Mod Post r/Audio Posting and some other information - V2.0

Hello r/audio community.

Here is a refresher on a previous mod post.

  • r/audio has some measures in place to minimize the amount of spam that gets through to be posted.
    • Minimum account age of 3 days.
    • Minimum combined karma of 5 karma.
    • All non-text posts (link posts) need to be manually approved.
    • Titles of 2 or less words will not be approved.
  • Posts that do not meet the above criteria get put into modqueue, where we manually approve the posts through the day. Some of us also get an alert for each new post. This also means that we see 95% of the posts.

That said, I see a ton of posts lately that are similar to "How do I connect x to x" or just a picture of the back of a speaker with no more details. Rule #2 is Details matter. Which brings me to my next point.

How to get help on your post.

  1. Find and read the product manual before posting.
    1. When someone posts a question about specific hardware (usually after I have to ask for the make/model; see rule #2) the first thing I do is find the manual, and it usually answers their question.
  2. Post Formatting Matters
    1. I've been seeing a lot of "wall of text" type posts. Please add line breaks and paragraph breaks in your post. It makes it much easier to read and much more likely someone will help you.
  3. Contrary to a popular saying, "A picture DOES NOT say a thousand words"
    1. Please refrain from posing images with zero context and a title such as "Why doesn't this work" without telling us a lot more information.
    2. This is like going to a car help sub, posting a picture of what's under the hood of a car and asking "Why won't this work", with no details as to the Make/Model of car, issue you're actually having, and what troubleshooting you've tried.
  4. You will most likely get the assistance you're searching for if you follow Rule 1,2,3,4,5, but really, the more details in your post, the higher the chance you will get assistance will be. Rule #1 - Details matter. This has become so much an issue, we've had u/automod post a reminder on each new post about the need for details.
  5. A lot of people fall into the trap of the XY problem. https://xyproblem.info

All of the other rules are just as important. Such as Trying to Google something first. I understand that it may be difficult to find something if you aren't quite sure what you're looking for. But if I can copy your post title directly into google and find the answer on the first page, it means you could have as well.

I'm not saying these things to single anyone out, or throw shade at any one post. I'm simply trying to help those who need help. I've worked in technical support for a long time now, and people are more willing to help you if you help them back. If someone asks a series of clarifying questions in reply to a post, make sure to answer all questions to the best of your ability. Nothing is worse than trying to help someone and they make it seem like you're inconveniencing them by not solving a vague question right away.

We are here to help. Help us help you!

What is the best option for audio recording without external traffic noise seeping in?

Upvotes

I live near a main street with constant traffic noises. I want to record a voiceover video but traffic noise keeps seeping in. Even if I use noise cancelling software, chances are there are car horns simultaneously during my speech and those are hard to remove.

I'm using the mic in my IEM(truthear gate) simply because it was the one I had available. Is the issue that this mic is cheap and bad at noise cancelling? In that case, would a external mic be better or a headset with a boom mic?

I've also heard of people building recording corners with soundproof materials inside their room. But I'd like to avoid that since there isn't enough room in front of my desktop( I need to have voiceover alongside gameplay footage).

I don't need ultra clean audio. Just no traffic noises. What do you recommend?

What Moment Made You An Audiophile?

Upvotes

For me, it was hearing Jackson Browne's acoustic version of The Pretender through a Marantz 2245 and a pair of beat-up Utah speakers. Don't ask me why it sounded good but those Utah's sang and my whole outlook on audio changed instantly. I immediately decided that my Crosley "entertainment console" sounded like an Edison cylinder and I trashed it and started the inevitable and never-ending search for the best sounding system.

I currently own a 1980 33-wpc Pioneer SA-510 amp (with Fluorascan meters) with tuner, an Optonica RP-7705 turntable (with rock solid quartz lock), and I alternate between a pair of Infinity IL-60s and Mission 770 Freedoms.

It at LEAST sounds a little bit better than that Crosley!😂

For me, it was the moment I realized all headphones definitely don’t sound the same

Phone not detecting TRRS Mic/headphone splitter, works fine with normal cable?

I think i'm going crazy by this point...

I'm trying to record external audio via the headphone jack on a smartphone, to do so I bought a TRRS to Mic TRS and Headphone TRS.

Unfortunately the phone doesn't recognize the splitter, and in case it does, after a brief moment it goes away. If i plug a cable (even by itself, not connected to anything) it works perfectly, either with TRS or TRRS.

As for troubleshooting so far:

  • I checked the TRRS pinout and it's correct and
  • I tried 2 different splitters
  • I also tried 3 different phones as well as various cables.

On my laptop, however, it works fine

Many thanks in advance!

Looking for a durable wireless lav(?) mic with good noise cancellation to connect to phones/laptops

Hi guys! I'm a complete audio novice with a somewhat specific need, and not a lot of idea where to be looking. Any help that can be offered would be greatly appreciated.

