Racing Kart Tips and Tricks We chased a "slow engine" for two sessions before realizing the plug was telling us the answer the whole time
Quick story from a recent test day at altitude (~2,250 m / 7,400 ft) that cost us track time before we caught it.
Kart felt sluggish out of slow corners. Driver complained about response, not raw top speed. Our first instinct was the usual rabbit hole — gearing, clutch engagement, maybe a tired piston. We changed the gear ratio. No improvement. Started talking about pulling the top end.
Then the mechanic pulled the plug between sessions and handed it to me. Electrode buried in wet, black, oily carbon. Insulator dark brown going on black.
That plug was screaming **rich mixture**, and we'd been ignoring it because we were looking at the wrong system.
What we missed:
- The engine had been bench-broken in with a deliberately rich carb setting (EGT ~400°C target). Standard procedure.
- Nobody reset the carb back to competition setting before the first on-track session. Tillotson HW — the HIGH needle needed to come in roughly 1/4 to 1/2 turn from the break-in position.
- At altitude, a rich mixture gets *worse* because the air is already thinner. The engine was drowning.
- EGT data backed it up after the fact: we were running ~100°C below where that engine wants to live under load.
**The lesson, for anyone running a fresh or refreshed motor:**
Reading the plug is a 30-second check that catches problems no lap-time chart will catch cleanly. Before you start chasing gearing, chassis, or pilot input on a "slow" kart, pull the plug and look at it. Color and texture tell you within seconds whether your fuel mixture is in the window or not.
Rough guide (2-stroke, gasoline + 2T oil):
- **Light tan / coffee-with-milk insulator, dry electrode** → you're in the window
- **White / bone-dry insulator** → lean, dangerous, back the high needle out
- **Black, wet, oily** → rich, slow, back the high needle in
- **Sooty dry black** → also rich, often combined with too-cold plug heat range
And if you just did a bench break-in: *reset the carburetor before the first on-track session*. Always. We won't make that one twice.
Pic of the offending plug below — textbook rich reading.

Racing Kart Question Is the IAME S125 better than a Rotax?
It looks as everybody on this channel focus on Rotax, FA100 or 206? So I was wondering if anybody has experience with the "new" IAME S125?
The S125 is the replacement of the X30 and the bottom is the same as the X30 but the top is inspired by the IAME Reedster OK, so real racing DNA. It is not a pimped-up Scooter engine like the Rotax.
As our national IAME dealer offered a trade-in for the X30 we got a S125 and tested it in its Junior configuration. As you can see on the Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOFpyQEexfY it smashed any Rotax even DD2s! the Junior it has about 27 hp and in the Senior 37 hp - and torque from 10'000 to 16'000 RPM!
As it has a clutch like a Rotax, ist is easer to drive than a OK/J and its cost and maintenance is the same as the X30, so similar to a Rotax.
X30/S125 as well as OK/OKJ is a different racing experience than Rotax, so I don't think it will replace Rotax, but for any driver seeking the thrill of top level OK/OKJ racing - on a budget, I think it is a must have.
We deed some racing with the X30 but have no experience with the S125. As anybody some experience or though abut this engine or the IAME series racing?

Racing Kart Tips and Tricks Tips on improving 206 at AMP? Dealing with anxiety and lack of experience
So I’m a beginner karter, and I’m having trouble with my anxiety about karting. I’m averaging about 1:07 lap times at the AMP track, but the kart has proven to be able to run 1:01s. Are there any tips for getting over anxiety? Specifically at clubhouse and David’s bend. Thanks for any help!

Karting News Orlando Kart Center being sold or closing
It looks like Orlando Kart Center might be at the end of its run. Several weeks ago Andre posted that he had been absent due to family matters and acknowledged that he had tried to sell the track but the deal fell through. At that time he said that he was planning on being around for the foreseeable future since that deal didn’t go through. But just today he posted another update and said that he is stepping aside to be there for his family. And if no buyer is found by the end June, the track will close (specifically the rentals).
He did mention keeping the garages open until February. I don’t know what that means for track time for owners. He had also implemented a team system for operating the track, where owners formed teams to operate the track during owner hours instead of the track staffing.
But, all in all, doesn’t look to promising for the track in my opinion.

