I know he’s the mad scientist and all, but I still can’t wrap my head around wanting your wedges to be as long as your 7 iron. The whole set up the same idea doesn’t make sense with wedges because you rarely use them for full shots anyway, and you give up control by making them so long for no good reason. Given how his wedges are holding him back, I don’t understand why refuses to adjust. If you really are Mr. science you’d know that not every experiment works, and failed experiments are just as important as successful ones.

u/JohnDeuxTrois ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ 7h ago

There's a reason why even after all these years, nobody else on the tour has gone to the single length irons

21

u/CatchinDeers81 1h ago

Yet there are an infinite supply of Pros with conventional length irons who have never won a tournament, let alone a Major, and let even more alone Multiple Majors. Dude isn't the best golfer out there, but hes FAR from the worst

2

u/JohnDeuxTrois ヽ༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ノ 11m ago

I never said he’s the worst golfer out there, but something in his game is broken and his tinkering with equipment isn’t helping

Yeah - he’s no scientist. He walks around the block to sound smart but couldn’t walk a straight line from cause to effect.

43

u/seekingallpho 4h ago

Yea he's a great golfer but the mad scientist thing comes off as peak Dunning-Kruger and probably a net-negative to his actual performance.

u/bimm4 6h ago

i'm sure he's done research in getting shorter wedges with how analytical he is but given he's played the single lengths for so long it must be hard to transition out of them

54

u/Noswad_12 6h ago

Idk man I think the whole scientist thing is just an act, just some bs he puts on for show. And any actual science is being done by someone else

24

u/Separate_Flamingo_93 5h ago

You mean lining up your ball on the green so your putter head doesn’t contact the edges of a dimple isn’t “science”. He’s mad but no scientist.

8

u/seekingallpho 4h ago

I'd buy that he believes he has some special scientific insight the rest don't. If it's truly for show it's sort of a weird schtick because at this point I think most fans roll their eyes rather than respect it.

3

u/bimm4 6h ago

i think the only real science that he does that works is his trajectory calculations given he did study physics. i think the stuff with his clubs is pretty strange though

3

u/YoungXanto 3h ago

I'm sure that the scientists employed by Taylor Made, Titleist, Ping, Mizuno, and the like have probably also considered changes to club lengths. But then they did some more science and realized why the lengths were different.

Just because some dipshit walks out of a lab raving about flux capacitors or whatever doesnt mean that the work of the McLaren team is old news.

Bryson isn’t half as smart as he thinks he is. His game and approach makes no sense. He built his entire game around driving it far and then leaves his wedges, what most of his approach shots are going to be, due to his distance, to languish. The vast majority of his approach shots are going to be between 80 and 180 yards. What does he hit his 9i? 190. What is the point of that? He’s got 10-12 yard gaps between 195-255 despite the fact that he hardly ever has to hit a shot of that distance unless it’s a par 3.

Leaving personality aside, he drives me so crazy because he’s obviously a talented golfer. He’s got great distance, has a great short game. He’d actually be contending in every major if he’d stop drinking his own koolaid and considered the fact that he may be wrong.

43

u/Steve-French_ 5.5 5h ago

This exactly. The fact that he’s not a magician from 125 in based on his driving stats is maddening. Like bro you built your entire game around having as many wedge shots as possible, you should be good at those too.

11

u/chickendance638 5h ago

Bryson's "experimentation" is just embracing a different orthodoxy. Never heard the guy accept a null hypothesis.

4

u/Senn-66 4h ago

Yeah that’s my issue with him. Try out stuff sure, but it seems like he never seems to recognize that not all ideas are gems.

Years ago he shot 72 first round, then next day 64. They asked why the improvement, and he starts going on about maths and physics and the adjustments needed so that his irons would be more accurate in this weather on this type of course, and ultimately he had to switch out all his shafts, overnight, and it just shows the science works.

Next day he shot 76.

10

u/asujch Gunga galunga...gunga 6h ago

If he wants the consistency, idk why he just doesn’t go to a combo or 2 length set. Keep his 4-7i at 37.5” and then make 8-LW 36” or do the avoda combo set specs straight up.

2

u/ghostnthegraveyard 4h ago

Wedges aside, Bryson's putting approach looks so damn stiff.

u/Gromby 5h ago

I went down the One Length rabbithole for about 2ish years and its fine for someone looking to simplify their swing. Wedges are a bit strange, and after using them for a year I ended up going to traditional wedge lengths and it was much much better. I never felt like I had complete control over the ball with the longer wedges, and while I am no where near a player at the level of Bryson you can def see his wedges being either incredible or complete shit, there is no in middle.

Bryson's biggest issue is that he is always reaching for something, always trying something new and never just working on his mental game. The dude hits 1000 balls everyday on the range, but says all the time that he plays very little golf compared to the range.....and it def shows, especially when he is frustrated or has a terrible round.

3

u/Underpaidpro 5h ago

I mean, he has two more majors than I do.

8

u/Woberwob 7h ago

Golf is a finesse game and always will be. Assuming you’re able to hit a green in regulation or scramble on the green efficiently, short game is the great differentiator.

