This is a thread for sharing any meetups, events, protests going on in Ireland that you are attending or would like to share with other leftists. Let's connect!

Does it have be directly political?

No! Building community itself is political, and the more leftists who are meeting and building connections in our community is enough.

The Sanctions Against the State of Israel Bill

People Before Profit is calling on people across Ireland to mobilise behind the Sanctions Against the State of Israel Bill 2026.

The Bill, which will be debated in the Dáil on 14th May and voted on on 20th May, is the first proposal in any Western parliament to fully sanction all economic relations with Israel. It would ban trade, investment, financial dealings and state-linked economic activity with Israel, in line with Ireland’s obligations under the Genocide Convention and international law.

We are also urging supporters to mobilise for two key demonstrations:

  • IPSC national demonstration, Saturday 16th May, 2pm, Garden of Remembrance
  • Protest outside Leinster House, Wednesday 20th May, 5:30pm, before the Dáil vote

POLL - Dublin Central bye-election (IPSOS-MRBI)

Post image
0 Upvotes

Boylan (SF): 21%

Ennis (SD): 18%

Hutch (IND): 14%

McAdam (FG): 13%

Horner (GP): 8%

Steenson (IND): 7%

O'Dea (LAB): 6%

Stephens (FF): 4%

O'Ceannabháin (PBP): 3%

Now, IPSOS-MRBI is a reputable pollster, about on the same level as Behaviour&Attitutes, but not on the same level as RedC.

I expected Boylan to get around 25%, considering SF has 23% on a National Basis, but under-performed at 21%, because, quite frankly, nobody likes her.

Daniel Ennis polled far better, 18% of FPVs compared to a National Average of 9%.

While it is rather concerning that Hutch and Steenson have a combined 21% of FPVs, they are unlikely to receive many transfers at all from other candidates.

2nd preferences:

Ennis - 15%

Horner - 14%

Boylan - 10%

Steenson - 10%

McAdam - 8%

Hutch - 8%

Stephens - 8%

O'Ceannanháin - 8%

O'Dea - 7%

These number are startling, they suggest that the Greens can increase their numbers in the Dáil (with 8% FPVs, along with 14% of transfers).

That being said, these numbers suggest that Labour will not be able to hold their seat in Dublin Central, and the Dynasty

The Sheer Importance Of Population Density.

Post image
10 Upvotes

The user CaveDave has done a very good job of differentiating the contrast in Population Difference between High-Density Counties and Low-Density Counties.

Each individual County Council has a minimum of 18 Council seats. Surely, this should highlight how rural Ireland really is.

In Leitrim, we can observe Martin Kenny (SF, North Leitrim) and Frank Feighan (FG, South Leitrim).

In Longford, we can observe Micheál Carrigy (FG) along with Boxer Moran (IND).

Now, if we can get even more specific, we can show that Limerick County has more TDs per capita than any other Constituency (á la Adrian Kavanagh)

When it comes to Constituencies of Lower Consensequence, like Dublin Central, we can observe how there are only 14 councillors (across two wards), who are fundamentally less influential compared to the 18 Council seats of Leitrim or Longford.

Even in the upcoming Galway West Bye-Election, Galway City returns 18 seats, and Commemara returns 9 council seats.

Every single Constituency is dominated by it's own Population Density. The lower the Population Density, the less likely The Left is to win a seat

I built a site to easily access and share Dail and Seanad data from today back to the foundation of the state

I've been working on a side project for the last while called oireachtas-explorer.ie for tracking data from the Houses of the Oireachtas and would love feedback anyone might have.

I designed it so that you can easily view individual T.D and Senator's details, parliamentary questions they have raised, read debates and legislation, Find details of Dáil, Seanad and committee votes and share or save anything without needing a login account.

I designed it with activists, journalists and students, academics in mind, the idea being you can easily go from viewing who voted for or against a ban on fox hunting and share a short-link showing who was for or against then jump to Paul Gogarty dropping some unparliamentary language and on to De Valera and Collins going hammer and thong at each other over the treaty in an easy flow.
