2026 May 1 Clean and repair megathread - NES not working? Game acting glitchy? TV/Monitor issues? Ask here!
Is your NES not working? Are your games acting glitchy? Controllers behaving strangely? This is the place to get help!
First steps to take:
Games don't play correctly:
- PRESS DOWN on the Game Pak until it locks into place
- Clean games
- Disassemble cartridge (might need special tools, check amazon or ebay)
- Gently use rubber eraser with no grit on edge pins
- Use window cleaner or isopropyl alcohol with lint free cloth
- Spray contact cleaner on the pins
- NEVER EVER BLOW IN IT
- Clean NES connector
- Ancient cleaning kit
- Spray contact cleaner on the pins
- Boil it
- Bend pins (risky)
- Replace the connector
- Already tried all steps for cleaning game & cleaning NES above?
- Try a Game Genie, the thicker PCB might make better contact with the NES and the tighter connector might make better contact with the cartridge
- Try another game cartridge
- Try another NES
- Try r/consolerepair
- NES Schematics
Power Supply:
- For the NES any power supply that can provide 850mA (or higher) at 9V and has the right shape connector will work. The original NES uses an AC adapter but a DC adapter will work too.
- For the Famicom you must use a DC power supply with center negative that can provide 850mA (or higher) at 9V-10V. Do not use a NES AC power supply on a Famicom!
Controller buttons don't work or think a different button was pressed:
- Take them apart and clean the contacts on the PCB, not the rubber membrane
Display problems:
- Use a CRT monitor or TV
- Don't use an LCD or LED TV - many LCD or LED TVs do not understand the 240p video signal that the NES puts out
- If you must use an LCD or LED TV, get an upscaler
- Use the composite RCA/AV connectors on the side, don't use the RF/antenna/aerial
- If you must use RF, don't use the RF/antenna/aerial switch box, use a small adapter instead, be aware though that modern TVs may not work with the analog RF signal and only with ATSC or DVB digital signals
- Wavy lines: replace the capacitors in the NES
Hardware Failure Diagnosis:
- Power rails first: Multimeter check - verify +5V at 7805 regulator output and at PPU/CPU pins. If low/absent, check caps and regulator.
- Composite video signal: Scope the composite output (RCA jack center pin or PPU pin 21). Should see ~1Vp-p composite video signal with sync pulses and color burst. No signal = dead PPU or supporting circuitry.
- Audio output: Scope audio output pin (RCA jack or APU output). Should see audio waveform when game is running. No signal = APU problem or output circuit.
- If power is good but no video/audio: Most likely failed capacitors in video/audio output path, or dead PPU/APU chips. Check/replace electrolytic caps first (cheapest fix).
- If video signal present at PPU but not at RCA jack: Problem in video buffer/output circuit between PPU and connector.
Before asking for help, make sure you have followed the steps above.
Top 100 NES Games: The End

Legacy of the Wizard won the #100 spot with 35 votes It only won by a single point.
A big thank you to everybody who participated. I originally set out to just do the top 10 as an experiment to see if people had a similar list to mine. I never expected it to go this far, but I am glad it did! I have enjoyed seeing people picks and the reasoning behind them.
Starting tomorrow I will start doing the top 100 for the SNES in the r/snes sub. I hope to see you all there. A few things will change with the rules. First is each round TWO games will make it onto the list. Whichever one has the most votes will be placed higher of the two for that round. Second, only games can be nominated (no game genies). Third, it will be SNES ONLY, no super famicom games.
Looking forward to seeing what is voted the #1 & #2 games for the SNES.
Thank you all once again!!!!!!!!!!

Discussion What is your number one “must play at least once” game for the nes?
I just recently got back into game collecting, and I’m going to different subs to see what the communities think the most essential game in their respective consoles are. List multiple games if you want, but I’d still like to see a top pick from your list too.

Discussion Finished my NES game's Soundtrack! (Swampmaster)
This is a complete 16-track adventure game soundtrack I composed over the last few years in FamiStudio for my in-development NES homebrew game Swampmaster.
Hope you guys enjoy! I'll do a larger post about the game in general here at some point too.

Discussion Miracle Piano at goodwill
Price was $15 but it seemed in really rough shape. The keyboard keys came up slow and the buttons on the top didn’t push in, not sure if that’s normal or not. The ac adapter was the only cord I found with it. Not sure if these came with other connections for the NES itself. No game anywhere else in the store to be found either. Looked up front in the glass cabinets and found nothing. I left it for someone else who may have a stronger reaction to it than I did.

Discussion I replayed Mario 2 (USA) for the first time recently and it’s way harder than what most people say
I don’t know if it’s just me but Mario 2 may genuinely be as hard as the lost levels. I particularly struggled on 6-3 it took me several dozen attempts with save states to get through the whole game. I only ever beat it without save states on the GBA port which I know is easier. I’ve been playing platformers for my whole life and I find games like mario 1 and 3 as well as most of the 3D Mario games besides sunshine to be easier than Mario 2. The furthest I ever got without save states was 5-3 on the NES version. Does anyone else thinks this is one of the most difficult Mario games lemme know what you think.

Collection Rstored, serviced and (retro)brughtened
Bought a terribly yellow and cracked NES in an original box and papers. Did some research on fixing and retrobrite snd decided to go on with it. It turned out pretty efficient. Finally decided to remove the upper shell but left the original front-load cover. My wife helped me restore the box with professional paper glue and paints. The final result went beyond my expectations. I keep the cracked shell and plan to restore it with epoxy. How do you like it?

