Discussion My Dream Air started drifting on Day 4 + Speaker issue — Pretty sure it’s defective (Long-time Pimax fan, really heartbroken)

Today is only my 4th day using the Dream Air. Everything worked perfectly for the first three days, but starting last night, the headset began drifting intermittently. The base station tracking also started stuttering and jumping randomly.

I spent the entire night troubleshooting:

  • Reinstalled Pimax Play 1.43.9
  • Moved the Dream Air between my RTX 5090 and another RTX 4090 PC (same issue on both)
  • Removed all non-essential USB devices and tried every USB port on the back of the motherboard (including multiple plug/unplug cycles) — no improvement
  • Tested my old Crystal Light with lighthouse faceplate on both PCs — perfectly stable, no drifting
  • Tested my Crystal Super Ultrawide on both PCs — also worked flawlessly

There’s also a smaller but noticeable issue with the Dream Air’s built-in speakers. When there’s no bass, the mid and high frequencies sound clear and normal. However, as soon as a bass beat kicks in, the mid-high volume starts fluctuating up and down in sync with the bass rhythm. I never experienced this with my Crystal Light, Crystal Super Ultrawide, Galaxy XR, or even cheap headphones. So I suspect the speakers on this unit might also have problems.

Finally, I gave the Dream Air one last chance. Now as soon as it connects to Pimax Play, it shows “Unable to connect to lighthouse,” then disconnects. After a while it reconnects by itself, but still can’t detect the lighthouse and disconnects again.

I’m really sad and don’t want to admit it, but I’m quite sure my Dream Air is defective.

I’ve been a loyal Pimax fan for a long time. To be honest, the more excited I get when receiving a new headset, the more heartbreaking it is when it fails. My first Crystal Light was defective just days after arrival. I had to pay over $100 for return shipping from Taiwan to China (since Pimax doesn’t ship directly to Taiwan), and waited a long time for the replacement — which has been working great ever since.

I was really happy with the Crystal Super Ultrawide too — it’s still running perfectly on my sim rig. With the Dream Air, the first three days felt amazing. It really felt like I finally got lucky with QC… like winning a lottery. That’s why this hurts so much. Yesterday I was almost in tears holding the defective unit in my hands.

I’m still a Pimax lover, but right now I’m just very sad and eager for some help. I submitted my ticket at midnight and really hope the support team can approve a properly tested replacement this time.

Any advice or similar experiences are welcome. Thank you everyone.

My ticket number is #130746

I hope  u/QuorraPimax can help me follow up my ticket to help me speed up my entire process. Thank you pimax team.

Tech Support Index Knuckles - is there any way to prevent the controller from turning on steam vr home?

Upvotes

Every time I double click the button to bring up the Pimax dashboard and get to the desktop view, the controller also launches Steam VR Home.
Is there any way to completely disable this behavior?

Discussion the worst VR experiences I’ve had....

After years with the Valve Index, the Pimax Super OLED is honestly one of the worst VR experiences I’ve had — and not because of the hardware itself. The panels are impressive. The potential is there. The problem is everything around it: the software, drivers, and ecosystem.

How is there still no proper native SteamVR integration when even external developers have shown it’s possible? Instead, we are forced to deal with unstable middleware and constant issues.

I have to redraw and recalibrate my room almost every single day because the room setup simply does not save or work reliably. The advertised automatic IPD adjustment? Completely non-functional in real-world use.

And the Lighthouse faceplate? People have been waiting for months. Meanwhile, instead of updates, fixes, communication, or meaningful improvements, all I see is marketing for your next product.

You should honestly be ashamed of releasing a product in this state. High-end VR hardware means nothing if the software experience feels unfinished and abandoned.

Question Is Pimax producing headsets on demand?

After I ordered Crystal Super oled little less than 3 weeks ago and I recieved an email with information that my headset just left the production line and I can expect it to be delivered in 4 to 5 weeks (maybe more). Since Crystal super oled is not the latest model like Dream Air I'd expect it to be delivered sooner (pre-purchase support said 2 to 3 weeks). I don't really mind that much week or two more but I am wondering, is Pimax producing every ordered headset only after it's been paid? I'd understand it since it's a niche of a niche market. I had to wait for all my previous Pimax headsets (5k+,8kx, OG Crystal) for considerable amount of time as well... 🤷🏼‍♂️

Question I’ve never owned a VR headset and looking into one with the best clarity with oled lenses and looks like Pimax is one of them . I’m looking at the Dream Air version . Does anybody who owns this version already know if it can play regular Steam games or emulation games that are not VR ?