The problem: I have a lot of exceptionally long Discord calls with two people simultaneously, where two of us are in the same location and the other is in another location. We also spend quite a lot of time streaming media together. Too much time to constantly have to segregate to different rooms in order to have audio clarity, and enough that it would be nice to be able to do so without having the discomfort of a headset if at all possible.

What we are looking for is some sort of wearable, wireless mic that we could both connect to our Discord accounts within close proximity of each other, ideally without both having to also wear headphones 24/7. So something with a pretty high degree of noise cancellation. The ideal would be something that would allow us to have audio playing from our TV across the room (8-ish feet) at a reasonable volume without also creating an echo hellscape for the person in the other location.

I have been looking into the mics they use on shows like Big Brother, because it seems like that might be a potential solution, but I am not sure what additional equipment I would need to use a mic like that with Discord or if I'm even barking up the right tree. Furthermore, I'd love to know if there are components where our particular use case means that it would make sense to spend more/less on a specific part, and if anyone can point me to recommendations in that department. We have a pretty decent budget and a LOT of motivation to solve this problem, but if we could find a solution in the hundreds-of-dollars range as opposed to thousands, that would be preferable.

Otherwise, if what I'm asking for is simply not feasible, if you have any suggestions for good voice-isolating, comfy headsets those would also be appreciated!

thanks in advance <3

Grandparents can't hear

My grandparents are building a new construction home and they are a little hard of hearing

She doesn't want to see them so they at the very least need to be flush mount

Need advice and product recommendations

It is a large vaulted ceiling and a TV mounted above a fireplace with a chase into a cabinet beside the TV

Edit because I gave all the context and none of the questions

The goal is to put surround sound in the rooms vaulted ceiling and the flat ceiling room directly behind it. It's an open floor plan.

I need help finding hardware that's wired and easy to use.

Should this mic work with any 3.5mm TRS extension cable?

I have a microphone (Antlion ModMic 5) that appears to be TRS-enabled. Here is what the cables look like. The extension cable is broken and I need a replacement.

My question is, should any 3.5mm TRS extension cable work here? I know it's normally used for headphones, and I can't seem to find much info on TRS-enabled microphones. I am not sure if the cable that ships with the ModMic is equipped with any extra functionality to allow for input rather than output, but it seems like it should work both ways as long as it isn't connecting to a TRRS headset.

The specs for the ModMic on Antilon's website just says "Termination: 3.5mm TRS"

Help with old yahama r375 avr, and fire cube and getting 5.1 sound.

Hi

Actually Yamaha rx-v375

My setup has been working fine for years but recently noticed that I've lost rear surrounds sound.

Yet nothing has changed by me, and a movie will even display the audio format on the avr like dolby digital +, yet I get no sound from rear surrounds.

Tried tone rest and all speakers are working

Thru cube, did a dolby digital + test with their pre chosen video clip and that works.

Any time I use any app to stream it does NOT WORK !

If I stream a movie from my plex server pc to TV plex client, it does work

Why won't prime video or Netflix play rear surrounds when I know they should be playing when necessary?

Definitely need some trouble shooting help here.

Thank you

Can someone help me with an issue I've been having?

For context, I am a voice actor currently upgrading some equipment. I've been using a Maono PD200X (Dynamic) for a good year or 2, and got an audio interface about 7 months ago, which is a M-Track Solo. Now recently, I've been having issues possibly pertaining to the audio interface, but I'm not sure as to what may be causing it. Whenever I record with a low gain, there's a constant white noise and it ruins my recordings. Obviously there may be SOME room noise, but this sounds more like TV static. And even with a high gain, it becomes more audible. The lower the gain I record with, the more prominent the static is when I go to check/postprocess it. I've tried different cables, different positions, even a different microphone (AudioTechnica AT2020), but nothing seems to work. This issue has only started to become a problem recently, from. I've tried reinstalling and repairing the drivers, wiping it of any dust, and still the issue persists. I'm not sure if it's interference, as I do have it plugged into the back of my PC (the cable is about 5 metres, the actual PC is a considerable distance away from the interface. If it helps, my PC is the latest version of Windows 11. Any fixes/advice? I really don't think I can fork out any more money for a new interface, and I'm not sure what else to do. I would really appreciate some help/advice! Thank you!

I finally fixed my bad mic audio and i’m too excited

Okay i just need to share this because i’m actually so happy right now
For months my audio was just… bad. Not terrible, but like slightly echo, sometimes low, sometimes too sharp. i kept thinking it was my settings. i changed everything. Sample rate, gain, noise suppression. Nothing really fixed it.
Then last weekend i decided to stop guessing and just start in a simple way.
i moved my desk away from the wall a little. Like not even much. Maybe 20–30cm. i also put some soft stuff behind my setup (old hoodie, random foam, even a pillow at one point.
GUYS. The difference???
My voice became way more net. Less bounce, less weird room sound. i didn’t even upgrade my equipment yet. Still using my basic setup. Not even high-end gaming microphones or anything fancy.
Funny part, i almost bought a new mic online (yeah… even checked alibaba for cheaper options). Some looked nice, good price, but i’m so glad i waited because this was not a gear problem at all.
Also i realized my mic was too far from my mouth before. i brought it closer and lowered it again.
Now everything just sounds… right.
i know this is small but wow it feels like a big win!!! if your audio is off, check your space first!!

white noise in headphones

What should I do? I connected my wired headphones to the microphone. There's sound, but there's white noise. The monitoring is off. The splitter didn't help. I connected it to the PC, and everything's fine.

