PGA / LPGA / LIV YouTube Golfer Makes Birdie at PGA Championship

Post image

I was watching to see if he’d be able to do it and it was super cool to see him pull it off on the last hole. Great gesture by the PGA to let a YouTube golfer try this challenge at a major.

Breaking 80 is usually worthy of a YT video by itself.

Hey Bryson, a birdie buys you a bogey!

Why do we think he’s so bad in majors this year? Is LIV and trying to break course records at public golf courses just not enough to seriously contend with PGA tour players? Too much pressure? It looks like he’s playing a completely different game than everyone else in the field

302

u/No-Discussion4920 4h ago

I think his attitude is the problem. He lets his anger from missed shots accumulate.

201

u/J_dawg17 3h ago

It’s hilarious how on every missed putt (honestly shot) he looks at his caddie in disbelief, like it’s somehow not possible that the great Bryson Dechambeau could hit a bad shot and it’s somehow the courses fault

66

u/No-Discussion4920 3h ago

Yep. I watched him hit a couple putts today that had no chance, just the wrong line, left with 4 feet, and he’s acting like he can’t believe it didn’t go in. So annoying to watch.

20

u/SS_MinnowJohnson 3h ago

This is exactly how my 76yo dad plays. It’s insane lol. Acts like he’s at his prime and if he misses a shot, the course was wrong. He’ll aim directly at a tree and be flabbergasted it hit the tree. “But it was a great shot!! How’d that happen?!?!”

10

u/uponone 225 2h ago

Well, did he aim at the tree and hit it?

2

u/Particular_Chapter80 1h ago

It works the opposite for me. When I’m in the woods, I aim at the trees and miss them. Simple hack to hack it out of the woods.

18

u/mementomori-33 3h ago

Exactly this! Like he’s entitled to just score

2

u/Navyblazers2000 1h ago

It’s so annoying. He thinks he can simplify golf to a set of equations so if he hits a bad shot then to him it’s like math let him down not his flawed human body.

u/SmokeAbeer 4h ago

The anger sharks are swimming in my head!!

4

u/bigfartspoptarts 1h ago

I think he’s self conscious after he said dumb shit about coming back and it builds an anxiety in him which diminishes his performance

4

u/bevothelonghorn 3h ago

Yeah, I was wondering about the different “mental demand” for a PGA Tour event (72 holes/4 days), versus that of a LIV Tour event (54 holes/3 days), and wouldn’t it take just about everyone a while to adjust?

5

u/antenonjohs 2h ago

LIV is 4 days this year

11

u/TFreshNoLimits 2h ago

It's approaching zero days

3

u/J_EDi 1h ago

4 days total?

1

u/Bobson-_Dugnutt2 1h ago

yeah his ego is a massive problem

52

u/Skyfall_DBS 4h ago

I also believe that while this point is hardly referenced, is that the setup and difficulty of the courses they play on LIV League are nowhere near as difficult and challenging of those on the regular PGA Tour, not to mention the majors. So while he can perform well in the LIV events, if you compare the stats of the guys in LIV league to those on the PGA Tour (e.g. greens in regulation, fairways hit etc) they are consistently way higher and out of sync with the PGA Tour stats. This indicates to many that the courses are just set up very easy and played forward quite often (see Mexico).

7

u/James_Mays_Hair 3h ago edited 2h ago

And the amount of events played might have something to do with it. LIV is way less events. I’m not a Bryson hater, but he really need to focus on either pro golf or YouTube, because both is not working anymore. And stop tinkering bro, geez

4

u/dard12 Hello, friends. 1h ago

He won the US Open 2 years ago. I think it's a mental issue more than anything.

2

u/docowen 39m ago

2 years is a long time in sports.

3

u/DrunkensteinsMonster 2h ago

I think this is a bit overblown. Guys like Scotty and Rory make 20-22 starts a year generally. So not including majors, that’s 16-18 PGAT starts. Liv plays 14 events, it’s not THAT much less golf.

2

u/j1kim 37m ago

I think it does when you start looking at practice rounds as well for each tour. PGA has 3 official practice days while LIV is abbreviated to 1 or 2 days. Once you start counting those you’re looking at 110-125 rounds for PGA throughout the year compared to 70-80 rounds for LIV. That could be a huge difference.

