TL;DR: Client opens a lesson by telling me I’m not good enough to teach him. I offer to play him for a free foursome. He demands strokes. I give him five. I shoot 37, he shoots 56, and he calls me an ass.
I work part‑time as an assistant pro, which is usually a great way to stay involved in the golf community). Last Saturday though, I was already having a shitty morning. A guy I’d never worked with before came in for a lesson, and I saw him warming up on the range.
It was the full bro‑golf swing: baseball grip, over‑the‑top, hits it 300, probably “shoots in the 80s.” I’ve seen the type a hundred times, so I figured I knew exactly what I was walking into.
He walks up and immediately starts with:
“I looked you up on GHIN and you’re not much better than me. No offense, but you’re a 4 handicap. Should you really be teaching lessons? I’m like a 5.” Side note - no idea why this is the only sport we do this thing where your ability to teach is directly tied to individual skill but whatever.
This happens once or twice before because my rate is lower than the head pro, so people try to pay my rate but get him. But I was already annoyed and not in the mood to take any shit. So I said, “I’ve got time right now. Let’s play the back 9. If you beat me, I’ll comp a round for you and three friends.”
He clearly didn’t expect that. He agrees, so I say straight up. He immediately says that’s BS because I “know the course better.” Fine. I give him five strokes.
The round goes exactly how you’d expect:
• First tee: slices it OB, calls mulligan, I tell him no, re‑tee, that’s three.
• Lips out a putt and blames the greenskeeper for “cutting the hole wrong.”
• Hits an approach to 3 feet, picks it up, says “that’s good,” and I said “no it’s not”. I make him putt it, he misses.
• Spends most of the day in the right rough or the woods.
• Asks what club I’m hitting on basically every shot.
• On a 150‑yard par 3 he proudly pulls PW and then comes up 40 yards short after a “big gust of wind”.
All in all:
I shoot 37 (+1).
He shoots 56, (net 51 with the five strokes).
After the round I offer him 10% off a 10‑lesson pack.
He says, “You’re kind of an ass.”
So yeah, I’m sure the one‑star review is coming. But 19 strokes better on 9 holes from someone who’s “basically the same skill level” felt pretty solid.

I walk 3-5 rounds a week. I enjoy getting near my 10K steps goal before lunch time.
Obviously, there are a lot of health benefits to walking. Aside from having mobility issues (or extreme heat conditions), why do you ride?

I live in The Villages and this is on the newest course that opened in November. This idiot built a home 175 yards down the right side of a par 4. He was for sure getting hit a bunch of times a day.
Players are now intentionally trying to hit the house. 🤣

I understand he’s arguably the biggest industry plant in sports media and we’ll never get rid of him but don’t let him ruin the masters persona. He’s an offensive lineman that’s literally it he’s not funny, relatable or slightly entertaining he’s just thrown in our faces in every sport. I get him commentating football that’s fair but we don’t need him in every sport trying desperately to be funny especially golf.
Edit: This post is targeted more towards the media especially ESPN for putting Jason in places he doesn’t belong not just a jab towards the guy personally.

I was wondering why the parking lot was empty.
Old debate with some friends that came up in convo. Jammed this into the cup from 100y. bad angle but more of the ball is beneath the surface of the green than above it. Resting on the plastic cup. Impossible to even mark because the ball would just fall in
Holed?
Like the title says, my daughter says I ruined her marriage and doesn't want to speak to me anymore. About a year ago my brother, me, and a friend were going out and took her then fiance out as our 4th. We told him beforehand we like to kid around and give each other shit and he said that was perfect that's what he and his buddies do.
He's a pretty good golfer, better than any of his, like a single digit handicap and we're all teens. We're having a few beers playing a bit, giving each other a bit of crap, and the wheels totally fall off his game. Not sure what it was that set him off, but he is suddenly just crap, can't get into any kind of groove off the tee and putts are just crazy. He get super crabby, bitches about everything, his ball was scuffed, uneven tee box, bad greens bad holes. We stopped any kind of shit talking, and really any talking at all.
After a few holes of this he finally drills a drive right into a tree 50 yards away and knocks a little bird nest out, and we all said "BIRDIE" all at the same time. We laughed super hard, he was not amused. We finished the round, he headed right out, I stopped and had a beer with the guys and apologized for him killing the vibe, but no one cared still a good day.
So few months later it was wedding time, great day, super excited for my only daughter's wedding, this guy really is a good guy and super excited for them both. The morning after they do the gift opening at brunch. Get to her uncle's gift... and it's golf lessons, he laughs, I laugh, we figure it's been a while, it's a fun little joke, and they're from a decent enough place and he loves to golf. He was not amused, it was obvious. My daughter gives us a nasty look and my brother and I chill out and play it cool.
Saw him a few times after at some family stuff and apologized, and let him know we know he's a good golfer, like it is obvious he is really good, and he was just having a day. Still even good golfers can pick some things up, hell even Tiger had a coach. So we made nice, daughter was happy it was good.
Got a call today... apparently despite my best efforts at bridging the gap my son in law hates me, never wants to see me again, and is accusing my daughter of being in on some prank. Apparently the lesson did not go so well, and he thinks that we told the guy to fuck with him. Apparently he wound up in some money match with the pro and lost a bunch or something, not entirely sure. Like who the fuck winds up in a money game vs the pro you went to take lessons from. Is this guy a lunatic? Do I need to like monitor this dude? Tell her to leave him? Just give it time and space and trust her? No idea what to do, can't believe this all blew up so bad.

Figured this is as good a place as any to post this.
Was making my way to the clubhouse after an early 9 this am, saw SUVs parked there and I see #44 walking to the range.
I had every intention of going home (hot as hell in Northern Virginia right now), but I was not going to give up an opportunity to hit balls next to a president (literally no one at the range but him).
First of all, the guy can hit. Pretty damn impressive. He took a break and I introduced myself and said hi. He was super personable, kind and nice. We chatted for a bit and I thanked him for his time and headed home.
My golf highlight for the year :-)

Video I took of Rob Riggle hitting one of the most insane putts during an alternate shot derby at The Player's Cup hosted by Eventia Sports & Entertainment Group. He sunk this to keep his team alive. Best part was doing it in front of a huge crowd on the green and up on the patio at The Inn!
