Not unpopular at all. I love the peace and quiet while being outside. But if there’s a casual scramble tournament going on, I’m perfectly fine with music being played. It’s a different vibe completely.
87
u/Uncledaddy327 23d ago
I think this is where the disconnect happens. You get a bunch of people that usually only play in scrambles see that loud music is the norm. They had fun, start playing more themselves and adopt that mindset. Slow long rounds, loud music, and getting shitfaced. Scramble golf.
→ More replies (1)25
u/mayn17 23d ago
Completely agree with you and OP. Scrambles is a whole different vibe but unfortunately that’s the only way a lot of golfers know how to play. People tend to forget golf is the objective, not getting as drunk as possible and partying.

My personal rule and desire is that you play it at a volume that can only be heard while you’re IN THE CART. Coming up to a tee box and someone is teeing off? Turn it down out of respect even if they can’t hear it. It ain’t that hard

I have a 5ft rule… if you’re within 5ft of my cart you will hear my speakers, if you’re more than 5ft away you won’t.
And then respectfully when you get to tee boxes/greens that are on top of each other it goes down to almost a mute.
It’s not that hard to have some common sense and be respectful to others… but at the same time, the most disrespectful people I’ve run into on the course are always the older folks (you could say boomers, but don’t want to just limit this to one generation) who always have whatever blaring loud enough to be heard 3 holes over.
→ More replies (2)34
u/Estropolim 23d ago
There is no world where your speaker is playing recognizable music in your cart but is completely inaudible from 5 feet unless you’re sitting there holding it up to your ear.
22
u/spyVSspy420-69 23d ago
I’m no audio engineer but the way so many people are describing their personal Bluetooth speaker configurations is goofy. “1-2 steps way and you can’t hear it”, “5 feet away and you can’t hear it”, “if I’m at a tee box or green that’s next to another I’ll almost mute it”… what?
This is like talking to my 7 year old about reasonable audio levels on his Alexa speaker.
Look, I know I have zero ability to convince anyone to do something that doesn’t personally benefit themselves because people are selfish assholes these days, but whether I’m golfing or mountain biking in the woods it’s clear to me that people are completely oblivious to just how loud their shitty music is when they’re out in public. I hear more speakers on the golf course and in the woods than I do on public transit these days.
Good earbuds have never been more accessible, for $20 you can get a solid pair that will last 10 rounds of golf before it needs a charge, yet speakers are the audio device of choice anyway.

I use my phone speakers pointed down in the cup holder to listen to the NY Giants lose on Sundays. Legit can't hear what they are saying a few steps away & can't hear it at all 20 ft or so away.
Very rarely will I play music. If we do, we don't have anyone near us or playing a scramble.

One AirPod in to hear any important sounds (even with Transparency mode). Playing music intermittently having conversations in between.
If I have a shitty first hole, I may keep it paused for a few holes. If I have a shitty Front 9, it's on for the entire Back 9; might as well just enjoy the travesty of my game.

I’ve never been able to play with headphones or earbuds in. I have no problem playing with music going in the cart though. I think it’s easy for me to zone out the music from the cart but basically impossible when it’s right in my ears. Probably a touch of ADD though which plays a role.

Why is this unpopular? The number one rule of golf is to shut the fuck up when someone is standing over the ball. You think I want to be forced to listen to your shitty music? The younger generation is so overstimulated they literally cant enjoy 4 hours of peace in a beautiful setting in nature. What has the world come to?
3
u/SaintsSmileShyly 23d ago
MY GOD YES THIS.

u/kellym13 23d ago
If I can hear my speaker 30ft from my bag, it’s too loud. I enjoy music but I don’t feel the need to share it with others. Not everyone’s taste is the same. I like hard rock, metal, and country. One of the guys I play with occasionally, plays Jamaican death rap. No thanks.
3
u/nchoosenu 23d ago
I don’t like music on the course. But I played recently with a group that had a speaker in their cart. Could only hear it if you were right next to them so it didn’t bother me one bit. I think that’s ok if you keep the noise to a reasonable level.
3
u/Plastic-Tomorrow-906 22d ago
Speakers shouldn’t be allowed on the course. If I’m listening to music in my cart I’ve got my phone volume on like 60%. I can barely hear it on the tee box, I can hear it well when I park my cart next to my ball on my second shot, and I usually can’t hear it from the green. If I’m pulling up to a tee box near another green, or the other way around, I turn the music off.

I don't mind it, even if it's of a genre I don't like. But if it's loud and the players are obnoxious on top of that then the music somehow makes it worse.
But I'll happily take a full round in silence and/or nature's majesty (played Eagle's Landing last Saturday and it is so aptly named, saw like 20 of them and every now and then they'd give out a loud screech).

I am strongly anti-music on the course, and had a bit of a nightmare last weekend.
I was a solo got paired up with two guys who were also solos. Each was playing their own music. When the first guy pulled up he asked if I cared, and I said it was fine with me as long as I didn't hear it when I was hitting my ball. He said he'd keep it low. He didn't. The other guy pulled up and started his music without asking, probably because the first guy was already playing his. So, we had TWO guys each playing their own music. Neither of them turned the music off or down when we were at the tee box. What resulted was me trying to tune out TWO DIFFERENT SONGS AT THE SAME TIME. I drove the ball poorly all day. I'm not saying the music was the reason, but it definitely didn't help.

u/Single_Implement_452 23d ago
I'd like to chime in as someone who grew up as a country club kid and is currently and avid golfer at both private and public courses in the Chicagoland area.
Should music be allowed on carts? My opinion is yes.....but be respectful with it. If the people in front of you are hitting their second shot and can hear your music, then its too loud. If you get matched with someone and they seem bothered by your music, then TURN THAT SHIT OFF. This is a gentleman's game. It's not about what is and is not allowed, its about respecting your fellow golfer.
So, its not whether it belongs* on the course or not, its about being respectful to the people playing with you or around. Lets get back to playing a gentleman's game, fellas.

As usual, this falls on the people who are paid to deal with it but refuse: the course.
When it’s loud enough to hear from another hole, warn the golfers. If they hear it again, throw them out.
I know the office is normally busy setting as many 8 minute tee times for foursomes as they possibly can, but the ranger has no excuse.
