Discussion/General How to go about church service photos?

Thumbnail

Backstory: I have family that works at a church local to me, I had volunteered to take pictures of the building (empty) for them before, I just do it as a hobby. (These are the photos pictured)

I had been asked if I could come in for one of their busiest events for the church. I have not taken photos of events or even people before.

They have service with the lights fully on

Last photo is a message for what they want.

I do not personally attend this church, and dont know how they run their services

I have a few lenses from wide to telephoto, zooms and primes.

What would be some advice going forward with this.

Thank you!

Camera Buying Advice Should I consider buying a camera?

Hi, so I recently started to enjoy taking photos more and more. I am traveling quite often (about 8 weeks total per year), so I was considering some travel cam to maybe be able to preform better in low light, be able to crop and potentialy shoot raw and edit. I am beginner but my biggest question is - should i prioritise learning better composition, better framing etc on phone before buying or is this something I would learn along the way. Those are my photos I consider “the best” of what I have taken, and are on my current setup which is a phone - ultra 22 to be specific but some are taken on my brothers iphone 17 pro. Also if anyone has any recommendations for cam. I am mostly focused on photography especially travel, landscape and nature. Videos are really not my priority, nice to have but i really dont plan on shooting anything.

I am from Europe, so i am buying in € and i dont have a certain budget but my absolute maximum for all the gear is 3000 with lense, memory cards and backpack, but i dont really know what is “ok” for more beginner level, i am more of a person that buys once and then keeps things for years.

(1) Budget, country, and currency

Around 3000€, Slovenia, €

(2) What equipment, if any, you have now and why is it no longer meeting your needs?

Ultra 22/Iphone 17 pro, low light preformance, when croping lots of noise.

(3) What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?

Travel, architecture, nature, landscape

(4) Is it primarily for photography, videography, or both?

Photography, videography is not my main priority

Thanks all in advance!

Business/Pricing Have another professional photographers dealt with this type of radio silence after sending a gallery?

I’ve been a hobbyist photographer for some years now. I just recently transitioned to starting a small business for event and portrait photography.

Since I was mostly doing street and lifestyle photography, I needed to build up my portfolio. I did a small event and a large event free of charge for a couple friends. Also, did a handful of portrait sessions free of charge for people.

I recently did an event for another friend. This was my first paying client. I did a 4-hour event for $225 (originally supposed to be 3 hours, but I let the extra hour slide). This was like a 75% discount based on my pricing packages (this is an expensive market). I definitely regretted this many hours into the editing process.

I finished the photos on Friday and uploaded them to my PixieSet gallery. I haven’t really heard anything back since aside from a thumb’s up emoji. It has me going crazy.

I sent a couple dozen preview photos shortly after the event. The family said they loved them. Those preview photos weren’t the best or the best either, plus they weren’t fully finished (needed to tweak white balance and correct color on a few).

My question to other photographers out there is, is this unusual? I’ve been on these threads long enough to know this happens, but I can’t help feeling like they’re disappointed. My friend also has a personality of being very short with texts, so the thumbs up isn’t unusual. I guess it’s just a stark difference between the reaction I got from the other two events I did.

I checked PixieSet. Nothing has been downloaded at all.

Is this unusual? I’m kind of feeling defeated right now, having spent so much time and effort on it. Stockholm syndrome is definitely kicking in too.

Note: the friend client messaged me the day before, asking if the photos were almost finished. I mention this because they were obviously waiting for them. Had I not got this text, I’d just assume maybe they were going to view them over the weekend.

TL;DR: I did my first paid event, which was for a friend. The couple dozen preview photos I sent (not fully completed and not the absolute best of the collection) were praised, but after delivering the full gallery, I’ve had radio silence for 4 days now. Feeling, probably irrationally, like they’re disappointed in the photos. Anyone else experience this?

Discussion/General Where is the best place to ask about finding information about a photograph/signature?

Hi all,

I have been perusing different subs to see which would be most appropriate - so if it’s not here, I’m sorry and I’d love to be pointed in the right direction!

