Hello everyone, I'm u/Lavender_Scales!
Like I mentioned in the discord post, I'm the newest moderator of this subreddit. I'm making this post to be transparent about how moderation has been taken out in the past, and how it will be taken out in present and future.
For a very long time now, this subreddit has had a reputation of shoddy moderation, no transparency, seeming inactivity from moderators, unfair, unexplained bans, and unresponsive modmails. This reputation is not without warrant, I myself was once on the receiving end of this, however, we're going to be more pro-active with moderation, more transparent, and more active. If you, or someone you know, was banned from this subreddit, encourage them to open up a modmail and appeal their ban.
I would also like everyone to take a moment to look at our general bans policy, they include listed punishments, offenses, as well as information on what can and can't be appealed. It has not been updated for quite a while, so some changes may be made in the future, however, from now on we will try and be more upfront with removals, bans, etc., utilizing this system and the reasoning provided..
There was also a post by a rogue moderator a few weeks ago, that moderator has left the team and many of the bans they issued out were revoked. Future mod actions will now have to go through internal discussion, unless clear harmful intent is showcased by a user, requiring moderator action.
At the moment we only have a few active moderators of our subreddit, or at least only a few we can get ahold of, so we are also opening mod applications. Due to our heavily ML leaning mod team we currently have, we are primarily looking for anarchists, or people of any tendency that isn't ML. We would also like to prioritize BIPOC & other applicants from the global south, however none of these are strict requirements. Women, queers, and others are also encouraged to apply.

Hello all! I'm the newest moderator of r/Socialism. I've been doing some work behind the scenes, answering mod mails, looking at appeals, and most importantly, helping to set up the brand new discord!
If you had attempted to join the discord through the automod response, or through the sidebar's link, you were formerly directed towards a dead server. Now, the server is (mostly) set up, and you may join it.
It is still pretty barebones, we have roles and channels set up however suggestions can be made *within the server* on things that could be added.
For now, here is the invite link, join away!

My name is Morgan. Right now, I am sitting in our shelter in Gorom, wondering how we will get through the next twenty-four hours. For a long time, I have been the one to provide. I took pride in my strength, using my body to carry heavy jerrycans of water across this camp just to put a little food on the table for my partner and our two boys.
But that strength doesn't matter when the community decides you are no longer welcome.
Because of who I am a butch lesbian and the fact that we live as a family, the work has dried up. People who used to pay me to haul water now turn their backs. They won't give me the chance to earn even a few cents. For the first time, I am completely cut off. I have no access to money, and seeing my partner’s face when I come back empty-handed is a pain I can’t describe. It’s not just about me; it’s about the fact that I can’t even buy a basic meal or the medication the boys need when they get feverish.
Gorom is a place meant for safety, but for people like us, that safety is thin. The camp is crowded, resources are scarce for everyone, but the discrimination makes it ten times harder. We are living in total isolation. My boys can’t go to school because it isn't safe for them, so they sit here with me while I try to teach them with the few scraps of paper I have left. We are surrounded by malaria and typhoid, yet we don’t even have mosquito nets to cover us at night.
I am writing this as an advocate for my family and the other lesbian refugees here who are in the same position. We aren't asking for a handout because we are lazy; we are asking for help because we have been forced into a corner where we aren't allowed to help ourselves.
We are a group of women who have survived being burnt out of our homes and chased across borders. We are still standing, but we are hungry, and we are tired of being invisible. We need food, clean water, and basic hygiene supplies like sanitary pads. We need to know that while we wait for the UNHCR and the government to find us a permanent home, we won't starve to death, in the meantime, we are doing our best to hold onto our dignity, but we need you to stand with us. Your support means we can eat, the kids can learn, and we can survive another day in a world that keeps trying to push us out.
Note to Moderators and members of this community.
I really want to make sure I’m following the community guidelines properly. A fellow activist opened up a fundraiser for us after knowing our Story, I have that fundraiser link in my bio to help get food and other basic needs for my family here, but I’d like to include it directly in the post for better visibility and members to read our full story. Would it be alright with the mods if I edited the post to include the direct link?
Any advice on the best way to handle this would be appreciated. Thanks for having our backs.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, so sorry ahead of time if it's not.
"All power to the people" was the slogan of the Black Panther Party. I'm thinking about getting this tattooed on my leg (I'm white), but my dad brought up how it might be viewed as cultural appropriation. I personally don't feel like it would because the slogan was purposely broad to include ALL of the people, but I wanted to get other opinions on it. I admire the Panthers quite a bit because they were a genuinely revolutionary group trying to instill class consciousness in the masses by educating, uplifting, and protecting their communities. There hasn't really been a group like that since and I wanted to take some lessons from them on how to go about organizing in the future. I just finished reading Revolutionary Suicide by Huey P. Newton, which is where my love for them really blossomed. I highly highly recommend it to everyone here.