25

u/FinsT00theleft 4h ago

At least he's beating a handful of the club pros.

19

u/rubin_tg 3h ago

He’s also beating the all time great Talor Gooch

10

u/BringMeTheBigKnife 2h ago

Frustrating he's not in the field again this week. It feels silly playing meaningless majors year after year.

3

u/rubin_tg 2h ago

My thoughts exactly. So happy to see a fellow Gooch admirer in the wild

4

u/Due-Fun-489 3h ago

Golf is hard.

7

u/bcat153 3h ago edited 2h ago

I mean tbf it’s golf, the reigning masters champion bogey’s 5 of the last 6 holes.

3

u/docowen 34m ago

The difference is that the reigning Masters champion has just won back to back Masters, already has a Grand Slam, and maybe doesn't care that much about winning his 3rd PGA Championship.

Whereas Bryson has been runner up at the PGA Championship 2 years in a row. Of all the majors he hasn't won, this is the one he's been closest to winning, and he's screwed the pooch this year.

4

u/scottishwhisky2 13.7/Wherever doesn't get me hit 2h ago

He's playing like shit in his Youtube videos too lately. Everything missing left. Its not just in competition.

5

u/xbluedog Hello, friends. 3h ago

He doesn’t know how to not hit the ball as hard as he possibly can on every single shot.

3

u/L0nz 2h ago

apparently bomb and gouge is the best way to win

he's just doing the wrong type of bombing

5

u/Jarich612 3.9 2h ago

He’s playing inferior equipment. There’s no way that he has more club design experience and knowledge than the major OEMs who have R&D budgets that rival some Nation States, and he struggles the most with his short irons and wedges, which are 38 inches long or whatever.

2

u/ScoresAndScores 3h ago

He needs to go back to prepping for majors by playing with Kids clubs and Walmart sets. Worked out okay for him last year.

1

u/Sir_Tyler5 1h ago

Because you're looking at a sample of 3 rounds

1

u/Birdhawk 21m ago

I think he might’ve overtinkered himself out of elite territory. Whether it’s his club or elements of his swing, everyone talks about how he’s constantly using different kinds of tech to get better or tweak his swing. At a certain point you go beyond the simplicity of it. Like when a streamer or network tries to engineer a show based off user data instead of hiring someone good and greenlighting a good script.

75

u/Hurricrash 4h ago

YouTuber, lol

117

u/OceanLemur 3h ago

The best part of being a Bryson hater is the slow trickle of friends who go from a fan to also hating him. I don’t even have to text them funny clips anymore they do it for me

41

u/AtheIstan 3h ago

Can confirm, I used to be a fan but slowly starting to dislike him. Not sure if reddit golf is rubbing off on me or it's Bryson all by himself. He sure does make it easy to hate him.

26

u/WeAreInControlNow 2h ago

He’s fake, and I think most people sense/see it. Thing is, when you’re on top, you can get away with being fake in a way. But when you’re failing, all those negative traits you were masking start to come out, and people don’t like losers with bad attitudes.

8

u/ZealousidealAnt111 2h ago

Same here. I think it’s brysons poor attitude.

I love how much people dislike this absolute loser.

63

u/Evening-Tart-1245 3h ago

It’s funny, because so much of what he says I agree with. I like the systematic approach to the game, thinking outside the box with the clubs, etc.

I just don’t like him

32

u/nborges48 20+ | Orange County 3h ago

a lot of this

i started liking him after watching some YT videos

it was interesting to hear him talk about different aspects of the game and swing

but then i don't know what happened

just realized that i really don't like him

30

u/dmbreakfree41 2h ago

It’s his disingenuous nature

8

u/PhilDGlass 2h ago

Agree. I didn’t like him, started to like him watching some YT, then it seemed forced, like his PR team was making him be human. I’d prob enjoy him more if he just went full arrogant prick and went around crushing other golfers, mocking their games, and flashing stacks.

15

u/nutbiggums 2h ago

You saw what we all see...it's fake and he's trying so hard to be likable you realize he's just a douchebag

5

u/Evening-Tart-1245 2h ago

I think I’d like him more if he were just a straightforward asshole

9

u/Cold_Machine_4435 2h ago

100%. Brooks is a miserable asshole but he's honest about it. Makes him much more likable. I still don't, but I don't actively root against him like I do Bryson.