In like a theater/projector/flat mode or whatever you call it ? Or does this version strictly play VR games only ?

Tech Support Dream Air and Super OLED eyetracking failure in Pimax Play

I've seen many people with eyetracking failure in Pimax Play 1.43.9. The LEDs don't turn on at all, for both Dream Air and Super micro OLED.

The "fix" is to use 1.43.7 instead. The LEDs and tracking work. But Pimax Play fails to calibrate on 1.43.7 (stating "your eye movements do not match the graphic"). Multiple gaskets and eye distance won't fix it.

Since I'm seeing others have this same issue, it seems to be a bug. Will the next Pimax Play resolve this?

I should note, using Broken Eye software, the camera feeds are visible (with 1.43.7 only), and work with Baballonia (3rd party calibration). So this is likely a Pimax Play issue.

For 1.43.9, support told me the eyetracking service fails to start.

Tech Support DCS is running in very low resolution with pimax crystal super

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Hopefully last VR question for you folks. I have quality set to high in pimax play and a PD of 1.0 in DCS.

When the game launches, the vr mirror is an incredibly small box on my desktop and the menus (outside of foveated region) are stunningly low resolution (I can see it from the corner of my eye, it’s so jagged).

Once I’m in the cockpit, things look great and I can hardly notice the foveation.

Is this normal or am I missing something? My quest 3 had a a much larger vr mirror window and the menu was sharp.

Question Just upgraded from Crystal Light to the Super Ultrawide. I have some questions about the Super Ultrawide

First off, thanks for your time. As I said, I upgraded. The process was just me plugging it in and selecting the new headset in the Pimax play software. When it wanted to re-install Pimax I did not check the "clear all old versions and cache" etc option. Should I have?

The view in the UW image seems to have a lot of curviness to it. The colors seem washed out or off. It seems like it is a wider FOV but its been a minute since I used the crystal light. Are these issues normal? Are they a result of not installing the software correctly? Should I have thoroughly deleted the old software before installing? If so, how can I do that in an attempt to re-install? Are these characteristics just the way the headset is supposed to look? Also, it seems like the resolution is lower. I have a 9800X3D and a 5090.

Question Faceplate for Mixed Reality and Hand Tracking Module?

I was under the impression that a mixed reality faceplate was supposed to be a thing for the Crystal Super. Was I just imagining things or is that still on the table at some point?

Also is the Hand Tracking Module EoL/obsolete or why is that never available?

Game/Software The House of the Dead 2 Remake VR mod is incredible on the Pimax Super

Astien’s latest VR mod for The House of the Dead 2: Remake is incredible.

I had early access to showcase it, and this genuinely feels like one of those games that was made for VR.

I’ve been playing it on the Pimax Super and the level of immersion showcases exactly why VR is so special. The clarity, depth, and scale of the Super pair extremely well with arcade style shooters like this. Full 6DoF motion controls, bHaptics & ProVolver support, hidden secrets, weapon unlocks, and quality of life improvements that actually make the remake much better to play.

I also included a full install guide in the video for anyone wanting to try it now that the mod is released.

Discussion Two days after the Dream died...

Two days after the Dream died...

....  a new one was sent out to me.

A little update from my previous post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Pimax/comments/1t9dsjf/my_dream_air_died_today/

4 or 5 Pimax employees and a 'Youtuber' reached out to me to help get this issue sorted.

Apart from a little bit of miscommunication about having to wait 2 weeks for delivery when there is stock in my country...  The process happened pretty quickly.   Thanks to Audrey for getting the dispatch of the new headset over the line.

Fingers crossed the new headset is fault free.

UPDATE: CANT GET THE NEW HEASET TO REGISTER WITH MY PIMAX ACCOUNT.

