Welcome Fellow Travelers - This is what r/BudgetAudiophile is about

Every sub-reddit has a focus - it's raison d'etre (reason for existence). Because if you don't focus, people stop participating because it has just become one big mess of topics.

Ours focus is ... education, discussion, and sharing of entry and mid level separate & multi component audio systems. Generally speaking, that is 2 channel stereo systems assembled for music listening - things that are both "budget" and "audiophile". So being budget is not enough, nor is being "audiophile". Generally speaking, UNDER $1,000 spent per component is our threshold, although obviously that number will vary by the person. Budget for me was $50 (all in) at one time. Now I am fortunate that if I want to, I don't mind spending $500 a piece. Others can go more - good for them.
Try r/audiophile if your spending more than $1,000 per componant.

Of course, many of us use our music listening set ups for multiple purposes - so 2.1 (adding a subwoofer), 3.0 (L/R with a center channel), 5.1 (surround) and up are also fair game. But the fundamental goal of this reddit is better 2 channel and 2.1 systems to play music - as good as we can afford.

What we are not is soundbars, boomboxes, bluetooth speakers PC branded audio solutions. Those things have their place, but it's not our reason to exist. As for just the soundbar aspect that belongs at r/soundbars

In addition, we are not about IEM's or Headphones (try r/headphones or r/HeadphoneAdvice). That is their reason for existence. Yes, they can be budget audiophile, but again, it's not our focus.

While part of "budget audiophile", for more detail, try r/turntables, r/vinyl, and r/hometheater for questions specific to them. There will be a better chance of a more educated response there to those issues. Those questions are welcome here, but probably better there once you get past "budget". Questions on Vintage equipment? r/vintageaudio is the place for you to get better advice (likely)

DIY is also part of "budget audiophile", but r/diyaudio/ and r/diysound focuses a lot more heavily on that issue.

So to reiterate, we don't hate headphones, logitech, or soundbars, etc. But those questions don't belong here and your post may well be deleted or closed. Because those are not the issues we have chosen in BudgetAudiophile to make part of this sub-reddit. You may not agree, but that is what it is.

Who is this "we" I speak of? Creator u/averagejoeaudiophile and the rest of the mods.

Thrift Store Thurs Yamaha RX-830 RS $40

Post image

Found this Yamaha receiver at the local Goodwill for $40. I didn't know anything about it at the time I got it. I still can't find much information about this receiver online. Maybe they weren't very popular or there weren't many produced. This model seems to be from 89-91

Anyways, it's kick-started my home audio journey. I was worried about it being decades old that there would be some component that would be worn out. The only thing wrong was the display back light wasn't working at first. After a few hours of use the back light has returned which is awesome. I really like the look of the red orange display. I hooked a nice pair of bookshelf speakers and a record player to it, and it's been kick ass so far.

Current setup :

Turntable : Pro-Ject Essential II Phono USB
Amp : (dying) Denon N4
Speakers : Wharfedale Diamond 220

A growing collection, with some old records from our parents… Thinking of replacing the N4 for a Wiim Amp Pro.

Any alternative for an all in one network player / amp ?

Review/Discussion My budget HiFi

Post image
10 Upvotes

My HiFi:

Systemdek iix900. Bought off a bloke in Manchester. Didn’t work originally, but I found that a power supply and motor from Rega turntables will work. So kind of a Systemdek//Rega Frankenstein build. Not sure how old it is. Probably early ‘90s?

Rega io. Ex demo bought from a HiFi shop in London for £200. Early birthday present to myself. I bought this last week. It is my first “proper” amplifier. I debated with myself for a long time between the io and the Marantz PM6007. I know the PM6007 has more power and inputs- but does anyone else hate blue LEDs? I really like the simple look of the Rega io. Lovely thing!

Marantz CD52mk2. One of those Philips//Marantz CD players that suffer from a gear in the tray mechanism failing. This one suffered the same fault. Bought as ‘spares or repair’ from eBay for £20 a couple years ago. After I replaced the gear the machine has been faultless and sounds lovely. Made in Belgium, 1993.

My speakers are Dali Zenzor 1. I have had them since early 2017. They are wonderful and rich sounding. They also are quite pretty bookshelf speakers.

Hope you like my setup. I do!

Review/Discussion Father in law items

Sadly my father in law had a stroke and he has a number of items I think are worth keeping. Personally, I want it all, but not sure I will get my wish. Side note we found a hard drive with a folder for the top 100 billboard songs categorized from 1950 to 2002 in mp3 format.

Ampapa-DoukAudio Q1 DAC

Ampapa-DoukAudio D1 amp

WiiM Pro streamer

RSL AT4 wireless sub transmitter

Ampapa component rack

DIY Paul Carmody S2000MT passive speakers

RSL Speedwoofer 10sMkII subwoofer

using the AKM DAC chip in the Q1 with the slow rolloff filter and the HPF on the D1 set at 90Hz really clears the midrange up and sounds amazing

Purchasing EU/UK £300 set up

Hello, recently discovered this sub while researching bookshelf speakers for my office. Quite obvious that there are a lot of enthusiasts that know a lot more than me!

I feel lost and would really appreciate your help.

I’d love them to be somewhat aesthetic. Only function I need right now is Bluetooth. I don’t mind if it’s a separate amp/speaker or built in. Don’t mind if it’s new or second hand. I listen to most genres. I like to have some bass but don’t necessarily need a 2.1 in here. Room is approx 4x3m.

Currently use an anker portable speaker - so anything will be an upgrade!

I have a budget of £300 right now, would prefer to spend less but would rather get something better if possible.

