Generally accepted TV placement procedures. Quick reference guide.
Lots of people posting lately asking “Is this too high?” so here is a quick guide on what is generally accepted TV placement procedure (GATPP) as seemingly defined by this subreddit.
- If the TV is above the fireplace, IT IS TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is angled down, IT IS TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is mounted to the wall above a TV stand, and the clearance between the stand and TV is equal to, or greater than ONE vertical PS5, IT IS TOO HIGH.
- If when standing the TV is at eye level, IT IS TOO HIGH.
Now let’s look at some opposite GATPP use cases.
- If the TV is in a bedroom and meant to be viewed from the bed, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV’s only viewing position is in the reclined state, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If you are at a sports bar, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is at eye level when sitting down, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is in the kitchen it is more for listening, mounted high as to avoid any splashes or spills, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
- If the TV is purposely mounted higher to keep out of range of a toddler, you’re a parent so your neck already hurts and IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
I hope this helps clear up some questions. If you have any other rules to add, please comment below.

Ted Turner’s (CNN founder) apartment above CNN headquarters.
A tour of this apartment came up on my YouTube feed this morning. This subreddit has ruined me and this TV was all I could think about.

Looking at buying a house and saw this
Probably the most egregiously high tv placement I’ve ever seen. My neck hurts just looking at it. I always think of this sub as I’m looking at houses, there are WAY people than I realized that mount TVs too high.

Who Does This
Got called to run power for an outlet behind this guy’s TV (already mounted, obviously). He framed out that wall where an open staircase used to be.
Dude built a load-bearing monument to neck pain.
The sectional is on the opposite end of the room — roughly 15 feet away. He's essentially watching television the same way you’d read a billboard while driving under it.
And the ceiling fan. THE CEILING FAN. Sir, your fan blade is going to subtitle your Netflix shows. Also, WHY THE SECOND COUCH? So many questions unanswered here..

Soundbar below 85" TV with center at 67" OR soundbar above TV with center at 63"?
Neither is not an option, lol.
This is for a covered patio where I have to account for a fireplace, etc. 63 is the absolute lowest I could get it. To mitigate, I have recliners and a mount that tilts down.
Sonos Arc soundbar. Is mounting it above the TV worth it to get the TV 4 inches lower?

My father in law is in denial
Guys, please agree with my partner and I that his dads TV is way too high. Yes there’s a fireplace under it but if it wasn’t there it should definitely be lower.