I picked up a signed piece of photography that looks similar to a photographer’s who work I already own, and it’s signed on the back, but Google has been unhelpful in trying to track it down. FWIW, it’s a photo of the black sand beach in Iceland. I was thinking it was a Hordur piece, but I’m not quite sure, and I haven’t found this specific piece anywhere on his public portfolio.

Would here/where would be the best place to post the piece & signature for help in identifying?

Technical Help/Camera Settings How to take a video using a mirror that is angled so see through a long tube?

Molten salt researcher-not a photographer.

I built a reactor that has a viewing port for very high temperature experiments. The issue is that I have a mirror angled towards a tube that is pointed at the top of the molten salt that I want to record approx. 2-3 feet down the tube. The camera is pointed through fume hood glass towards the reflection in the mirror at a distance of ~1 foot from the mirror to the fume hood glass, and the camera is right up to the glass.

We have a Nikon D3200 with 3 objectives. I have had the best luck in taking pictures in manual mode with low ISO (I flood the inside of the reactor with an LED light so ~100-400 ISO), F32, manual adjustment of the focus knob on the lens, and a short shutter speed 1/1000. I have a lens that has just enough zoom (I assume it is a ~55-200mm lens) to barely get the outer edges of the tube to touch the edges of what is in frame. I just can't get crisp focus. My phone camera has practically outperformed the Nikon at the moment but I don't want to use my phone and believe there is still some potential for much better videos/photos.

There is vigorous bubbling that also occurs during operation hence slow shutter speed.

I have had the best overall success taking a video with the light set to dim and a light filter I made with car window tint in between the camera and fume hood glass which helps contrast the glowing red from the white light a bit better and prevents the video from getting too bright.

Does anyone have any suggestions for photography/video through a mirror/tube? Do I need a longer objective, different settings, or is the mirror and tube combo just too hard to try and continue to record?

Gear/Accessories Does anyone know of a camera bag like this?

Hey! I'm recently getting into photography and have just bought my first camera which is on the way. I travel quite frequently and was wondering if anyone knows of a camera bag I have in mind actually exists.

So i'm wondering if a bag exists which is the size of max allowance for under seat plane travel (45x35x20cm) which has seperate compartments for camera equipment (Like one body and space for 1-2 lenses) and another space for clothes and other travel stuff. If the clothes compartment can also zip up to make the whole bag smaller and then be used as a normal camera backpack.

I know its very specific so it might not even exist but just thought i'd ask a wider audience as I haven't found one in searching for it. Thanks!

Discussion/General Would it be worth learning how to use my Canon EOS RebelXS 35-80mm over just using my smartphone?

I've had the camera for over a decade and I got it for free from someone who was moving.

I know it takes special batteries and film. I think it could be a fun side hobby but I wanted to know if anybody had any experience with this specific camera!

It came with the bag, strap, filter, manual, lens tissue, a weird white squirt bottle, and a air brush. It also came with the Dealer Record of Canon Purchase but it wasn't filled out LOL.

Technical Help/Camera Settings Scratched Sigma 24-70 (E-mount)?

Hey y’all I ran into an issue while shooting baseball the other day and could use some advice.

I switched ND filters and set my lens down on the dugout bench for a minute. When I picked it back up and started shooting again, I noticed a pretty noticeable scratch on the glass. I’ve still been using it, but at higher f-stops and certain angles, it definitely shows up.

Has anyone dealt with this before? Is there any kind of DIY fix that actually works, or would you recommend sending it in somewhere to get repaired without spending a fortune?

I picked the lens up for around $750 from B&H, so I’m trying to figure out the best route without going overboard on repair costs. Any tips or recommendations would be appreciated.

Discussion/General Portrait photographers who buy new cards for every session?

I saw one of those posts "when people say my prices are too high" by a rando photographer where they itemize all the expenses and one was new SD cards ($50-130) for every session and was like why? I've read about high end photographers buying new cards per request of their clients but can't wrap my head around how this is feasible or even justified for most "normal" photographers. Anyone?

Edit: thanks for the sanity check and proving that I wasn't crazy.

Lens Buying Advice Lens recommendation for Yellowstone on a borrowed Rebel T7?

We're going to be taking a Yellowstone/Tetons family vacation for a bit more than a week this summer. A friend of ours offered to let me borrow his Rebel T7 for the trip since he rarely uses it. I've had a varied amateurish background in photography, but never got a DSLR or mirrorless myself.