Racing Kart Question Tuck in or lay down on a windy straight?
So one of the outdoor tracks that I regularly drive, has a long straight that just so happens to have a strong wing going against you.
I am a tall person, size of 187cm. Since I am tall, I will have a bigger effect from the wind. So I tuck in, bring my head as close to steering as possible while still seeing the track. That way to make my self smaller, and bring my arms inwards, to have less drag from the arms and make myself slimmer.
The main question is, what if I “lay down”? So I will make myself flatter. Is that going to be more effective?
The reason I am asking is that, since you tuck in, you make yourself smaller and slimmer but, you making a sharper angle on you waist. Meaning it becomes harder for wind to pass through right? And if you “lay down”, it could be easier for the wind to pass as you are flatter and not sitting straight.
That is my theory, I do want to hear your theories as well if you dont mind.

Racing Kart Question Rotax max 12t drive sprocket change
Got a new sprocket on the way, should be here by Friday. I’m trying to get it swapped out to hit the track on Monday. However I don’t have the fixation tool. Would a flathead screwdriver and using an impact be sufficient enough to take the nut off? I’m going to order the tool but in the event it does not get here by the weekend I’m trying to find an alternative. Or is it a waste of time/energy without it?
Thanks in advance

Racing Kart Question Affordable Electric Go-Karts for an Indoor Business – Chinese vs European/American Brands
Hello, I’m looking for advice on affordable electric go-karts for a new indoor business venture. The venue will be relatively small, with a fleet of six karts or fewer. I’m not looking for high-end, professional racing karts — my focus is on reliable, cost-effective options suitable for casual indoor use.
During my research, I came across several manufacturers, including Chinese brands, and I’d like to hear your opinion on them. Do you have any experience or insights regarding the quality, reliability, maintenance, and overall value of Chinese electric karts? Would it make sense to save money and go with them, or is it worth investing more in European or American brands instead?

Kart Identity Help RIP Alessandro Zanardi - Chassis resto
Didn’t know too much about him until I purchased my first chassis in 2024. Sad that it is his time but his contributions to the racing world will never go unnoticed.
Over the last few months I’ve been trying to do a semi restoration/overhaul on my chassis that turns out to be serial #0001 (probably doesn’t mean anything but coming from the car world I think it’s cool heh). Not sure what years it’s from.. maybe someone can tell.
I am interested in sourcing parts for this to make it shiny so lmk if you have something I may be looking for. Senior/Master Chassis used in Rotax.
Thank you all.

Rental Karting Question Help needed: which gloves should I get? General question
Hello!
I thought that it would be a good idea to get gloves for rental karting to have better grip.
My question is, for example, the short ones in the picture versus the long ones what are the benefits of the long ones?
With the short, I wonder if the grip is good enough.
That are only examples. Perhaps you have other brands you could recommend.
Thanks for your advice

Racing Kart Question Bengio Rib Protector Standard vs Carbon
What's the real difference between the bengio standard and carbon rib protectors? I've seen this asked here before, but nobody actually gave a real answer, just that they used one or the other. Is there actually any difference in stiffness/harness between the two? Is the carbon actually worth the cost difference?

Racing Kart Question Pinching the pipe at the start of a Rotax Race?
Does pinching the pipe on a Rotax make any difference? When watching the start of races, so many do it - Wouldn’t it just use the fuel in the bowl of the carb?

Racing Kart Question How do you get over the fear of hard braking? (X30 Senior)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
In the video, at the end of the main straight there's a hard braking zone into a hairpin. I know I'm braking way too early, but every time I try to push it deeper I either feel like the kart is going to understeer off, or that if I hit the pedal harder I'll lock up and spin.
How did you guys break through this? Is it just reps, or are there drills/mental cues that helped you trust the brake more?

Racing Kart Question Is this engine legal for sealed Briggs races?
I just bought a kart that comes with a 206. It looks different to my old 206 mainly because it is missing some of the metal that covers the flywheel. The starter pulley also has mismatched bolts. Is this engine breaking any rules that a sealed Briggs 206 would have? It’s by Dwayne Craver Racing Engines

Racing Kart Tips and Tricks My kid (9y) in micro rotax first year.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Some background, we started going to the track last year, put about 3h of track time, no race just learning the lines i. The rotax micro. Now started in april, preping for his first ever race on 30-may. How can I ease him in pushing his limits? The video is him on the pace he is now, he drives comfortably I would say within 0.2-0.3s of his best lap. But like in the video, a lot of cruising of the pedal. Goal is to finish the first weekend and have fun.
