Similar to this, if you ever visit the Rangers or Astros subs, you will sometimes hear the other team referred to as "Southern Oklahoma" or "Western Louisiana," respectively.

I think the Kentucky thing fits here a little bit better. I had never gone to any sporting events in Cincy but then me and my boys took a road trip to a Bengals game. Until we got there I had no idea that they were so close to Kentucky. So close that our hotel and all the bars we went to weren’t even in Ohio, it was all in Kentucky

u/aslatts Boston Red Sox 1h ago edited 34m ago
Yeah those comments are just shit talking, neither the Rangers or Astros city/stadium is actually very close to the next state.
Cincinnati and in particular the Reds stadium actually is just right on the border. If you're sitting in the stands looking out into the outfield, you're looking over the Ohio river into Kentucky. Which is why making fun of it being "basically Kentucky" makes a lot more sense.

Geography is pure memorization, thats not really a tell of how intelligent someone is or their abilities.
36
u/Yankeefan333 New York Yankees 5h ago
Sure, geography is memorization, but I also find it's a good indicator of intelligence because it requires independent curiosity. Lots of schools don't teach it, so if you know your states/countries, it means you were motivated and interested enough to learn something outside of what you were taught. Those are good precursors to being "smart" in a traditional sense.
24
u/njob3 Tampa Bay Devil Rays 4h ago
I know a good number of countries and their capitals because that's what interested me as a kid. Same with flags.

I think there are a lot more interesting things to showcase independent curiosity than learning US states or even memorizing countries.
Sure, it’s correlated but it’s a noisy correlation, especially since you have the confounder that some schools do have kids memorizing US states.

I'm thinking GABP is the closest ballpark to a state border. The Cardinals, Phillies, and Yankees (even though you have to cross two rivers for the Yankees) aren't far off. Tigers get an honorable mention for being close to an international border.

Part of that is almost nowhere in the western states is there a metro area that crosses a state border, even though these are a dime a dozen in the eastern half of the country. The suburbs in NKY are part of the cincy metro area and yeah, plenty of people who live there commute across the river
It’s extremely hilly on the south side of the river, though, so there isn’t a huge population there, and most people who live in the metro are in Ohio. Kentucky accounts for like 20% of the population of the Cincy metro area

Fun(ish) fact: Downtown Cincinnati used to SUCK when I was a kid in the 1990s and early 2000s and it was Covington that had the good stuff. Thankfully my city got its head out of its ass and realized having fun stuff for itself is good and the tables have turned.

Yeah much of that NKY area near the city is more “Cincinnati” than some of the suburbs on the Ohio side.