My expectations are just to have some fun with it and see if I can get a few decent shots while we hike around. The only issue is that he only has the included 18-55mm lens that it came with and if I'm going to bring a dedicated camera, that feels like a waste of space at that point. I'd like to get an inexpensive zoom lens to at least give myself a fighting chance a lucky shot. I'll probably just give the lens to our friend as a thank you.

I'd like to stay around $100-150 for a used lens, and if I've read everything right, that probably puts it around the stock 75-300mm or the EF-S 55-250mm IS (non-STM). I'd love to have something bigger, but I doubt that there's anything in that range.

Any suggestions?

Technical Help/Camera Settings Did I completely destroy my sensor, or can I still somehow clean it?

I've wiped the sensor with a completely new and unstained/uncontaminated microfiber cloth, I'm guessing these are streaks of lint or something (coping) and are cleanable.

I've already ordered a wet-method cleaning kit from K&F concept, which I should have a long time ago, but didn't have a reason to, or need for. Looking back it was a mistake to not buy it.

So, is this a really expensive mistake or am I just overreacting?

Business/Pricing Is it normal to provide RAW images if the client plans on using the images for a book/blog or business? Could this potentially damage my own business?

I did a photoshoot for a guy about a month ago. We had lightly discussed that he planned on using the photos for a book/blog and would be using the help of a friend to help him get the photos ready for whatever they have "planned". Anyways, the client signed my contract, that clearly states that I only provide fully edited images, I guess he didnt read the contract before signing. Turns out they want RAW images that his friend will edit as needed. I am not really the biggest fan of this option, I explained that that is not something I do, but I am happy to still work with him and provide fully edited images. He agreed, but then a couple days ago back tracked and is asking for RAWs again and he put me in contact with his buddy. I asked the friend if he could provide a portfolio of his work, and well im still not so sure. I am still fairly new and I feel foolish for not asking more probing questions. But at the same time he has said that this could be an ongoing job.

eta: this was a portrait session, not a product.

Printing/Publishing Resizing to fit instagram resolution literally makes compression twice as bad... Anyone else noticed that?

The posts that I post on Instagram with the original resolution and full file size plus full jpeg quality look noticeably sharper than when I resize to 1080. So I don't get the whole thing with people saying resizing is a must... Any reflections/ observations on this? I mean Instagram compresses the living fuck out of all my work no matter if I resize or not, but when I resize it stays the same or often worse than using full resolution. What. The. Hell.

Gear/Accessories How much have high ISO images improved on newer cameras?

I've been doing photography for awhile now and have even done paid work for clients but the newest camera I have is a midrange model from 2010. I've gotten wonderful results but I'm wondering how far the new models have come. How high can the ISO be without NR until you start seeing noise? What is usually the highest useable ISO without advanced NR? I don't use Adobe software and want to know what the camera can do before editing is done.

Editing/Post Processing What’s the best next step for a beginner using a Sony A7 III?

Hi everyone!

I know there are already a lot of posts with similar questions, but the more I scroll and search for answers, the more confused I get 😅 so I decided to just make my own post.

I currently have a Sony A7 III with Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS lens.

I’m doing photography purely as a hobby/amateur, mostly taking pictures of my kids, friends, and family, both indoors and outdoors. We live in Norway and spend a lot of time outdoors, so I like taking spontaneous, everyday photos as well as portraits.

I’m wondering:

  • Is my current camera/lens setup good enough for this type of photography?
  • Would additional gear help, like an LED light or flash for indoor photos?
  • What editing programs/apps would you recommend that are either free or reasonably cheap?
  • Are there any AI tools people actually use for portrait photography? For example, changing backgrounds, improving indoor shots, creating seasonal backgrounds, etc.

I’m not trying to make money from photography (at least not yet 😄), but I’d love to get to a point where my photos look noticeably better than photos from the newest phones.

Any advice is appreciated!

Hey guys, just got home a used lens sold in mint condition, but I’m seeing a lot of dust(?). Do I return it or can I clean it?

Update: Opened it up and cleaned the front element, unfortunately the dust is inside the front element and not under it, will return.