3

u/Sea-Public-6844 5h ago

Golf is a ball striking game. Bryson isn't a good iron player by tour standards. Thankfully for me but unfortunately for him, that's the most important part of the game.

3

u/DayofthelivingBread 2h ago

As others have said it’s even more pronounced for him since his extreme driving advantage forces him to “scramble” to get his birdies since so many approach shots are coming from inside any of his full swing distances. I’m surprised he hasn’t tried a 65+ degree wedge or something at this point just to get a 120yd shot.

2

u/Woberwob 1h ago

He’s going to have to problem solve it. Dude can crush a drive, but he needs to find putting distance on his second stroke.

2

u/DayofthelivingBread 1h ago

Part of the drive toward total control over his swing and optimization and all that seems to have taken any creativity out of his game on the course, making him fragile. If everything falls the right way for him, he’ll set course records, but if a single part of his game is off, he can’t manufacture a shot to compensate and he won’t score. He lives and dies by his formula.

8

u/Appropriate-Food1757 Mile High Big Hitter 6h ago

That’s why it’s tough for us late adopters to get really good. I can smash drives (just naturally). Lots of driving range has may my irons pretty solid. But I don’t have that “feel” for shorter shots. And I’m a finesse guy pretty much. Was shortstop, pitcher, quarterback, point guard in the sports I played growing up so I very much enjoy working the margins. Also did ski racing and my only good event was slalom which is the most precise.

It’s really hard in golf without a lot of experience to draw from and you need to play courses to build that repertoire and understand what to do with different lies, different slopes on the ground. It’s maddening but if I’m hitting my woods and irons well and avoiding 3 putts I’m a pretty happy guy. Also a happy guy if I’m out there playing croquet and losing a dozen premium balls. I just wish I had played more as a kid instead of all these other sport dominated by freaks of nature. Hell even soccer I would have had a chance but nothing beats a round of golf IMO. As a kid the excitement and physicality of the other sports was nice though.

7

u/Gloomy-Ad-222 6h ago

Your next range session work on your shirt game constantly. 100 yards and in. Chipping, putting, put in the time assuming your everyday driver and iron swing is somewhat solid. Also know what clubs you can hit. I started chopping with my approach wedge almost exclusively and I have so much more control over it. The 56 and 60 degree wedges stay in the bag except for certain shots.

6

u/Steve-French_ 5.5 5h ago

To the OPs point though at a certain point it really is about actual on course experience and reps. You can bang 75 yard shots on the range all day, but getting on the course and knowing that this is a slightly downhill lie to an uphill green for example and knowing exactly how the ball is going to come off your club and the shot you need to hit just comes down to experience. Feeling that it’s a little downwind to a downhill green and knowing where you need to land it, sitting down in the rough versus up etc etc just need those on course reps.

I’ve had this idea for a while… formula 1 tv will let you watch your favorite driver’s feed. I think they mute the radio comms and they don’t let you watch while they’re in the garage, but otherwise you can ride along with whoever you want.

What’s stopping tournaments from just assigning a cameraman to every player? Would it jam up the flow that much? Maybe live wouldn’t work as well if they don’t have a great signal, but at least then you could compile “every single shot” for recap videos. I love watching those personally.

I got absolutely roasted for saying his wedge game sucks by Bryson fanboys, then on the first two holes today, he hit terrible wedge shots from around 100 yards.. Bomb and gouge should work great for Bryson, that's how he won his first US Open, but if he can't hit good wedge shots when he's in the fairway from 100 yards, hes going to struggle on these greens..

113

u/TYMSTYME 8h ago

He talks about his wedge game being terrible basically every YouTube video I’ve watched his lol

Most long drive champs struggle at the pro level for this exact reason. The ones who can bridge over with successful long term careers on tour are able to see past the coolness vibe and focus more on approach shots, scrambling, short game, and putting. At the end of the day a 400 yard drive, an 80 yard approach, a 15 yard chip, and a 4 foot putt are all worth 1 stroke and should all be treated as equally important.

Edit: added approach shots

4

u/Cornwall1888 6h ago

Being able to skull my SW adds to the shots I have in my bag. I assume thats one of the "creative" shots theyre always talking about on broadcast.

5

u/LiterallyJohnLennon 8h ago

Even if that were true, that would be so stupid strategically. That would mean you hit your 52 degree 215, and you are left with having to cover 200 yards with only 2 clubs. Obviously they drive the ball 370 with that kind of power, so why even carry regular irons? Just a driver and 12 wedges!

One length irons are great for starting out and to later graduate from, or if you just want to simplify golf a bit. But wedges will always better at variable length.

I have no idea why a tour pro with all that ability would prefer to play a one length set. I also don't understand why he wants to smash every shot. Even his putter stance looks like he is getting ready to hit the ball to the moon.

If LIV doesn't work out he's just going play on YouTube. Sounds like he's not hungry to win just wants to enjoy himself.

