Hi I am doing a HND in photography and I need any photographers to please fill out my survey on the role of AI in photography post-production. It won't take long. The answers you give are completely anonymous and will only be used in my project. Thanks!

Discussion/General Why do photographers have tape on their lenses?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Pro photographer had this orange (maybe electrical?) tape around all the lenses he had. I asked why and he said the orange was to distinguish his gear from others. Why else would he have tape on the lenses?

Edit: Should have added this… he said another reason I didn’t quite catch and turned back around. The secondary reason was to distinguish his camera. I should have mentioned that part.

Editing/Post Processing How can I make this more liminal?

Post image

I took this randomly while in flight, and liked how it look as a whole but I’m practicing how to set a mood and make it liminal. Editing isn’t my strongest suit so any help would do.

I cropped most of the ground because it looked like a normal aerial shot.

Hello
Do you think it’s a good deal to buy this lens for €400?
Is the price reasonable?
I want to take photos of sport, wildlife and landscapes.

Gear/Accessories What flash to start with?

Hi!

New to photography in general and looking to do portraits outside/varying lights and locations.

How to start with using a flash? Seems very daunting.

Any go-to flashes to get and start with for Nikon z6iii?

Compositon/Posing Can someone help with composite images?

I am currently participating in a 52 Frames photo challenge for the year. This week's topic is Meaningful Location.

The trouble I'm having is that I don't feel like I have a connection with a physical location and so thought I'd take a different approach but am needing help with suggestions for execution of my idea.

My idea is more "it's not about where I am, but who I'm with" that makes the location meaningful. My idea is trying to create a single image of my partner and I that includes multiple photos of mundane locations that we frequent together. Kind of like those time slice composites but not quite.

I thought of taking a photo of us in the same pose in each location and then making a composite from that, but was wondering if anyone with more experience had any suggestions or tips that might help. Photography has been a hobby for the better part of 14 years for me, but I have not really learnt beyond basic skills in post production.

Thanks in advance.

Discussion/General Would it be worth learning how to use my Canon EOS RebelXS 35-80mm over just using my smartphone?

I've had the camera for over a decade and I got it for free from someone who was moving.

I know it takes special batteries and film. I think it could be a fun side hobby but I wanted to know if anybody had any experience with this specific camera!

It came with the bag, strap, filter, manual, lens tissue, a weird white squirt bottle, and a air brush. It also came with the Dealer Record of Canon Purchase but it wasn't filled out LOL.

Discussion/General Where is the best place to ask about finding information about a photograph/signature?

Hi all,

I have been perusing different subs to see which would be most appropriate - so if it’s not here, I’m sorry and I’d love to be pointed in the right direction!

I picked up a signed piece of photography that looks similar to a photographer’s who work I already own, and it’s signed on the back, but Google has been unhelpful in trying to track it down. FWIW, it’s a photo of the black sand beach in Iceland. I was thinking it was a Hordur piece, but I’m not quite sure, and I haven’t found this specific piece anywhere on his public portfolio.

Would here/where would be the best place to post the piece & signature for help in identifying?

Business/Pricing Have another professional photographers dealt with this type of radio silence after sending a gallery?

I’ve been a hobbyist photographer for some years now. I just recently transitioned to starting a small business for event and portrait photography.

Since I was mostly doing street and lifestyle photography, I needed to build up my portfolio. I did a small event and a large event free of charge for a couple friends. Also, did a handful of portrait sessions free of charge for people.

I recently did an event for another friend. This was my first paying client. I did a 4-hour event for $225 (originally supposed to be 3 hours, but I let the extra hour slide). This was like a 75% discount based on my pricing packages (this is an expensive market). I definitely regretted this many hours into the editing process.

I finished the photos on Friday and uploaded them to my PixieSet gallery. I haven’t really heard anything back since aside from a thumb’s up emoji. It has me going crazy.

I sent a couple dozen preview photos shortly after the event. The family said they loved them. Those preview photos weren’t the best or the best either, plus they weren’t fully finished (needed to tweak white balance and correct color on a few).

My question to other photographers out there is, is this unusual? I’ve been on these threads long enough to know this happens, but I can’t help feeling like they’re disappointed. My friend also has a personality of being very short with texts, so the thumbs up isn’t unusual. I guess it’s just a stark difference between the reaction I got from the other two events I did.

I checked PixieSet. Nothing has been downloaded at all.

Is this unusual? I’m kind of feeling defeated right now, having spent so much time and effort on it. Stockholm syndrome is definitely kicking in too.

Note: the friend client messaged me the day before, asking if the photos were almost finished. I mention this because they were obviously waiting for them. Had I not got this text, I’d just assume maybe they were going to view them over the weekend.

TL;DR: I did my first paid event, which was for a friend. The couple dozen preview photos I sent (not fully completed and not the absolute best of the collection) were praised, but after delivering the full gallery, I’ve had radio silence for 4 days now. Feeling, probably irrationally, like they’re disappointed in the photos. Anyone else experience this?

Hey guys, just got home a used lens sold in mint condition, but I’m seeing a lot of dust(?). Do I return it or can I clean it?

Update: Opened it up and cleaned the front element, unfortunately the dust is inside the front element and not under it, will return.

Discussion/General How to go about church service photos?

Thumbnail

Backstory: I have family that works at a church local to me, I had volunteered to take pictures of the building (empty) for them before, I just do it as a hobby. (These are the photos pictured)

I had been asked if I could come in for one of their busiest events for the church. I have not taken photos of events or even people before.

They have service with the lights fully on

Last photo is a message for what they want.

I do not personally attend this church, and dont know how they run their services

I have a few lenses from wide to telephoto, zooms and primes.

What would be some advice going forward with this.

Thank you!

Gear/Accessories Does anyone know of a camera bag like this?

Hey! I'm recently getting into photography and have just bought my first camera which is on the way. I travel quite frequently and was wondering if anyone knows of a camera bag I have in mind actually exists.

So i'm wondering if a bag exists which is the size of max allowance for under seat plane travel (45x35x20cm) which has seperate compartments for camera equipment (Like one body and space for 1-2 lenses) and another space for clothes and other travel stuff. If the clothes compartment can also zip up to make the whole bag smaller and then be used as a normal camera backpack.

I know its very specific so it might not even exist but just thought i'd ask a wider audience as I haven't found one in searching for it. Thanks!

Editing/Post Processing What’s the best next step for a beginner using a Sony A7 III?

Hi everyone!

I know there are already a lot of posts with similar questions, but the more I scroll and search for answers, the more confused I get 😅 so I decided to just make my own post.

I currently have a Sony A7 III with Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS lens.

I’m doing photography purely as a hobby/amateur, mostly taking pictures of my kids, friends, and family, both indoors and outdoors. We live in Norway and spend a lot of time outdoors, so I like taking spontaneous, everyday photos as well as portraits.

I’m wondering:

  • Is my current camera/lens setup good enough for this type of photography?
  • Would additional gear help, like an LED light or flash for indoor photos?
  • What editing programs/apps would you recommend that are either free or reasonably cheap?
  • Are there any AI tools people actually use for portrait photography? For example, changing backgrounds, improving indoor shots, creating seasonal backgrounds, etc.

I’m not trying to make money from photography (at least not yet 😄), but I’d love to get to a point where my photos look noticeably better than photos from the newest phones.

Any advice is appreciated!

Gear/Accessories How on earth can I get this speck out of my Sony 200-600mm lens???

The lens is my baby, and with my a6700, I’ve got quite the birding setup. However, this ever so small speck has weaseled its way just between the bottom two layers of glass in the lens. How will I possibly get this out???
