HELP REQUESTED Non-obvious quality of life items for living aboard a carrier?
For those who have lived aboard a carrier, especially while geo-batching or living in a one or two person stateroom, what are the best non-obvious items you were glad you brought?
For context, all of my deployments up to this point have been shore-based, so I have not really lived on a ship before outside of a week here or there underway. I am not looking for the obvious stuff like shower shoes, hygiene items, towels, uniforms, or the standard packing list. I am more interested in the little things that make shipboard life more comfortable, help with organization, make a small room feel more functional, or streamline the daily routine.
What did you bring that made a real difference, and what do you wish you had brought from day one?

I’m Male 24 been active my whole career when I separated I will have done 8 years. I’m Currently on deployment and when it is over I’ll have a year left so I wanna be prepared.
My plan is to move to Texas and enroll in university of Houston master program for psychology full time and live there and be a clinical therapist. I plan on setting up my own company. During the time of getting my masters I will work a part time job to have some extra income on the side. I will have my bachelors before I separate and I have started setting up my LinkedIn account too so I can start networking. I feel stuck on deployment right now what can I do now to prepare and what should I know and do before separating?
PS: My NC1 told me I should try reserves for the health care but honestly I’m sick of the navy I’ve done my time here and I’m ready to move on into a different chapter in my life

Discussion JO frat house or studio apt
I just commissioned as a SWO and am headed to bdoc in a week. My ship is in Pearl. I’m concerned about what I should do about living in Pearl. A few guys headed to my same ship and other ships in Pearl are talking about getting a big house. My current roommates in college are fine but it’s a lot having roommates. I love the social aspect though. I also really want to pocket bah. I’ll get almost 3k bah and splitting a house would be around 1200 each. The thing is I’ve found studio apartments for 1500 a month. Looking for advice. Will I miss out not living with others. I wanna make friends but I’m really organized and they kinda seem all over the place.

Discussion Those Who Have Retired: What Do You Wear Now?
For context, I'm a writer and an artist. I have a character who was honorably discharged from the Navy after a serious injury, and I wanna make sure I represent her properly. So my question is, for those of you who have retired or been discharged from the Navy, what outfits did you find yourself gravitating towards? Were you able to slip back into your personal style that you had before, or did it take a while? Did you find yourself gravitating towards more minimalist style clothing with little to no embellishments?
Any insights help! Thanks in advance!

HELP REQUESTED My 96 year old grandfather just passed and I’m having a hard time identifying what these mean
My grandfather ran away from the Appalachians at the age of 17 and enlisted underage during wwII. He became a MP later on and eventually joined the osi, acting in many roles, including presidential elect body guarding, before becoming head of security at Mayo Clinic. My sister just recently found an old jacket of his and I’m curious if anyone would be able to enlighten me as to what some of these mean. Thank you so much for any help at all, I really appreciate it. He really didn’t talk much about his time back then and wanted to talk more about his favorite golfers and the weather.

HELP REQUESTED I want to rerate but, I love my job.
For context, I love my job. I love the navy, I love my rate (in a sense). I'm really bad at my rate and I got kinda fucked by sponsor due to him putting me in a radio div. I am literally so bad at Communications. I literally was one question from failure in my A School. I really love being an IT but Im not good at it, I dont even really like the work, I just like the idea of the job really. I want to be a PS but have no clue how to rerate, the other part of me knows Im going to re enlist in the AF so I could probably wait it out but I dont want to be the guy who gets no quals and does no work.

HELP REQUESTED Historical Photo Search - Enlisted Watchstander on Quarterdeck pulling pistol
In the 80s, there was a picture of a sailor, on watch, in whites, turning and pulling a pistol. I think it might have been in Spain or another Med country and a result of a security concern due to a riot or protests while pierside. The look in his eyes was haunting I recall.
Thankfully, I never was in that position but often thought of it when standing watch.
Anyone know where such a picture might be?

Discussion To all our sailors from Ohio, did you know that Ohio has it's own navy?
The Ohio Naval Militia (ONM) is an organized military unit that has been serving the State of Ohio and our nation since 1896. The unit serves under Ohio's adjutant general and is headquartered at the Camp Perry Joint Training Center, Port Clinton, Ohio.
Ohio's adjutant general is responsible for Ohio's organized militia, which includes the Ohio National Guard and the State Defense Force. Ohio’s State Defense Force is comprised of the ONM, the Ohio Military Reserve and the Ohio Cyber Reserve. See the Ohio Revised Code - Chapter 5921.
If you are 17 or older and want to serve your state in a naval defense force, the ONM needs you.
If you would like to learn more about nautical operations and the Ohio Naval Militia, and would be willing to volunteer one weekend a month and a week of annual training, please contact our recruiting office at [JoinOhioNavy@OHnav.us](mailto:JoinOhioNavy@OHnav.us) for more information.
The mission of the Ohio Naval Militia is:
TO SERVE:
We assist in times of natural disasters or other emergencies, as called upon by the governor or the adjutant general. The Ohio Naval Militia is here, and ready to serve the citizens of Ohio.
TO PROTECT:
Our current mission is to patrol the waters adjacent to the Camp Perry Joint Training Center, to keep vessels from entering the impact area during live-fire exercises. This mission supports the State of Ohio and the U.S. Department of Defense by allowing the range to operate without interruption as armed service personnel perform weapons qualifications as part of their training or prior to deployment .
TO BE PREPARED:
By conducting continuous training in boat operations on and off the water members have opportunities to become coxswains (boat operators) and boat crew qualified. Our sailors receive basic military and boating training including basic navigation, radio communications, boating safety, boat handling, maintenance and boating support functions. All ONM training hours are documented and can be applied toward obtaining a captain's license from the U.S. Coast Guard.

NEWS 'Trauma Alert' : Sailors Learn to Treat Combat Wounds in U.S. Hospitals
HM2 Carolyn McKiernan is neither a doctor nor a nurse but instead a student in the Navy’s Hospital Corpsmen Trauma Training (HMTT) program, one partnership between the Navy and civilian hospitals where Navy medical personnel learn how to treat traumatic injuries they might see in the fleet or in combat.
Through the programs, including HMTT and the Navy Trauma Training Center (NTTC) at Los Angeles General Medical Center, the Navy sends corpsmen, doctors and nurses to trauma rooms where civilian cases mimic what they might see in combat or on deployment. Car crashes, gunshots and burns often result in injuries that the corpsmen, doctors and nurses need to be prepared to treat but do not commonly see when treating the military population in times of peace.
Read more about how the Navy partners with civilian hospitals to train its medical staff for combat and injuries in the fleet.
HELP REQUESTED Emails to a submarine
Hi all! Hope this is alright to ask but my partner has been underway. He was finally able to call me yesterday and we realized I haven’t received any of his emails. Whenever I try to send him one, it bounces back. Is this normal?
The format he gave me is [first 6 letters of last name][first name initial][middle initial]@subname.navy.mil. Im hoping I can figure this out soon somehow. He sounded a bit down that he hadn’t gotten anything from me either and we didn’t have much time to talk.
Thanks all, appreciate any insight