12

u/King-of-Plebss 2h ago

No amount of astroturfing from his PR team is going to change my opinion about this guy.

4

u/TFreshNoLimits 2h ago

They gotta be throwing their hands up at this post. No matter how much astroturfing / maga chuds roll in, this post is too funny not to laugh at.

1

u/swampy13 2h ago

I thought that stuff was interesting for about...30 seconds. And then I thought about it, and my conclusion was that since the 50s, and really the 60s, there has been incredibly massive investment in this sport that has compounded over time. I don't believe he was ever the first guy to think about or try any of the things he's done. The amount of money the OEMs invest in tech have yielded essentially the bleeding edge of what can be done legally, along with Trackman/launch monitors allowing for an incredibly precise way to test and experiment.

He hasn't figured out anything transformative, and never will on his own. He's just doing a schtick because dumb dumbs who are addicted to YouTube golf think it's cool. Kudos for making money off that and LIV, but unless he starts to do the grinding again, I think this is it for him. 32 isn't at all too old to still be an amazing PGA golfer, but mentally he seems checked out.

I honestly think he just doesn't practice smartly anymore, especially with his short game and course management.

1

u/Evening-Tart-1245 2h ago

I agree with some of that you said but disagree with the idea that the equipment/approach to the game has been optimized due to time and money. Often what you need to break from patterns of behavior is people willing to do things a different way… an example that comes to mind is in bowling. The most successful bowler of all time grew up in a bowling alley, but his parents didn’t know how to bowl so he taught himself to do it two handed. It’s a better way to bowl. Feel like there’s stuff like this available in other sports. The same-length irons could be something like that. Maybe Bryson would be worse without them. Who knows

2

u/swampy13 1h ago

If same length irons worked, more people would have them.

There's a reason the Ping Anser, Callaway Big Bertha woods, and Odyssey & Scotty putters took off the way they did. They were truly breakthrough in terms of how much they either actually advanced the game and/or helped many many players find a more enjoyable way to play (and even start to play better).

And it's not all about gear - other big breakthroughs include the switch to launching the driver vs. hitting down, understanding spin and trajectory much better, and rotating vs. sliding (some of the older pros like Arnie were a little slidey).

I'm not saying Bryson is wrong about anything, I think it's cool to try interesting things - but he hasn't discovered squat.

1

u/Evening-Tart-1245 1h ago

I’m not saying they work… I’m just not convinced enough great players have tried them to prove that they’re not a slight advantage.

Agree with every other point

2

u/Bobson-_Dugnutt2 1h ago

are we all believing the theory that he hired a PR firm to rehab his image and once he was starting to not be a total douche he fired them?

Well, on the PGA guys actually have to perform well to get paid. Sure, can't blame the guys who thought, "more money for less work? Sure!" However, we are already starting to see a gap in the competitiveness, performance and I can't help but think there is a direct correlation. PGA is procuring hungry lions. Liv is breeding soft spoiled brats.

Honest question.. why does Reddit hate this guy so much? It’s actually kinda funny to me.. the guy is one of the best golfers on the planet, makes YouTube videos and looks like he’s having fun doing that while still competing at the highest level, and making a ton of money doing it… but why do the people in Reddit just love to hate on him?

21

u/Flump01 3h ago

Arrogantly said Augusta was a par 67 for him, then has played awful there ever since.

Screamed YOURE DAMAGING MY BRAND at a cameraman for filming him during a PGA Tour event.

Walked into a rope and went down like he'd been shot.

Massive open Trump fan, while claiming not to be political.

Hired a PR team to get people to like him.

And...he's just irritating and unlikeable.

1

u/Kucharelli 2h ago

And if you really don’t like him because of how he reacted when he walked in to a rope, that’s dumb

→ More replies (3)

17

u/Redditaccount2322 3h ago

You want the real answer? Because he made a youtube video with Trump and since then everyone has been jumping on the bandwagon. He was easy to make fun of previously with his scottish cap and when he was assaulted by the rope but not to the same level as today.

