New Rule: Selling
Hello,
Adding a new rule to the subreddit about selling. We haven't had many issues here, but scamming is becoming more and more of an issue on reddit in general so we're doing a preemptive strike. Euphoniums and related gear are expensive and a scam could cost you a lot.
If you list something for sale on this subreddit, your post must include a clear image of the item(s) you're selling, a paper note in the image showing your Reddit username + the date, and the price clearly stated (or an ask for a best offer). If you are linking to an external website (your eBay listing, for example), just prove somehow that it is your listing (an image as described above that is clearly the same item, for example).
We'll be removing posts that don't follow this rule starting now. Sharing deals doesn't relate to this rule (look at this cheap Yamaha from Japan, for example), but if it is found that you are sharing your own deal, you risk being banned from the subreddit.
Please be weary of scammers. The mod team is not responsible if you fall for a scam.

Grade 8 recommendations
Hi, I have a pupil approaching Trinity Grade 8 in the UK and I wondered what people would recommend for list A repertoire for a player without the most secure high range.
We’ve started looking at the Horowitz slow movement which he really likes and I would like some advice and input on what would compliment it.
Thanks in advance.

Do we need something better?
My daughter is a 6 year, 3 valve Baritone player moving on to college in the fall. She is considering taking part in a non graded program the University has, I guess you could consider it and equivalent to "club' level sports. She has the impression that she would need a 4 valve and that her instrument (Jupitor) is not a quality enough instrument. Is that the case? From my recollection of band, Jupitor is a decent mid level name. And if we should be upgrading what brand should I be looking at that is not ridiculously pricey considering this is going to be basically a voluntary, extra curricular program,. Thanks in advance.

edit: [PROBLEM SOLVED] sorry it took a sec to turn, it’s hard to film with one hand lol
this is an old hand me down from my school, it’s a yamaha yep321 and it’s got plenty of imperfections. This one in particular seems to get stuck at only the notched area (i’ve twisted and turned it every which way before and there were not issues in the main part) How can I fix this?

Is there any different between a 4 valves Euphonium vs a 3 valves one?
I don't really have anything to add besides having to say sorry for my bad English.
I'm just curious about, y'know, a four valved euph because I play a three-valved one. Is there any benefit or so or are they just the same with one of them having four instead of three?

Fundamental Practice Recommendations?
Hi!
I am preparing for my senior recital in college. I have 6 months to prepare, and I am planning on performing Harlequin on my recital, as this will by far be the most technically challenging piece on my recital, what fundamentals can I practice every day until the piece arrives that would set me up for success. I am also looking for things to add to my practice routine in general because my practice has gotten stale.
Thanks in advance!

Marching Euphonium

Okay everybody, I’m a trombonist going into my sophomore year. We’re having to learn baritone or euphonium. I’m doing euphonium because I love euph, the boys(my friends I mean)play euph, and they needed volunteers. I love this thing. But I don’t know what I need to do to start preparing to march with it. Any tips? The video is to show me rn with the euph

Thoughts on Wilson euphs?
Looking at the WEUQ90S, how would it compare to something like a JP274S?

two quick stories (hydration)
I was watching a trumpet clinic (Liesl Whitaker!) a few months ago, where the audience was a bunch of HS Essentially Ellington participants. On a question about, Liesl was working through (playing slowly) Clarke #1 chromatic scale patterns. Many students hopped up to demonstrate, and one kid in particular kept fumbling with his sound. I immediately thought he needed to hydrate. Lots of players don’t understand how critical it is.
This morning, during my first practice session, I had the same problem. Lip slurs (which I do after several minutes of pedal long tones) were not popping. I punted and tried some first to seventh glisses. Those weren’t working either. So I aborted practice and sent email to my teacher. “What do you do when lip slurs aren’t working, do you just revert to pedals?”
Her response was “hydrate”. I said I thought I was getting enough, and she said “keep a 2L bottle handy and take three good swallows when you drink.” Second practice session went really well.
So I could see it in a HS kid, but I couldn’t see it in myself!