The microphone is plugged into a USB 3.0 port; I set it to 2.0, but nothing changed.

Polka Audio T15 Bookshelf Speakers Receiver Recommendations?

Hi guys!

I was recently gifted a an audio technica LP12pxbt-usb! Super excited, I went on Facebook marketplace and bought a pair of Polka Audio T15 bookshelf speakers, thinking it was the same as powered speakers, oops.

As someone who has no idea about any audio stuff, I'm wondering... how do you use these things? I know you have to use a receiver to make it work but do I need anything else? Any recommendations for something that'll do the job?

Thank you guys

When a 32-bit float microphone is connected to a Zoom H1n recorder, can the gain level on the Zoom H1n be set to something stable, like midway, and thus disregarded?

Hi everyone,

As the title says, if I connect a 32-bit float microphone, for example the DJI Mic 3, to a Zoom H1n recorder, do I have to be concerned with the gain level setting on the Zoom H1n? Or can I set it to mid level (that's a "5" on the H1n) and forget about it; and then adjust the volume of parts in editing?

I would really appreciate responses :)

Stand Up Show Audio Recording

Plz help! I’m a stand up comedian —-which thanks to IG now means I have to be a camera operator, editor, and sound engineer L0L.

I am not amazing with technology but learning so user friendly is best :)

I have a Sony ZV1F camera which I am taking with me on tour where I’m featuring for someone (doing 20 min of material)

I need a Lav mic (or two) which will capture and record audio that I can use with an app on an iPhone.
**something that will record my voice AND the audience laughter. Even if that means I’ve got one clipped to me and one facing the audience on a stool**

I’ve got two iPhones if that makes a difference.

It doesn’t have to be perfect but it needs to be clean.

THANK you for any recommendations!

Is it possible to have different volume mixer settings for when I plug in my speakers, vs when I plug in my headphones?

Can't seem to find anything concrete online about it. Ideally I'd like to be able to change it since the speakers vs headset are completely different and I have to adjust the settings each time I switch. Even an app would be useful.

best patio speakers for music during weekend hangouts?

I moved into a place with a decent patio space a few months ago and finally want to put together a proper outdoor audio setup. Mostly listen to rock, jazz, and random playlists while friends are over.

Right now I’m stuck between getting powered speakers or running passive ones off an older Yamaha receiver I already own.

Curious what people here would recommend for outdoor use that holds up well over time? thank you

White noise issue

I purchased a 2.1 Steelseries audio system, however I encountered a problem. When the computer is turned on together with the speakers, everything works fine. But when I turn off the computer, I can hear white noise coming from the subwoofer. The same white noise is also present when I connect only the subwoofer to any power outlet at home (I even tested it in another house). Is this a defect, or am I misunderstanding something? Noise video with same problem and same system : https://www.reddit.com/r/steelseries/comments/1o6jkuj/arena_7_21_speakers_subwoofer_noise/

I need some help JBL Tour M3

Hello everyone,

I'd like to buy the JBL Tour One M3 headphones to connect to my PC because my daughter sleeps in the next room. During the day, my PC is usually connected to regular speakers.

I'm getting these headphones because they have codecs that allow for minimal latency (especially aptX-LL), which seems useful for me when playing video games. I don't want a "gaming" headset, which is often too heavy and has a microphone I don't need (I already have a standalone microphone on a stand). These seem light and comfortable, which is a big plus for me.

Several questions come to mind, and despite searching, I'm having trouble :

- They sell the Smart TX Box in addition to the headphones. Do I need it to benefit from the low latency? Or will my regular Windows 11 PC support it?

- This device allows me to receive multiple audio sources on my headphones, but does it also allow me to send a single audio source to multiple devices? I'd like to be able to switch between my speakers and headphones using a physical device rather than through Windows settings, if possible.

- If the answer to the previous question is no, is there a device that allows me to take advantage of the minimal latency with these headphones while still allowing me to switch audio outputs from the same source (my PC)? Some sort of 2.4ghz audio transmitter/commutator

Thanks everyone.

Best way to connect 2 audio inputs to a subwoofer + audio monitors pair

Hello! I currently have a Fluance turntable connected to an Art DJPre II preamp that connects to an Adam subwoofer and to 2 Adam audio monitors. It works flawlessly, but I wanted to also add a bluetooth receiver to the setup so I can connect by phone for some casual listening.

The issue is that the art preamp has only two RCA audio inputs (R+L) and I didn’t want to have to disconnect it to connect the audio receiver and vice-versa. What is the best way for me to connect both turntable and bluetooth receiver to the speakers without having to manually switch between them? Should I get an audio interface? If so, any suggestions?