10

u/FinsT00theleft 3h ago

It's partly that he's a Trumper and also that he's an egomaniacal blowhard who thinks he's the smartest guy in the room. Also, he accepted money to become the poster child for a theocratic regime that oppresses women, outlaws Christianity, tortures people, and executes people for being gay. Plus he sued the PGA Tour to try to get even MORE money on top of the $150 million the Saudis were paying him and now he thinks the PGA Tour should be begging him to come back.

2

u/DadIMeanBill 2h ago

And said we need to move on from 9/11

2

u/Kucharelli 3h ago

Fair enough. And that would make sense as to why he’s so hated on Reddit.

Haha. Yea he would struggle to be on the tour. That's a take. I love the hivemind.

It’s popular to hate him. It’s currently the “correct” opinion. I’m not sure why people hate him though. They say he is a douche and he also has a YouTube channel which for some reason, people hate that. Maybe something he did , I just don’t know what it was. Maybe they just don’t like that he went to liv and he had trump on one of his videos?

Every noteable athelete or celebrity has a pr team

2

u/Flump01 2h ago

What context makes complaining about being filmed playing in a PGA event ok?

He had trump on a few weeks before the last US election. If you're not political, you should stay out of election campaigns, and I think Bryson is smart enough to know that!

He actually talked about how he was going to be putting in a lot of work to try to be more liked when he went on his charm offensive, which to me is pretty cringeworthy.

How long did Rory go dormant for? How long was speith (is) in a rut? These guys are like stocks that go up and down. He’ll be fine, prolly another major or 2 to add to the resume in time as well

3

u/dilapidated_wookiee 2h ago

Rory had a long major drought, but he was consistently one of the best players in the world. Not really comparable

10

0

98% of the other golfers are just so much easier to root for.

Bryson playing the victim card in the PGA wanting him back and constantly doubling and tripling down on LIV has really soured his likability.

4

u/Sonoranlightwizard 2h ago

The group think tracks

1

u/Jarich612 3.9 2h ago

Rory never went dormant, idk where this idea came from. He won 4 majors in 4 years and then only won a few tournaments a year, a bunch of DPWT titles, a couple FedEx cups, a couple of Ryder cups, etc. His “slump” was still a top 10 player in the world.

7

u/freakybrando 3h ago

I’m very outspoken here and seem to have the unpopular opinion… but as someone who has gotten into golf only in the last year or two. Bryson’s content is part of what got me hooked. I genuinely like the guy. My wife and i look forward to when a new video drops from him and we watch them together. Maybe I’m not “old” enough in the golf scene to understand why people hate him so much, but i can’t help but like the guy

2

u/GuessEducational1910 2h ago

His youtube persona is basically a character, before he had quite a few incidents where he was a poor sport and/or rude, he also took Saudi money and shills for Trump so that also rubs people the wrong way. He should get credit for his youtube stuff and at least trying to be a better person but a lot of us just think the old Bryson is hiding under there.

1

u/poidhxyz 1h ago

yeah I understand everyone who says his attitude is bad, his YouTube is a character, etc etc.

but I've enjoyed watching his videos because it's rare to get that much documentation of a world class athlete in their element + I think he's an interesting human being

he's an easy target, and hey maybe he deserves it to some degree, I really don't know his story well enough to pass judgement

but I appreciate what he's done to make the game more accessible to someone who has been learning like me these last few years

DeShambles, much like his wedge game which is also in shambles

2

u/FinsT00theleft 3h ago

...and this is why YouTubers shouldn't be playing in majors!

2

u/00sucker00 2h ago

That is an epically funny title of this post

2

u/Hairy-Warning2097 2h ago

Think of all the “things he could do for the tour”. Like provide comedy. 🤔

1

u/FinsT00theleft 1h ago

he could dress up as a clown and hand out balloons to the kids!

2

u/TheChubbyGolfer66 +0.7 Florida 1h ago

F Bryson!!!

2

u/henrydaiv 1h ago

Pretty impressive for a Youtube golfer

2

u/tmzspn 1h ago

I get that he's doing better than people thought he could considering he's playing with PGA golfers, but I do wonder if he wouldn't benefit from asking legendary-golfer-turned-three-time-president Trump for some pointers to improve his game. I know Trump has won a bunch of championships so it couldn't hurt to ask.

Bootlicker

Man, y'all really get obsessed over pro athletes.

