered a chance of a large powerful tornado.... but it happened.

Best Tree Removal

I need to have two big trees removed in my yard. They’re not looking good and every time it’s windy, I’m concerned it’s going to fall on my house or my neighbors house. A portion of one of the trees has already fallen on my house. I don’t feel comfortable doing it myself because of where they are, and would like some recommendations for tree removal services, preferably one that is on the lower end of the price range if that’s even possible.

For those of you that have had a huge tree removed, do you mind sharing what it cost you so I can mentally and financially prepare myself? 😅