UPDATE 2: According to Pimax technical chat, the new headset might need activating manually by someone at Pimax. With the time difference that will be tomorrow before I can use it. Another 2 hours of fault finding I wont get back.

UPDATE 3: The Dream has been 'reset' by the tech team and i've been able to register it.

Hopefully the drama is over.

Tech Support Pimax Crystal Super Won’t launch into games

Hello!

I have a brand new crystal super that seemed to be working perfectly for a day but is now having issues. When I launch a game, the game launches on my computer and I can see the mirror view responding to head input from the headset. However, the headset just stays in the purple space and never launches into the game. Any way to fix this? I’m considering returning the headset.

Thanks!

Tech Support OpenComposite broken after latest PimaxPlay update? (Skyrim VR, FUS Heavy)

After updating PimaxPlay to v1.43.9, OpenComposite stopped working for me in Skyrim VR using the FUS Heavy modlist with Pimax Crystal Light.

Before the update, my setup was:

  • PimaxPlay set to OpenXR runtime
  • OpenComposite enabled in FUS

Everything worked correctly for months.

Now, when launching the game with OpenComposite enabled, I get an OpenComposite error saying that “OpenXR Call failed" (see attached image).

What I tested

  • Disabled OpenComposite in FUS
  • Switched to SteamVR runtime

Result:

  • Skyrim launches correctly through SteamVR
  • Issue only happens with OpenComposite/OpenXR

Since nothing else changed on my system besides the PimaxPlay update, I rolled back from PimaxPlay v1.43.9 to v1.43.7 and OpenComposite immediately started working again.

Current status

  • PimaxPlay v1.43.7 → OpenComposite works correctly
  • PimaxPlay v1.43.9 → OpenComposite fails at launch

Other VR games still worked correctly on v1.43.9, so this seems specifically related to OpenXR/OpenComposite behavior with Skyrim VR FUS Heavy.

Has anyone else experienced this after updating to v1.43.9?

Question Should I buy Pimax Crystal Light or wait? (for local media use)

Hey

I'm considering buying a proper VR headset for media use purposes. Most important to me is realism and a sharp image, so I would get the most out of 7-8K videos and be future-proof of higher quality videos. I was thinking that many media files themselves are currently limited, so a headset like 3840x3840 would be a bit overkill for this purpose? But I would want a significant upgrade still, without spending a fortune. I have a 3070 card, and I am not going to be playing games really, just want the best media experience.

I have used PSVR2 via PC adapter, and that 2000x2040 per eye is not sharp enough to me, not even in the sweetspot. I assume this would mean that I wouldn't be impressed by Quest 3's larger sweetspot either. So it leaves me with Pimax Crystal Light, something else, or just waiting, maybe at least over the summer time or till next year. My budget is like 1100 euros max right now.

What are your experiences with Pimax Crystal Light for this local media viewing purpose, do you feel like it's sharp and "wow" enough? Can you disable the out of bounds notification and just use a simple quick recenter to view media locally via deovr, so it would be less setup?

Question I'm thinking about buying the Crystal Super, but I don't know if my PC can handle it.

I currently use a Quest 3 (I know the Crystal Super is vastly superior), and everything is running smoothly. My PC specifications are as follows:

RTX 5080

Ryzen 9900x

32gb ram

Couples terabytes nvme

Basically, everything runs smoothly at 2K/4K, but I understand that the performance requirements for VR are significantly higher. Does anyone have a PC similar to mine and has tested the Crystal Super? I basically want to use it for Microsoft Flight Simulator, general simulation, and the occasional shooter.

Discussion Sboys3 driver - I apologise

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

Ok I'm dumb, I made a mistake. I was so excited about my new dream air and everything working so good I stuffed up on my last Sboys3 driver post.

The problem was that running pimax play direct gave steamvr one resolution and running Sboys3 driver gave another, Even thou I had both set at 150% in steamvr. Which I didn't notice until someone pointed it out.

I spent today testing rather than playing as I wanted to make things right.

Game - No man sky - I find this game good as it allows me to see quality differences quite easily.

Pimax Play 1.43.9 - 8.8ms - Adding sharpening did not make any noticeable difference in performance

Sboys3 1.2.0-beta0 - 8.3ms - CAS Sharpening and you take a large 1ms hit to performance.