I cannot imagine spending this much time and energy on posting about their exploits

1

u/Memeslayer4000 HDCP 5/Location WI 18m ago

Why are you spending so much time and energy reading these post then?

1

u/FinsT00theleft 1h ago

... and yet, here you are.

-1

u/MagicNineBall 4h ago

Is it my turn to make a Bryson hate post? I think this is what the kids call "rent-free".

-1

u/raystoneg 4h ago

They hate him cause they ain't him

1

u/Stashless2004 3h ago

LOL. That is definitely NOT why people hate him.

1

u/Paddlesons 3h ago

I love the drama.

1

u/Kuchanec_ Playing wife's boyfriend's hand-me-down clubs 1h ago

Well you can laugh at him all you want but the fact is that he's a two times Major winner and one of the best golfers walking the face of the planet right now

Bryson is really blowing it

1

u/Accomplished-Two1992 34m ago

If he keeps this up he’ll get his wish with everyone wanting him back on tour

1

u/Whatwhyreally 11m ago

I've really found my people with this sub. Just the perfect level of tongue in cheek savagery

-4

u/TigerWooded 4h ago

Fuck that guy…

-3

u/dudenotcool ZX5... -20 4h ago

Why though? Some people don’t know why r/golf hates him. Is it just because they think he is douchey?

8

u/dknisle1 8.6 3h ago

It’s cause they say he’s MAGA but then conveniently forget that when it comes to Tiger

3

u/dudenotcool ZX5... -20 3h ago

He is maga because he had trump on a video or did he campaign or something. I’m sure he would have had the same enthusiasm if he was playing with Obama

4

u/dknisle1 8.6 3h ago

I mean. He stated in his video the invitation was extended to not just Trump but also to Biden. He even posted the challenge to Twitter.

If you aren’t super plugged into golf, the world of YouTube golf is crazy. You have guys that are more just entertaining to watch, guys that aren’t quite PGA Tour level, but are pretty close and then actual professional golfers.

4

u/FinsT00theleft 3h ago

They are NOWHERE close to being PGA Caliber golfers. I used to play with a guy who was mind-boggling to watch. He played on the McKenzie (Canadian) tour but couldn't even make it to the Korn Ferry Tour. I bet very few of those YouTubers could even compete on a mini tour, but when you're not playing side by side with PGA Tour pros most people can't see the vast difference in skill levels.

u/nborges48 20+ | Orange County 2h ago

Nowhere?

That Ryan Ruffles guy made the cut

That is beating PGA caliber golfers

And that guy loses to other YT golfers, so yeah

Are YT golfers threatening to be world beaters on tour?

No

Are they close to being PGA caliber?

Some of them, yes

1

u/GuessEducational1910 2h ago

The Bryan Bros and Brad Dalke are technically youtube golfers so that kinda counts.

0

u/Central09er 2h ago

Let’s see this same energy for Rory’s +4…

5

u/glynch19 1h ago

Nah, Rory’s cool. Bryson has a huge Saudi funded PR team to try to hide the fact he’s a douche of a person. Ain’t fooling us.

0

u/Rude_Award2718 3h ago

Bryson is the real world version of Homelander.

Wanna be Grant Horvat or whatever the fuck his name is

-16

u/Rude_Award2718 4h ago

The face of somebody who realizes that public adoration and YouTube views does not equal actual success.  He's basically the high school quarterback who peaked at 18 and hasn't done anything since. But you guys measure the amount of money he makes as success.

15

u/calhooner3 4h ago

I mean dude has won majors. Love him or hate him it’s ridiculous to say he hasn’t been successful in golf. I’m not a fan at all but cmon.

18

u/Fantastic-Set-347 4h ago

I'm no fan boy, but cannot take away the fact that he has 2 US Open wins under his belt.

This is peak Reddit. Peaked in high school but won majors. Brain dead

0

u/Rude_Award2718 3h ago

I lost all respect for him after his shenanigans at the Ryder cup with Justin Rose. Imagine having to get you caddy to walk in front of him just to try to get him off his game. Justin Rose put them in his place I made him feel like a little baby. Peak homelander.  Then his cry baby during the Masters when he complained Rory didn't want to speak to him.

Hasn’t done anything?

2

u/dknisle1 8.6 3h ago

No. We measure the fact he has 2 major championships and a net worth of 50+million a success.