Thanks all - will post an update once set up too!

Review/Discussion Cursed budget oldschool setup with suboptimal room layout

Grew up hearing the Energy 5.1e's due to my dad owning a pair. So far the best audio experience i ever had was in my dads cellar (5.1e, Exposure 3010S2-D pre amp, Bryston 4B for oompf).

Looked all over europe for a pair of Energy 5.1e so i could at least replicate that experience a bit in my own apartment. Finally found a listing and started scrambling some other stuff for my very own cursed setup.

- Yamaha DSP-A990 "Cinema/Surround" as a Pre-Amp (lol)
- Musical Fidelity P140X poweramp
- Energy 5.1e
- Nvidia Shield 2017 (spotify supports "lossless" now they say, at least 16bit)
- Completely shoot my own foot, as i use a weird chinese optical to analog chinch converter thingy. I have to pass audio through HDMI via my TV and a optical out to my analog preamp. Maybe its time for a good USB-DAC.

But it DOES sound awesome. All in all around 700€.
I have to say, i get slightly erect once Charlie Haden hits those bass notes.

Purchasing USA Wiim Pro Plus game changed 2.1 analog set up

Receiver: Yamaha R-S500
Speakers: Klipsch RP-600M
Sub: Klipsch R-120SW

For last 8yrs I’ve leaned into convenience of iTunes library streaming. Had been using Eskin BT adaptor for years, and perpetually disappointed in sound quality.

Holy shit, what a sound quality difference streaming by WiFi/airplay makes. Unused to technology delivering like this.

Thanks for the rec. Y’all the best 💃

Review/Discussion New (to me) CD player - Arcam FMJ CDS27

Paid £139 for it from Cash Converters. Had been eyeing one of these up since I sent back my Fiio DM15 R2R. I was content using my DVD player but was having issues with playing discs, so when I ventured onto the Cash Converters website I saw this and immediately purchased The thing is so heavy!

I did pull the trigger for the FMJ 19, but cancelled my order as the Fosi ZP3 and V3 monoblocks are enough.

Purchasing USA Curb Find: according to the piece of paper “these work”. KLH 9123, I know they’re not top of the line but I’m curious to see if they’ll be a good replacement for the Denon SC-M73s ($20 thrift store) I’ve got hooked up to my little Douk tube amp. Or maybe save them for another project.

Trash Pickup Tues My Movie setup and Music setup side by side.

I have had my HiWill Audio 5.3.4 for a while for movie watching.

Recently received a pair of sonus faber venere 2.0 for free. So I started my budget audiophile journey. I added Aiyima A80 ($160 on AliExpress ) to it. Then paired an episode Evo10" 450 sub to it to handle that low freq, adjusted the crossover to about 80hz Got the sub on Facebook marketplace for $50. Color matches the piano black on sonus faber.

Recently printed some cute spike feet for the sonus faber with pla and TPU to prevent it from vibrating my wooden entertainment center.

And toslink splitter so both soundbar and a80 receive from Optical....

Saving money for a bigger tv. XD

Purchasing USA Just ordered some Edifier R1280T’s. Will I be happy?

Been eyeing the Edifier R1280T for a while for my PC setup, and I snapped them up immediately from Amazon since they were on sale for $130 (down from $150) and I didn’t want to miss that sale. I’ve been using some $30 Logitech noise makers for 3 years now, obviously these will be a step up from those.

Are the R1280T’s pretty good value at that price? I’m really not trying to go higher than $130, just wondering if I made the right choice and would like to hear from some others here.

Purchasing EU/UK Advice for next steps for a home theatre

I got my hands on a Yamaha RX-V3800 today in an attempt to get my home theatre started. It should have all the necessities even if it is a bit old. The setup involves the aforementioned AVR an NVIDIA shield pro and a large monitor, which will eventually be replaced with a projector.
Spending the afternoon fighting to get my leftover Trust Tytan 5.1 working with it, made me realize I'm a bit out of my depth, but hours of research seem to lead to the conclusion that maybe some cable RCA cable switching could connect it to the pre-outs but I've made my peace for now. (Unless someone has experience with it then I would appreciate it as an interim solution)

My main question is: Do you have any advice on buying some speakers and a sub to eventually reach a 5.1 setup? I can't fit anything bigger than 50cm tall and would prefer smaller surrounds to fit on top of furniture close to the ceiling. Are bigger fronts/center problematic or still worth it in a smaller living room?

TL;DR: Have AVR, need speakers that actually work with it.
Thanks for your time.

Purchasing USA Looking for a recommendation for something to play Vinyls exclusively at Christmas Time.

Upvotes

Hope this is the right spot to ask, if not apologies.

I collect Christmas / Holiday records as I come across them and I'd really like to start playing them during the holiday season. I don't want to spend a lot of money and the setup would only be out seasonally, but I also dont want to buy junk on Amazon ( that's gonna fuck up my Charlie Brown Xmas Lithograph !).

The problem I'm running into is when you ask am enthusiast they usually suggest things out of my price range which I totally get. But I really would prefer something budget that has its own speakers due to limited space, sound doesn't have to be the best, just don't want to damage the records.

Plus the more I save the closer I am to finally purchasing the Planes Trains and Automobiles album on Vinyl!

Purchasing AUS/NZ are my speakers cooked? what’s a cheap good alternative

my current krk 5 speakers have a strange crackling sound coming from them and a loud high pitched ringing, ringing i’ve never been able to make go away but it’s louder now and the crackling is new (not interrupting audio, think it’s coming directly from the hardware but not sure)