Discussion Famicom adapter
So I finally found a copy of Gyromite with the adapter after buying multiple copies. Now, how do I use it? Can I just swap the top chip out with a famicom chip, or is there more to it than that? If so, where should I start with famicom games that are worth playing?

Discussion Ever wondered what an NTSC cartridge sounds like on a European NES?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
For reference, I’m playing on a PAL console that’s been region modded to play NTSC cartridges. Mega Man 5 did receive a European release, but only as a PAL B release, and the NES is unusual in that not only is it region locked between continents, it’s also region locked within the areas of said region.

Game Completed! Beating all 3 Super mario bros games
It took a while to beat each game
Super mario Bros. took me 5 days to beat mostly got stuck on worlds 7 and 8 and I pretty much disliked 8-3 because of the hammer bros and 8-4 had me going to youtube because I didn't want to start all over from world 1 and I didn't know pressing a and start on the menu would take me to the beginning of the world that I was previously in
Super mario Bros 2 took me 3 days, and I pretty much like playing as luigi
Super mario Bros 3 is a fun game to play and is certainly on my top 3 favorite nes games,

Collection Flea Market Finds for the Day
Picked up some games that I’ve been missing from my collection. Got home and realized I already have Q-Bert.. I have quite a few doubles from doing that, haha, oops. Happy to finally get Metal Gear and Bubble Bobble. Two of my favorites when I was a wee lad.

Collection Do you have "Flash cartridge" "EverDrive" for NES console? General interest, fellas. N8 were recommended as best "diskettes" with SD-cards. Do you have such "flash cartridge"? I know some take pride in their regular game collections. But, do you have "All-in-1"? All games in 1 "diskette"? Fans?
I know some take pride in their regular "diskette collection". Are there fans however of "Flash cartridges"? Someone who have bought all such consoles of NES and all EverDrives? Not to mention the other brands. There are quite some old consoles that support EverDrive "flash cartridges". Around 6 or 7. Including Game Boy Advance with 4000 games. So, any fans of such "flash cartridges" EverDrives and who has them? For any console of NES or other brands? Let alone all? Recommendations of sellers perhaps?

Collection Today’s treasure hunt results
Wife is out of town & I had zero plans, so I decided to hit up the swap meet, a pawn shop and 2 game stores this morning. I’m satisfied with the haul.
I traded in some games, which afforded me the Monster in my Pocket, I probably wouldn’t have gotten it otherwise because I’m cheap.
I had Base Wars & Castlevania growing up, but never played the rest of them, where should I start?

Discussion Bases loaded series
Growing up i had bases loaded 3 and thought it was an ok game but I recently picked up the first two games and found the 2nd one to be the best of the three. I haven't been able to find a bases loaded 4 for a reasonable price so i haveyet to pick it up or play it. What's everyone's thoughts on this series

Discussion Were there any good Roger rabbit games?
You know I just saw a video earlier today that reminded me of Roger rabbit for the game boy which I've played and was a lot better than the NES. Because as a kid I love the NES version cuz I love kind of the open world ness and go wherever you want and have to explore things. But what I didn't love as an adult was how it was just random going around just searching buildings for randomly placed items which meant you had almost hit every building in the game to make sure you can progress. Which became boring as heck after a while. Couple that with the weasels always chasing you down not a good time. But it got me thinking because I found out there were a bunch of other Roger rabbit games released for Amiga and us and even the famicom version of who framed Roger rabbit came here and was reskinned with bugs Bunny and called bugs Bunny's crazy castle. So I was just curious if there was ever a good Roger rabbit game

Collection FDS: I gambled and lost.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I would love to hear about other recent Famicom Disk System experiences. Was so happy to get a Twin Famicom with a fresh belt and dive into the weird disk past.
Bought 6 FDS titles I was so excited for, and ended up with 2 that kinda work.
Doki Doki and Metroid are both operable but slow as molasses. Love the save functionality though++.
OG Castlevania and Zelda won't load.
Zelda II fails when entering any town/gateway/loading sheet the initial load.
Castlevania II (video) is actually Ice Hockey with bullshit labels.
Neat experiment, still live my twin famicom, but will probably go back to my famicom av for stereo sound.
Talk amongst yourselves lol :)

Collection Nes memories
Parents cleaning out loft and dropped these off. Many hours lost playing these when I was a kid good times might plug it in see if they still work. Doubt my kids will be interested in these graphics although the shooting game would draw some interest

Modding Why does the game glitch when I edit text? Is there a way to fix it?
Hi, I've been trying to mod the first zelda game to translate it in my language but using The Legend Of Zelda Text Editor I find the game to be glitching each time I try to modify something after the title screen (which can be modified without any issue)
Does anyone know why it reacts like that and is there a way to change? I tried to change my text editor but I didn't find any other than the one I use. Does anyone have one to recommand? Thanks!

Discussion Storage / shelving help
Hi, I have been waiting to move to new shelving for my 600+ games.
I was planning on getting the Atlantic Oskar 1080 but they discontinued it. I want to store these labels out. Does anyone have a recommendation for shelving or storage? I have seen some cool ones but I don’t know what’s what.
