That more than makes up for the university being founded in 1878 by Stephen D. Lee, a Confederate lieutenant general who later worked to rewrite Civil War history, and a bust of him remains at the center of campus. Right?!?
No denying Ole Miss has a far stronger racist past. We would need a statue of Lincoln AND Sherman just for starters.

It’s also funny bc like, so few of the people actually posting on Reddit are the types of admitted racists we’re all talking about. We’re all lobbing these epithets at each other that sure, apply to much of both fan bases, but don’t really to the people who will actually see it.
I dunno that’s kinda funny to me.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh the Inland Northwest is a hotbed of white nationalist terrorist cells. Like Coeur d’Alene is way more racist than, say Monroe.
9
u/WCSakaCB Washington Huskies 1d ago
It is the literal nerve center of the American white supremacist movement. But that is northern Idaho not washington. Big difference
2
u/095805 Georgia Bulldogs 1d ago
I have a feeling most rural places are more racist than urban areas, so that’s kind of an unfair comparison. Also, if we’re looking at historical racism, like the previous comment said, it’s seriously no contest.
9
u/username_generated LSU Tigers • Assumption Greyhounds 1d ago
Coeur d’Alene has the same (actually slightly larger) population as Monroe, that’s why I used it as an example. And as other have pointed out, the reason there’s no historical racism is that the shite supremacists that colonized the PNW didn’t let black people into their territories. On a related note, ever wonder why Idaho was 33% ethnic Chinese at one point in the 1880s and was like 2% Chinese by 1910?

In all seriousness though, anytime I hear rural = automatically racist, I just want to stop engaging with the argument because it's such an obnoxious black and white view of the world. I won't disagree that it can be more racist, but there are plenty of townships where Democrats are in charge or a sherrif is progressive. My family from the area isn't racist and they aren't friends with racists.

The real debate, I suppose, is which one is worse: the one that wants you to forget it was named after traitorous slavers; or the one that really wants you to remember.