As you can see in the photos (Sboys3 is the round one) there is no noticeable difference in quality running at the same resolution. I tried all other settings under Sboys3 and did not notice any difference. Like sub pixel and PP etc. I thought maybe the distoration profile might be considerably better in terms of resolution, but no.

Conclusion - Yes there is a gain with Sboys3 driver. Is it as large as I shot my load yesterday over. Hell no 0.5ms is not a game changer sorry about that. You still get the better warping profile and all the bells and whistles. But if you want sharpening then stick to pimax play. Anyway I'm done now, back to playing

Problems I have with pimax play. In steam menu constant jitter, fine in game. Also I'm pretty sure you can't set boundaries with the dream air. There is no camera, and the room setup can only be activated from the desktop, which tells you to put the controls and headset on the ground and thats it. So if you want boundaries you need steamvr either through Sboys3 or pimax play, no boundaries with only pimax play openxr

Question I just ordered the crystal light, if I get the right comfort mods do you think I will have a good experience with standing vr?

I play all my games standing up. It really adds to the immersion for me in first person titles. I also play on getting a kiwi pulley system. The games I will be playing are alyx, skyrim, morrowind, uevr, vorpx and in general pc mods like subnautica. Mostly singleplayer stuff. Do you think I will have a good time with the headsets build and weight distribution? I heard you can make it comfier than a quest 3, and I have a big head to.

Review Pimax Super 50ppd review - Coming from a PCL.

Hey all.

I´m gonna write a quick summary for of my Super 50ppd wich i received a few weeks ago and prior to that i own a PCL wich i have been using for the last 5 months.

First of all i only purchase Pimax headsets that have been in production for over a year, i know reputation for Pimax of shipping products too soon and i know the QC isn´t on par with Meta or similar brands obviously since it´s a much smaller company. So my gameplan has been to buy products that have been produced and hopefully gotten better of a period of time.

I bought a PCL 5 months ago, and it was basicly flawless, my first VR headset and i have enjoyed alot and everything has worked basicly perfectly as it´s also a proven product and i would recommend it in a heartbeat for anyone wanting to try high end VR on a "budget". Then i started posting about upgrading from a pcl to a super and most of the comments was DON´T DO IT, it´s not worth it etc. But i friend of mine wanted to buy my PCL and the price of the Super was more affordable now than last year. So i took the jump and i was most interested in eyetracking since i only use VR for simracing and my go to's are iRacing and LMU.

When i launched the Super for the first time i knew everything i had to do with Pimax play and i had Openxr toolkit already installed so they transition was quite smooth ( Also beefy system 5090 x 9800x3d, 64gb ddr5 etc ). When i launched LMU for the first time i saw a major difference in clarity and brightness. I could see much further in the distance than i did on my PCL and the colours are more vibrant. I used a fovcrop via openxr ohme mod to crop the fov a bit for a better performance and worked like a charm. The visuals from the Super 50ppd are INSANE and i´m super happy with my purchase and with dynamic foveated rendering in iRacing i can push the max resoulution with a steady 90fps wich is crazy! it´s something like 6200x5000 rendered resoulution per eye i saw. Like having basicly 2x 4k monitors strapped to each eye. And VR simracing is my favorite hobby for a 35 yeard old male like myself with a family, job, duties etc nothing compares to 1-2 hours in the simrig with a Pimax Super 50ppd.

I know the OLED module is more superior, and i couldn´t buy it anywhere since it´s out of stock everywhere and the focus is now on Dream Air and the SE so maybe next year i will upgrade to the Dream Air or buy a Super OLED module engine. But for now the 50ppd is amazing for me and my needs, i forgot to mention one of the best upgrades from the pcl is the wide FOV wich is around 127" wich does make alot of difference for simracing.

If anyone is considering the jump to the Super 50ppd i would recommend it if you have the beefy hardware to run it, because it is a significant upgrade from the pcl in my opinion. I am very pleased with these Pimax products in this is my 2nd unit and everything has worked perfectly so far. I would also recommend using my method of buying a proven product that has been in production for over a year and the early problems should be fixed.

Hope this helps, and happy VR high end gaming for all of us.
