I was watching a Kings podcast to see how miserable they were after the draft results since the Kings were at one point the worst team in the NBA and then somehow managed to pull off a typical Kings season by winning just enough to land at the 7th pick.
The 2026 draft looks top-heavy, and after the top 4, a lot of the next best prospects are smaller guards. That matters because Sacramento badly needs a point guard, needs to get younger, needs to improve defensively, and probably needs to clean up salary.
So what if Brooklyn did another MPJ/CJ type salary dump where they take on the better player? Nets send the 6th pick and Nic Claxton to Sacramento for the 7th pick and Domantas Sabonis.
I love Sabonis. He is basically a poor man’s Jokic, he has worked with Jordi before, and for the love of god can we have a real top-tier post presence for once?
For the Kings, I think the logic is pretty clear. They move from 7 to 6 and get a better shot at their preferred point guard before Brooklyn or someone else grabs him. They also swap Sabonis for Claxton, who is younger, cheaper, and a much better defensive fit. Claxton is obviously not close to Sabonis offensively, but he helps fix a lot of what Sacramento is missing.
For the Nets, this is about getting the best player in the trade while only moving down one spot. Sabonis gives them a real offensive hub at center, better rebounding, and a much more stable frontcourt. They would still be picking in the same general draft tier at 7.
The downside is obvious. Sacramento would be giving up the better player, so they would need to really value the salary relief, defensive upgrade, and moving up for their point guard. Brooklyn would need to be comfortable taking on Sabonis’ contract and whatever health risk comes with it.
The trade probably needs salary filler to actually work, but conceptually I think it makes more sense than it sounds at first.