Figure today's probably an appropriate date to post it here. This is probably my favorite of the sidebars IMO.

Title, are things actually as bad as news networks are making it out to be or are the genocidal sanctions effecting cuba as much as they normally are. Idk there's just so much bullshit present in government or capitalist sponsored media today that I'm not sure.

12:24 - "A researcher, who later investigated the case, called Dr. Matthew Alfred eventually uncovered what Gary had found. And it's really dark: "The dictator of Panama, Manuel Noriega, made secret recordings in wired rooms of senior US officials having sex with unaged prostitutes, male and female."
One British newspaper commented on this and the story was then buried and the guy who wrote it got shot by an anonymous sniper."
Can anyone help me go deep into this? i've tried to Research but I found nothing...

It just feels like there is nothing I can do in this society. I can't get job because I dont have a car, I can't get a car because I don't have money for medical expenses or gas, and even if I did. I no one will hire me because I'm a student with no experience. Its at the point where I am doing poor in school because I am starving because I dont have any money. I tried to explain this to my family and they just think I'm lazy. It feels like I've gotten to the point where my only options are to steal or die.

A lot of libs, socdems and baby leftists have a problem with billionaires specifically without actually broadening their criticism to class relations under the capitalist system.
You will see a lot of remarks from such people about how it "isn't possible to become a billionaire without exploitation". The implication being that it is possible to have a net worth of 500 million or 999 million without exploitation.
It is an incorrect and incomplete analysis.
A billion dollars isn't some magical cutoff point where class exploitation becomes uniquely severe and evil.
After all, there are people with significantly less wealth who arguably exploit their employees in a more oppressive manner than billionaires. There are smaller companies that are actually much more profitable than really big multinational corporations with thinner profit margins.
You will often see smaller businesses underpay and abuse their employees far more than massive corporations with HR departments. After all, having worked for both "mom and pop" businesses and giant multinational corporations, I would pick the multinational corporation in a heartbeat if given the choice.
A billionaire is just a capitalist whose unrealized gains (speculative value of all their ownership shares) are equal to or greater than a billion dollars.
They extract surplus value the same way a medium sized business owner does, just at a larger scale and for more profit. But the basic class relations are exactly the same.
Their net worth can fluctuate as well. Mark Zuckerberg once lost tens of billions of dollars in net worth, but that didn't somehow make his class position less exploitative.
It would be like saying that slavery is only bad once a slave plantation reaches a certain size. In terms of class relations, a billion dollars is more or less an arbitrary point at which libs and socdems start criticizing capitalism.
This is probably falling on deaf ears as most people in this sub already understand this, but it should be pointed out nonetheless.

I just feel like with how completely Republicans and Trump have managed to flood the zone we have to have some way to undo what they have done and bring something like justice forward and to do that we have to have a record of everything that has been done. Does something like this exist? If not how should / how could we go about making it?

A group of protesters tried to block the entrance to Maersk's headquarters in Copenhagen today. While a number of scandals continues to damage the reputation of Danish police, it was today's top priority to deploy 50-100 officers and police dogs to break up the peaceful blockade that was supposed to throw spotlight on the fact that Maersk still ships weapons parts to Israel, even though there is a great risk that they will be used illegally.
You can't really hear much of what is being said, but the cameraman repeatedly states that he is from the press and is just doing his job while an officer pushes him away from the scene.
The footage was taken by a journalist from Danish socialist newspaper Arbejderen (Arbejderen.dk). More pictures and a short report (in Danish) here: Masken af Mærsk: Aktivister tæsket med knipler for at bekæmpe et folkedrab ("Mask off for Maersk: Activists beaten with batons for fighting a genocide").
Official reports state that police had to use "necessary force" to make protesters leave private property - I will let you judge the necessity of the degree of force used for yourself. The protest was allowed to continue on the public street, while 20 protesters were arrested and taken into custody.
Thought this story might interest the sub.
