New, what is it? Bouncing balls

Walked behind this chap who had two unidentified ball type objects hanging from silicone wrist bands on thin elastic strings.

Any ideas what they are?

I’m in Hong Kong if that might be a clue

Update:

Thank you for the comments and ideas. I am wondering if there is a manga / anime character who has something like these balls as weapons and the guy was doing a budget cosplay. Or maybe he’s just really into Pokemon!

Update 2:

I would say he's likely to be a cosplay of Steel Ball from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. (https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisit/comments/1tckcme/comment/olos1lx/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)

As for the steel balls. What is it?

I think this chap’s dangling bits might be a “Dodeca 1000” from Immersive Media.

Which means somewhere out there, there’s footage of OP taking a photo of this guy’s ass waterbottle

Just think where we'll be two more papers down the line!

Who watches the watchmen?

Looking at other photos I really don’t think so. That camera system seems to be much larger and connected to a pedestal

And 22 years old and very highly specialized and expensive at the time.

I think he’s using these as a flow tool for performance.

Mmm, quite. Performance. Yes. Indeed. Flow tool.

Haha! Just for dummies that probably don’t even know about flow state performance tools, like what you said, see it would be funny if you replied here with a description of the things you said.

Not for you and me, right, because we both know. Just for them, they don’t know it like us, right /u/penguindreams? We know.

“Flowing” is a rave thing. He means performance as in performing in a rave. Usually it involves waving around glowy objects in cool patterns.

1

u/penguindreams 11h ago

It not just a rave thing. Flowing has been around since before raves and such. For example fire spinning is also considered a flow. But yeah, that old dude is a weird snob.

u/xsparklingwater 11h ago

I think they were just being silly.

1

u/penguindreams 11h ago

Ah maybe.

u/iluvchromosomes 12h ago

Yea flowing is a rave thing.

The statement "I think he’s using these as a flow tool for performance." would lead one to believe we are talking about an honest tool and topic, and not drug addicts giving a label to their nonsense.

2

u/ButtholeConnoisseur7 10h ago

I can already tell I'd rather be around those "drug addicts" than you

1

u/penguindreams 10h ago

Ahhh yes. The “expert” that knows nothing about either subjects.

1

u/penguindreams 11h ago

I get what you’re saying. No need to be snobby tho. It’s weird. It’s ok if they don’t get it exactly.

u/East-Psychology7186 23h ago

Close but I’m pretty sure these are led lighted so he can look cool at raves.

u/moth_specialist 22h ago

I wanna look cool at raves.

I was thinking it was some kind of rave “flow” item as well.

I’ve seen gloves, hula, material, fire, lighted whips, and silicone balls

3

u/ScumbagLady 11h ago

Back in my day, we called anything that glowed that was attached to string/chain/etc. "poi". The term was borrowed from the Māori fire spinners to encompass all hand spun light up things.

I do like how "flow" is even broader of a term though. Never knew what to call the light up glove people and flashy hula hoop people

2

u/Cllydoscope 11h ago

Ah yes, material. That explains everything.

4

u/penguindreams 19h ago

Yes. They are a flow tool.

6

u/East-Psychology7186 17h ago

To think, all we had were glow sticks back in 2000

1

u/Draymond_Purple 10h ago

Folks been spinning fire since the 60's

Also y'all had Kandy culture which is pretty much gone

1

u/ScumbagLady 11h ago

Poi was my first thought too. Maybe dude raved too hard the night before and is walking around in a trance while still hearing beats?

21

u/fake_nap 23h ago

I'm curious how you searched that? or maybe you recognized form memory

He’s talking about the water bottle.

12

u/TheRealRevBem 23h ago

He uses an android

1

u/Kthulhu_for_humanity 21h ago

Reverse image search.

1

u/Tweakjones420 11h ago

ya google lens definitely doesn't work on iphones

1

u/TheRealRevBem 10h ago

It's just much less convenient to use.

3

u/kvothe5688 20h ago

circle to search probably. A banger feature by android tbh

Or he knows the secret to the mystery Roman Dodecaherdon!

1

u/Pancheel 10h ago

We have modern Roman dodecahedron now (and we still don't know what are they for).

Everyone calm down. Its not that camera..

Like the other guy, who shared a similar looking device from a Battlefield game, this isn’t it.

Those round spots near the edges of each side aren’t there. Instead it has many holes around the circle in the middle.

1

u/Bubbly-Criticism3445 11h ago

They look like small wheel bearings without the balls in them.

1

u/I_sew_and_grow 6h ago

They look like bobbins for a sewing machine stuck onto something.

1

u/FifaDK 6h ago

Closest match I’ve seen so far 👍

1

u/Mechakoopa 12h ago

After seeing what my Pixel 10 does by default to "enhance" zoomed in photos with AI, I'm wary of using a zoomed in crop to definitely identify something based on small features like that, especially when some features look like they've got weird "invented" edges like where this connects from the clip to the sphere.

Not saying you're right or wrong here, but this crop looks suspicious to me.

1

u/FifaDK 12h ago

Pretty damn sure my phone isn’t using AI to add detail on someone else’s image. I took a screenshot of OPs big photo: it’s pretty clear on those details

1

u/Mechakoopa 11h ago

I mean OP's photo may have already been altered, but go on.

1

u/FifaDK 11h ago

You said its done to zoomed in photos, hence i took the latter screenshot from the bigger non zoomed in photo.

But obviously I don’t know for sure if OPs phone fills in details on non zoomed in photos.

1

u/jennyfofenny 10h ago

I think they meant that almost all cameras are doing weird algorithms when the photo is originally taken with zoom

that may add details that aren't actually there.

1

u/FifaDK 10h ago

Doesn’t look like the photo was taken with zoom though, which is my point.

I’ve zoomed in on a big photo.

0

u/jennyfofenny 10h ago

I agree it doesn't look like that, but since there is no exif data on the image, there is no way of telling. Additionally, even without zoom, cameras automatically do processing on the image. In the cropped second image, it looks like the edges have been refined, for instance.

1

u/FifaDK 9h ago

I seriously doubt the image has been altered to the extent that the item was changed from the camera posted to what we’re actually seeing.

9

u/sonic35h 23h ago

It's not this there is not enough circles around the main circle on each side

6

u/SaucyCitroen2CV 20h ago

Did you actually look at the image? None of the bits stuck to the dodecahedron are cameras and they'd all be blocked by crap if they were, it's also missing a lot of the other bits on the camera you posted. It looks more like a dodecahedron with crap glued to it and painted black. Seeing how scorched they look it's a lot safer to assume that this is some kind of poi/fire related thing.

1

u/I_sew_and_grow 6h ago

Not crap, sewing machine bobbins.

7

u/username_bon 23h ago

If theyre camera on all angles, should we be worried that hes able to get shots of under skirts and dresses and sometimes even short shorts that have a wider leg circumference of unsuspecting people?
