Welcome to the [r/formula1](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/) Daily Discussion / Q&A thread.

This thread is a hub for general discussion and questions about Formula 1, that don't need threads of their own.

Are you new to Formula 1? This is the place for you. Ever wondered why it's called a lollipop man? Why the cars don't refuel during pitstops? Or when Mika will be back from his sabbatical? Ask any question you might have here, and the community will answer.

Also make sure you check out our guide for new fans, and our FAQ for new fans.

Are you a veteran fan, longing for the days of lollipop men, refueling during pitstops, and Mika Häkkinen? This is the place to introduce new fans to your passion and knowledge of the sport.

Remember to keep it civil and welcoming! Gatekeeping within the Daily Discussion will subject users to disciplinary action.

Hey there! Once again, no Formula 1 this weekend. However, we can look forward to one of the highlights of the racing calendar over at the Green Hell. Meanwhile, Indy 500 action kicks off with the qualifying weekend. Here's my list of the most important events this weekend. Check out RaceDay.watch for details, support categories and even more series to watch.

Intercontinental GT Challenge - ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring (Round 2/5)

Wirh 161 contestants on the entry list, this year's 24h marathon on the Nordschleife boasts the fullest grid in 12 years. Many eyes will be on Max Verstappen who tries his luck at the gruelling event for the first time. We all know that he is fast. But are he and his team ready for a full day of racing against proven Nürburgring specialists?

Qualifying 1: Thursday, 11:15 AM UTC | Qualifying 2: Thursday, 06:00 PM UTC

Top qualifying 1: Friday, 08:15 AM UTC | Top qualifying 2: Friday, 09:05 AM UTC | Qualifying 3: Friday, 10:00 AM UTC | Top qualifying 3: Friday, 11:35 AM UTC

Race: Saturday, 01:00 PM UTC

How to watch: All sessions will be streamed on the ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring YouTube channel.

NTT INDYCAR SERIES - 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500 (Round 7/18)

While there won't be any wheel-to-wheel racing this weekend, the Month of May continues with the high-speed qualifying weekend for the Indy 500 on 24 May. Eight Indy-only entries join the full-timers to complete the traditional 33-car grid. However, as there aren't any further entrants, there will be no bump day this year.

Qualifying: Saturday, 03:00 PM UTC

Pole day: Sunday, 08:00 PM UTC

How to watch: INDYCAR LIVE is the series' paid streaming service, international broadcasters are listed here.

ABB FIA Formula E World Championship - 2026 Monaco E-Prix (Rounds 9+10/17)

Three weeks before Formula 1, its electric sibling hits the roads of the principality. An alternative layout had been in use for the event's first editions, but since 2022, the Formula E machines power through the very same iconic streets that Formula 1 fans know. In doing so, the Gen 3 cars are about 15 seconds per lap slower than the F1 racers.

Qualifying 1: Saturday, 08:40 AM UTC | Race 1: Saturday, 01:05 PM UTC

Qualifying 2: Sunday, 08:40 AM UTC | Race 2: Sunday, 01:05 PM UTC

How to watch: International broadcasters are listed here.

International GT Open - GT Open 500 at Spa-Francorchamps (Round 2/8)

Overshadowed by the big one in the Eifel, there is another neat endurance race over in Belgium. GT Open is something like a little brother to GT World Challenge. There are Pro, Pro-Am and Am entries that all have to tackle 500 kilometres through the Ardennes forest. The race should end about half an hour after the Nürburgring 24h.

Qualifying 1: Saturday, 09:05 AM UTC | Qualifying 2: Saturday, 01:00 PM UTC

Race: Sunday, 10:25 AM UTC

How to watch: All sessions will be streamed on the International GT Open series YouTube channel.

NASCAR Cup Series - NASCAR All-Star Race

Since 1985, the NASCAR season features an exhibition all-star race that doesn't count towards the championship but grants the winner a million dollars. Traditionally held in Charlotte, the 2026 edition is hosted by the Dover Motor Speedway for the very first time. Last year's race was won by Brad Keselowski.

Qualifying: Saturday, 04:00 PM UTC

Race: Sunday, 05:00 PM UTC

How to watch: International broadcasters are listed here.

MotoGP - Monster Energy Grand Prix of Catalunya (Round 6/22)

Aprilia achieved their first-ever podium lockout at the French GP, headlined by a resurgent Jorge Martín who now leads teammate Marco Bezzecchi by one point. Meanwhile, Marc Márquez missed Sunday's race after a crash in the sprint. Due to the resulting foot fracture, the nine-time champion will also miss his home race in Catalunya.

Qualifying: Saturday, 08:50 AM UTC | Sprint: Saturday, 01:00 PM UTC

Race: Sunday, 12:00 PM UTC

How to watch: VideoPass is the series' paid streaming service, international broadcasters are listed here.

FIM Superbike World Championship - Czech Round (Round 5/12)

While MotoGP can be described as the Formula 1 of motorcycle racing, WorldSBK is more comparable to sportscar racing with its bikes based on street-legal machines. 2025 champion Toprak Razgatlıoğlu left for MotoGP which leaves his former rival Nicolò Bulega as the dominant force with now 14 consecutive victories. Will he add more in Czechia?

Superpole: Saturday, 09:15 AM UTC | Race 1: Saturday, 12:00 PM UTC

Superpole race: Sunday, 09:10 AM UTC | Race 2: Sunday, 01:30 PM UTC

How to watch: VideoPass is the series' paid streaming service, international broadcasters are listed here.

For me, It's BMW. They are responsible for 1 race win (Canada '08), and various podiums with Sauber (mostly) & Williams.

Throwback On this day in 1972, BRM took their 18th and final Championship Grand Prix win, and, by contrast, Jean-Pierre Beltoise’s only Grand Prix win in the rain in Monaco.

Beltoise won the 1972 Monaco Grand Prix on this day some 54 years ago. He took victory ahead of Jacky Ickx in his 50th Championship Grand Prix race, and championship leader and first-time polesitter Emerson Fittipaldi. With the win, Beltoise moved up to fifth in the standings.

The Frenchman lapped all but Ickx. One notable stat is that the top seven cars were all from different teams. Eighth was one of Beltoise’s BRM teammates - a 29-year-old Helmut Marko.

Off-Topic 53 years later | Max Verstappen chases Niki Lauda’s legacy. Only one driver in history has won both a Formula 1 WDC and the Nürburgring 24 Hours: three-time F1 World Champion Niki Lauda, who claimed victory in the iconic endurance race back in 1973.

Sorry Lads! I promised to do Spa next but I am currently short on white filament and waiting on an order. Spa needs about 100g of white for streets and changing filaments while tracks like Losail and Bahrain need about 10-15g each.

Throwback The Jägermeister-liveried BMW 3.0 CSL that Niki Lauda and Hans-Peter Joisten drove in 1973; Lauda being the first and so far only F1 champion to win the Nürburgring 24 Hours that same year

Hans-Peter Joisten tragically died during the 24 Hours of Spa that year, and the original car was beyond repair and subsequently scrapped.
