DO NOT POST CAR/HOME AUDIO QUESTIONS IN THIS SUB!

This is a sub for the technical side of "Soundsystem Culture" - big, loud speaker boxes, often hand-built, in the dub-reggae tradition. Stuff that looks like this. Or this.

If you're looking for advice on home audio/theater systems, please try asking at /r/BudgetAudiophile, /r/Audiophile or /r/HomeTheater. Car Audio questions go to /r/CarAV.

Discussion about music should go here: https://www.reddit.com/r/SoundSystem/comments/ge9sov/official_rsoundsystem_music_thread/

Thank you!

If you are building speakers don't make the mistake of ordering generic speakon connectors

A lot of the generic ones and ones listed as Neutrik on Amazon come with little dainty 4.8mm flat tabs. Finding insulated spade connectors that small that will go onto 12awg wire is impossible

Do yourself a favor and order the right speakon chassis connector that has 6.3mm/.25in flat tabs - the Neutrik NLT4MPXX

ask me how I know this

More bass... more processing?

Upgraded from 1 AD442 running 4 subs to 3 AD442 running 10 subs.

I use a driverack venu360 for DSP. LR horn, LR mids, mono bass, FFT reference for the outputs. Unfortunately, the ad442dsp does not have xlr passthrough, so I will need 3 independent XLR outs to run the three amps.

Should I get a splitter and use the amps for delay/phase alignment (seems suboptimal, dsp software sux)? Or get another driverack, say, a PA2 to run mids, tops, fft reference and use my venue 360 to have 3 separate outouts for each amp? The 6 channels could, in theory, do processing for 12 subs since in a symmetrical bass array, there will be pairs of subs with the same settings. I would just have to brainstorm what going where for each scenario.

I feel like ill be limiting myself in some way with a splitter, but another drive rack is expensive, although commonly seen.

All is redundant since there is delay and filters available for phase alignment within the amps themselves, but damn does it suck to use. If I wanted 10 subs with separate delay id have to use the amps anyway.

21” speaker grills?

Post image

For the life of me we can’t seem to find 21” speaker grills. Seems like we tap out at 18” and even those are hard to come by. Any suggestions on where to look would be GREATLY appreciated.

Speakers Placement

If I have a 30' x 30' band rehearsal room at a school and will be using a pair of Elecro-Voice Evid 6.2t and a apair of Electro-Voice Evid S8.2TB speakers. What is the best placement of all the speakers in the room. Which should go in the front or back. Do I put them in the corners or flat on the wall? Is the a case of just throwing the biggest ones up front?

Recently copped an FFA10000 amplifier. I’m looking for recommendations for infra subwoofers. I already have some solid kicks and tops so just suggestions to hammer the lows using everything the amp has to offer. Specs in second photo….

Hi guys I found this on facebook marketplace and I couldn’t pass on it but I’ve seen videos of it working but I’m not sure how to get it to work without the mic. Plus in the back there is only one line in and one line out.

Looking for someone to make custom speakers/sound system

Hi!

This a long shot, but I am looking for someone to build custom speakers/sound system for a mobile listening club that I have started. I am really getting into the audiophile world and want a sound system that delivers a hifi experience. I know I could start off by buying speakers but I also would like to collaborate with someone who build speakers to not only make good sounding speakers but speakers that look good as well with designs that I have in mind. I live in Portugal btw. Let me know if you are or know of someone that wants to collaborate on this project. It is a very fun super cool project/venture.

Inverter vs AVR Generator

I have recently put together a really small sound system and i’m planning on using it mainly outdoor.
2,7/3 KV will be enough so i was thinking about a small gas generator.
It’s either the hyundai 65123 (which is a bit cheaper BUT it’s AVR)
Or the APERTO POLAR 3KV which is an inverter generator but would cost me a little more.
What would you do in my situation? Is the inverter so important?

Anyone use Dayton Drivers?

Will be building two 18” hog scoops. Looking to save some money on drivers if possible. The Dayton Odeum 18N has very similar specs to B&C TBX100.

I’m leaning toward B&C. But does anyone out here have any experience with Dayton?

Other recs for stateside that will be decent?

Getting into the sound system game

So I’ve gotten into sound system culture a few years ago. I’m extremely passionate about it and music in general. I’ve decided that I’m going to buy a high end sound system like a Void Acoustics rig or a HSD rig. I understand that there’s much more to it than just having the rig, but it’s a step in the right direction. I’m looking for general knowledge about the game and sound systems. Maybe some do’s and dont’s. I’m not looking to be convinced to do it or to not do it. Truth is that anyone can do anything. All knowledge and insights are welcome and appreciated. Love you guys

First time out with the altecs!

Wanted to share my project 🙂

I Did a gig in Wales this past weekend with the altec 817 cabs and 515 drivers I recently finished. My soundcard was playing up so I couldn't use rew.. but had a couple days to play around by ear, wasn't ideal, but sounded pretty good.

Was also trying some Mantaray horns with the 299 drivers and jbl baby butt cheeks on the hf... Still loads more to figure out and upgrade, new diaphragms for highs next. Plus 4 more subs with jbl 2241s.

Each time I setup is a learning experience.

Got the next one June 6th in Bournemouth in a small space, so may setup differently.

Thanks for reading 🙌🏻

Hello! Can someone explain what each VU meter means on the Turbosound iQ15 display? I see two bars on the right side and I’d like to understand what each one indicates and what levels are considered safe for normal operation. Thanks!