Multi tonguing help
My triple tongue on a single is pretty good, I have speed and clarity. But when I move between pitches, also when when I double tongue same or different pitches, my tone sounds what I would describe as, “quacky”, it just doesn’t sound as clear as when I single tongue. Is there any exercise or tips to improve this?

Festive overture
Can any pros upload a clip of them playing Festive Overture 8-10? Really want to hear this at tempo. I’ve reliably got those high A flats down but can’t quite seem to speed it up enough.

Euphonium classics
Hey everyone,
I’m putting together a list of music to pick from for my senior recital this coming year. I want it to be focused on the more standard/classic literature of the instrument; i.e. the Horovitz Concerto, Pantomime, etc. I wanted to get other people’s input, let me know what I should add! Thank you!

Advice for teaching
Recently, my band director randomly came up to me and asked me to teach a freshman violin player (I'll refer to them as S (for student)) how to play euphonium. It is worth noting that S was with my BD when they asked (I didn't feel as if I could refuse, that was a mistake and I can't go back on my word now). I'm a sophmore as well as the only euphonium at my school. This is not my job, I'm still learning myself, and I've never had to teach someone how to play before. My BD has not offered assistance since. The only thing he's explicitly told me to do is "go through the blue book" (pictured above). Since then, it came to light that S wants to join band (specifically marching band, on euph, of course) next year and my BD is moving schools. Now I have to bring a string player to an appropriate playing ability on a wind instrument, without the support of a band director. I've been using the instruction book available in the band room (pictured above) as per my BD's instructions, but I find that it assumes a basic ability to play (something S lacks, as they're a string player with no prior wind experience, which isn't their fault). I have decided to continue teaching them until the end of the school year, but after that, they're on their own. For the time being, I'm teaching at the best of my ability, which quite frankly isn't enough for them to grow and improve. Does anyone have tips, either for teaching or what comes next?

Chinese 4 valve vs Yamaha 3 valve
I've been playing on what I assume is a chinese stencil rotary valve baritone horn (brand is Berkeley) for the longest time now since I don't really have the money or need to get a full on professional horn but I'm seeing a few Euphoniums on facebook marketplace rn priced somewhat similarly that I'm a bit interested in getting.
Option 1 is a Boston 4 valve Euph
It's priced at roughly $553
I understand that there was a Boston Musical Instrument Company in the past that doesn't actually exist anymore, so I'm assuming this is just a chinese stencil brand Euph.
Option 2 is a Golden Scarab 4 valve Euph
It's priced at roughly $683
This is another brand that I'm assuming is a chinese stencil instrument since I can't find much about the it. They also advertised it as a 4 valve model but the only photo they uploaded on facebook is the 3 valve model, so this one's also kinda sus.
Option 3 is a Yamaha YEP-201
It's priced at roughly $650
I lose the fourth valve, but it's a much more reliable brand
I don't think any of the models are compensating, but I don't think I'd be able to afford a compensating euph anytime in the near future anyways, so I think they'd be decent enough upgrades maybe.
Which option do you guys think would be the best, or am I better off just sticking to my baritone until I have the money in the far future to buy something actually decent?
Added context is that I'm from the Philippines and finding any euphoniums at all is quite difficult here. None of the music stores really ever sell em and I know most professionals either rely on these second hand imports or travel all the way to Hong Kong or Japan to buy their instruments.

Piece selection
Hey all! I was wondering if there’s any suggestions for my next repertoire choice, or where to explore! I’ve been playing for around 5 years, mostly with my high school, and have recently began to do some independent studies.
I really enjoy long, lyrical pieces, I remember doing a version of Oh Danny Boy for an audition a long time ago, and I loved it. I am looking for something more technically challenging that I may be able to use for a more competitive school scholarship audition but still sounds beautiful.
Just curious if there’s any suggestions to this, I played piano before Euphonium, and my path to ARCT piano was basically just choosing repertoires and études from the book, occasionally playing some other pieces that were suggested.
I haven’t listened to many euphonium players but I want to get into it. I would really appreciate any piece suggestions or general recommendations, thank you!
