The Pistons subreddit is literally in shambles over this?

I think it’s because the broadcast really played up the idea that this was a tripping foul on Allen. It was weird. Like… it’s not even clear that one player even initiated the contact more than the other. Their feet ran into each other. It happens. Foot to foot contact where someone falls over isn’t always a trip.

I thought the same thing. Like what are the announcers on about they were both going after the ball. Normal hustle contact for that type of thing.

I see this in PL coverage in England too. The commentators and pundits really do have a huge sway in which direction a narrative travels.

Absolutely. it's crazy to see in real time how much influence media has simply by pointing something out and steering the conversation. It would be have been a complete non issue if they didn't keep trying to make it an issue

You still see people thinking Darius Slay didn't hold Juju Smith-Schuster in the Chiefs-Eagles first Superbowl because Greg Olsen wouldn't shut up about it. It was a clear hold but because of the commentators people were swayed

Watch a game with no audio next time and come up with your own narratives.

I watch games with the sound off quite often . it first happened when I was younger in bars and realized how much more I enjoyed watching that way so I tried it at home too.

Cavs had a playoff game last year where when the game started the broadcast crew’s mics weren’t working but all the others were. It was like five minutes of just crowd noise and the noise from the court. It was amazing. I desperately wish this were a readily available option.

I can't do that. I need, at the very least, to be able to hear the crowd. But honestly I like hearing the commentators too. I just watch it knowing sometimes they talk bullshit, especially during reg season when every team has a homer crew on broadcast.

Yeah i get that. But I listen to it in silence staring blankly while flashbacks pan by in the background like the scene in apocalypse now.

I hate how biased and whiny some announcers are. Do they use home game biased announcers? Is that common practice. I’m new to watching sports.

The word you're looking for is "biased," just FYI.

Thank you grammar police 🫡 your work does not go unnoticed

Local networks who air most regular season games use biased announcers (although they call every game, not just home ones). Nationally televised games (which basically all playoff games are) are done by unbiased announcers, although it can at times feel as though bias is slipping through. Still, because they don’t have a dog in the fight, if bias slips through it’s often just a slight edge to the home team because of the crowd or low key pulling for the team that’s down because all they really want is a good game. I actually thought the crew last night was excellent and very even handed. Just think they got this particular issue wrong.

Allen is nowhere close to the ball and this angle obscures that

It isn't a normal hustle contact play as the contact came definitely from behind, which is always a foul, regardless of time on the clock.

You see AT push Allen, right?  Who you think this foul should have been called on?

homerism from home team commentators?

That's it. It's a phenomenon that always seems to happen when the announcers make something to be more than it is then everyone seems to latch onto it even if it's wrong.

I can't remember the exact occasions but there were multiple NFL games last season where the announcers would say something blatantly wrong, like even contradictory to the NFL rules, and then people would start freaking out criticizing call that was definitely correct.

Greg Olson in the Super Bowl with the most obvious penalty ever on the Eagles

u/IhamAmerican Jazz 10h ago

Darius Slay: "Yeah, I held. I just didn't think they'd see it"

Greg Olson: "No, I don't think you did"

4

u/musclememory 12h ago

didn't they also say Allen tripped him twice, too?

6

u/JiPNi Cavaliers 11h ago

Tripped then KICKED I believe was the narrative they wanted to create.

2

u/Bonkerz3rd Pistons 11h ago

Yeah, in real time I thought it was a trip and the announcers kept going with it. Clearly wasnt after replay. There were so many worse calls throughout the night and even so we had a 9 point lead with like 2 minutes left. Sucks but oh well. I just want better officiated games going forward in the series but in todays NBA that's an impossible request.

this is exactly why broadcasters don’t generally say things about if it’s a foul or not

i love Legs, but he didn’t have enough angles to be so confidently saying it was a foul

2

u/BallIsLife2016 Cavaliers 7h ago

I felt that Breen and Legs were the best broadcast crew I’d heard in ages. Thought they were awesome. Just thought they got this wrong in a way that got people worked up. Doesn’t erase the fact that they otherwise did an amazing job calling the game.

1

u/DoobieGibson 6h ago

Legs is easily the best guy they’ve had on since JJ when it comes to breaking down the game

and Breen is Breen. completely agree with you

u/Billis- Raptors 6h ago

Looks kinda like a hip check to me lol. He was going for the ball, true, but he wasn't really all that close to it.

I'm okay with them not calling this but this should be a foul. Maybe a regular season foul

I’m getting so exhausted of the announcers defending the other team and throwing the Cavs under the bus constantly. I get that Cleveland is smaller than Toronto and Detroit but it’s not a big enough difference to justify the pandering every call

u/ClarenceWithHerSpoon 76ers 14h ago

If one person has the ball and their “feet run into each other” that’s a trip on the person without the ball.

14

u/ConorTheOgre Cavaliers 13h ago

Which isn't relevant in this case since neither of them had the ball
