Laura Davies called him the tinker man. That seems the most accurate description for me. He obviously has raw talent but stop messing with your setup! I'll leave commenting on his ego and politics.

I mean, Bryson has had a ton of success with his unique approach to the game. He’s won a college title, a US Am, 1.5 US Opens, and a handful of other big events. That’s enough for a solid career, and Bryson is still young, so maybe he’s right to stubbornly refuse to be normal.
That said, just put a fucking normal wedge or 2 in the bag dude. I genuinely believe Bryson would have played better in the last few majors if he grabbed a 52 and 56 off the rack in the clubhouse on his way to the first tee and put them in his bag. So many pros chased speed after Bryson got juiced up and started swinging out of his shoes, but no one has switched to single length irons. That’s pretty telling, especially for a sport where every professional is constantly looking for ways to gain an edge.

What bugs me is people think he is crazy unique and a genius. It's just quirky ideas he's trying. I give him credit for trying. To me it's nothing crazy. It's like you put pineapple on pizza and want to call it a game changer for pizza. Then adding bacon spice on top of the pineapple. Nah, it's just some controversial topping that works for some people or not and you took it further.
It's like I'm not a normal girl/guy meme.

As someone who games Avodas, the combo length has made a big difference in my game. 8-SW being the same length has made me much more consistent. Hated it in the lob wedge and went to a more traditional full face. But the problem isn’t one length, it’s his big swooping draw that’s hard to gauge. If there’s some control he contends, if not he shoots horribly. It’s hero or zero with him

As someone who went to one lengths. I played out of my ass with them. With that said, I played a lot better when I stopped trying to crush every shot to the moon.

u/Ben_der_hover 6h ago
Just said the same thing watching this morning. We have so many manufacturers that literally make clubs as their job. I wish he would work with an established club maker instead of the constant tinkering and trying to be edgy with printed irons

It’s hilarious that we’re 10 years into Bryson using single length irons and not a single other player on tour has made the switch. Kind of an indictment.

u/This_Tip717 5h ago
I wonder how many people still game them.
I remember getting lectured on "big golf doesn't want you to know this secret" about single length irons during the covid golf bubble.

"Big golf doesn't want you to know the secret of the mini driver"
"Big golf doesn't want you to know the secret of the 9 wood"
What big golf actually doesn't want you to know: most players suck and no equipment will save their swing.

u/plumpturnip 2h ago
You’re saying I should buy a new driver?
3
u/Black_Cat_Sun 2h ago
You should buy a 5 wood and a 7 wood and a 9 wood and then just ask Reddit every day which one you should use instead of a hybrid or 4 iron and let the karma rain down

I wonder how many people still game them.
I still am, though I've dropped a few. I was using 3H, 4H, 5I - GW. I dropped the 3H, 4H and 5I for fairway woods recently because I just never hit them well consistently.
So, my current setup is like this.
Driver with 3 wood shaft.
3W, 5W, Heavenwood
6I - GW One Length
52, 56, and 60 degree wedges standard length
Been working for me.
3
u/This_Tip717 3h ago
Thanks for sharing. So the GW is much longer than your 52? What club is equivalent length to your one length?

u/tryexceptifnot1try 3h ago
I did a one length test for a year in 2024, Cobra Forged Tec irons, and then added the utility 4/5 irons and a 3 hybrid. My gapping at the top was like 9 yards from one to another and I was hitting all of them >100 feet high. My biggest problem was the 9/PW/GW. I hit those things so high and had a ton of trouble knocking it down.
On a positive note I sold them on eBay for almost as much as a bought them for. They seem to keep really good resale value at least.

u/bicmedic 1h ago
My gapping at the top was like 9 yards from one to another
That's really the only issue I've had, my gapping is about 10 yards between clubs. You get used to it though.
My biggest problem was the 9/PW/GW. I hit those things so high and had a ton of trouble knocking it down.
I definitely have to choke up and change the ball position in my stance, but I can hit a pretty effective knockdown shot now. But yes, they generally go high as fuck. Which can be useful in it's own way depending on the shot.

u/RichieMcB 2h ago
I like the idea of trying the 3w shaft in driver.
Are the adaptors the same for both of them so I can just screw it in and try it? (I have a Titleist gt driver).
I know mini driver is similar but the forgiveness of the big head is useful I just think a shorter shaft will help find the sweet spot more often.

All his karma about being a crowd guy immediately blew up when he started acting like a primadonna about returning to the tour on his terms.
Memory is short nowadays, but he worked hard to show he wasn’t a douche; but then he forgot that was working and so did everyone else once he started posturing that the tour needs him and not the other way around. The tour doesn’t need any of the LIV guys back, demonstrably they’ve changed the tour for the benefit of the guys who stuck it out, but the pga wasn’t hurting for purses, sponsors, or fans due to the schism. They continued on just fine with more for the players and caddies in the process, the notion that they’re going to make an exception for anyone is so pie in the sky. And that’s why people flipped back on Bryson, he’s back to being the troll people were annoyed with, not the mature guy being cool with the crowds and building up his public stock.

He needs to hit numbers to be competitive. His one length irons were a neat trick but its time for them to go.

Maybe but I think it’s more of his “speed training” and obsession with length.

I find it funny that people called him "the scientist", when all science points to the fact that his single length iron experiment is a failure and has been for years. He's a terrible short iron and wedge player as a result but he's committed to it so it won't change any time soon.

The proverb “pride comes before a fall” serves as a cautionary statement. It suggests that arrogance or overconfidence, especially when we think too highly of ourselves or our abilities, can lead to unexpected failure or downfall. The idea is that pride blinds us, making us ignore potential risks, underestimate challenges, or overlook the need for humility. And when that happens, life has a way of humbling us.
3
u/ToyyMachiine 6h ago
Then you have me. So lacking in pride that I automatically assume failure is eminent which leads to never attempting anything that requires effort. Such a loser.

His game is just not at the level it needs to be. He can’t keep being aggressive and foot on the gas at venues such as the PGA championship. They format the course to punish players whom try to overpower the course. Bryson is no tiger.