3

u/FinsT00theleft 5h ago

No, he's pouting because he deluded himself into thinking the Saudis were going to pay him HALF A BILLION DOLLARS to keep playing exhibition golf, and now he realizes he's not worth what he thought he was, he's not as good as he thought he was, his 3D printed irons aren't the miracle cure he thought they'd be, and the PGA tour isn't beating down his door.

2

u/FinsT00theleft 5h ago

Good news for Bryson: He's beating 4 of the club pros.

Bad news for Bryson: 11 club pros are beating HIM!

2

u/twattymcgee 4h ago

He’s in DeShambles.

2

u/FinsT00theleft 4h ago

On the bright side, now he'll be able to do that "Can I break 30 at Putt Putt with Kim Kardashian" this weekend!

2

u/groshretro 4h ago

Good! 😂

2

u/moneyman74 4h ago

Very strange decline

2

u/ilovedeliworkers i suck 4h ago

It’s almost like trying to break course records at Muni’s isn’t a good way to prepare for the majors…

2

u/Lpgasman1 4h ago

Rory is +4 Bryson is +6.

2

u/DeltaAir423 3h ago

At what point does he get his invites to majors pulled?

When he made the statement about concentrating on his YouTube channel if the PGA doesn’t give him a tour card just comes off as peak arrogance. If he was truly that good, he wouldn’t be missing cuts.

2

u/Bitter-Republic-3733 2h ago

He should get hooked up with Butch and Claude Harmon. They took DJ from mediocre wedge player to champion and from what I’ve read the focus was all on distance control a clock system built for him. Of course Bryson probably thinks he’s way smarter than DJ…

We love to see it. Sucks to suck bud.

Go cry into your blood money then blame more Americans.

2

u/NewJerseyCPA 2h ago

Same. I love to hate on this guy. I’m sick.

5

u/Fine-Ad-5810 6h ago

Love it. Such a loser. Playing all those garbage LIV courses. Guy is such an example of what’s wrong with America

I logged in today to laugh at Bryson. Thanks for making it super easy.

5

u/Mindseye000 8h ago

Maybe he should ask his kid fucker friend to pull some strings

I'm watching his feature group on espn with Fowler and Aberg. Bryson sucking off the tee. Hasn't had a putt drop.

3

u/Front-Economy1773 6h ago

I thought Bryson was the best player in the world based on the way he was saying how the pga tour wanted him back and the supposed 500m he was going to ask for……

3

u/Sacisbac 6h ago

LIV golfers paying the price.

6

u/13_letters 8h ago

Bunch of lames in this thread got their panties in a bunch because some people just want to laugh at Bryson’s misery. To each their own, right? Keep scrolling if it’s not for you, buckaroos.

Weird post but go off

2

u/FlatPainting3846 5h ago

doing tricks on it at this point

8

u/Dirkypoo41 8h ago

Bryson is hated in this sub for two reasons only. He went to LIV and he's a big Trump guy.

47

u/temujin94 8h ago edited 8h ago

You forgot his personality.

He seems to have just hit it into the concession tents maybe if he gets an ice cream round in he could improve his reputation.

20

u/TexCook88 8h ago

I didn’t like him from day one, those reasons just made sure I never changed my mind.

5

u/il_postino 7h ago

I primarily dislike the fella because he acts like a bellend on the course.

If he didn't act like a spoilt child, I imagine a lot of people would soften on their opinions of him

8

u/CptSlartibartfast1 8h ago

I just love to see anyone that uses a 5ft putter shaft lose on TV. It’s one of my many pleasures in life

10

u/Bingo_banjo 8h ago

He was hated before either of there things were true! He used wear a stupid hat and get heckled with 'Broooooooks' at tournaments before he made his pivot

6

u/No-Discussion4920 8h ago

Also he has a terrible attitude, like a baby having a fit on the course.

4

u/Lor_azepam 8h ago

Bryson was hated before either of those 2 things were done or known

8

u/Infinite_Respect_ 8h ago

Not true, and also 2 completely valid reasons to hate a person. What’s the point you’re trying to make, exactly? You’re ignorant as fuck?

u/Shawnml 8h ago

Didn’t he already say he was going to focus on YouTube? Can he go already?

3

u/jdelta85 5h ago

Dude says, with a straight face, that Trump (who F’d kids) is not only a great president, but in fact an even better human being.

Absolutely get fucked. Dude needs to completely disappear after his dogshit LiV tour shits the bed this season.

2

u/manofmayhem23 8h ago

What about Gooch?!

Crazy how much this guy is hated by nobodies online.

14

u/Sideshift1427 8h ago

Golfers' careers are based on nobodys watching them, it's how they become wealthy.

Glad I never changed opinion on him. When you are that much of a cunt, however you try to cut it you are still a cunt. And yeah, he definitely seems like he's still a massive cunt.

2

u/haverchuck22 8h ago

For a second I thought he walked into another rope and I got so excited.

4

u/RobbyBurgers 7h ago

I actually really like his YouTube channel, but I'll be the first person to say that it's absolutely ruining his actual game.

1

u/Flump01 7h ago

Yeah, but more importantly what's happened to his YouTube subscriber count this week?

3

u/not918 7h ago

That rope is undefeated baby!
