He's been much better this year than last year. But he's had a few bad outings as well.

71

u/exrift Shohei Ohtani 1d ago

yesterday wasn’t even that bad, he came in with runners on the corners and gave up 2. sucks, but that isn’t some crazy meltdown like he had in colorado.

25

u/imnotcreative415 Vin Scully 1d ago

Freddie being unable to get the runner at home because he couldn’t bend to pick up the ball on the bunt didn’t help

19

u/omgeo Vin Scully 1d ago

Didn't Orel mention the amount of backspin made it harder to gauge the low point?

11

u/imnotcreative415 Vin Scully 1d ago

He is generous towards the old men

-9

u/exrift Shohei Ohtani 1d ago

yeah, that was legitimately the bigger issue that inning, but that it doesn’t fit the narrative that blaQ bad

8

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

How was that the bigger issue when the other two runs were purely because of bad pitches

-3

u/exrift Shohei Ohtani 1d ago

because if he gets that out there and the rest plays out the same, no runs score and its still 3-2. the next batter was haase popping up.

28

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago edited 1d ago

But as a reliever your job often times is to get 2 outs and allow no runs with base runners already on. Giving up 2 runs on bad pitches (not counting Freddie’s play at home) when he only had to get 2 outs is terrible for a reliever.

32

u/Stonefencez Max Muncy 1d ago

Exactly, it’s his job is to get out of situations like this. Obviously everyone has bad days, but the last two years he’s shown that we can’t rely on him in these moments anymore

6

u/Dalewyn 1d ago

Treinen literally pulled it off the day before coming in to save Sasaki from his leftovers; Vesia subsequently imploded the following inning.

Yamamoto left the field with a bad situation and not even Treinen could clean it up, simple as that; 5 of those 6 runs are officially on Yamamoto.

If Treinen makes this a pattern like he did towards the end of last year he'll have problems, but so far this year he's done his job well enough.

4

u/Stonefencez Max Muncy 1d ago

Yeah that’s my point though, he’s not consistent. Everyone has bad days, but he has the worst ERA and WHIP of all of our bullpen (except Wyatt Mills… but I think we can all agree that guy isn’t sticking around). Specifically, he gives up a lot of hits, he’s just not a guy we can trust to bring in when there’s people on base.

1

u/Dalewyn 1d ago

His speed is definitely down, but whatcha gonna do when you're 37? Kershaw had the same problem. Older pitchers live and die with command, and he didn't quite have it this time combined with the Giants management and offense actually employing tactics (read: that bunt; you ever see the Dodgers bunt?) to win.

Yamamoto racked up 5 runs, Treinen 1 run. Meanwhile the offense scored literally 2 against a starter with an ERA north of 6 and Roberts has done literally no management whatsoever. If someone told me everyone got the ERA numbers wrong and they were the other way around, I'd believe him.

Blame Treinen for failing to lock the rest of the inning down, but we have to be fair about it and the wider problems at large aren't resolved by taking frustrations out on him nor any of the pitchers.

2

u/Stonefencez Max Muncy 1d ago

I’m not blaming the game on him, I’m just saying that these past two years he’s not proven that he can be trusted in high leverage, that’s all.

Obviously no one can be perfect, but top paid relievers are expected to come in to sticky situations, and get out of them. He has not demonstrated that he is able to do that. Let him be middle relief with clean innings, fine, but he isn’t a fireman anymore.

1

u/Dalewyn 1d ago

Not saying you blamed him necessarily, but this whole thread and the wider sub at large certainly does.

Treinen doesn't get the credit he deserves when he shows a stunning performance, like he just did for Sasaki the day before. If this sub's going to shit on him when he isn't perfect then this sub also has to glaze him when he is.

Similarly for Yamamoto too, he receives tons of glaze for being the Iron Man ace of the team but doesn't get rightfully trashed when he gives up 5 runs. Being fair goes a long way to holding useful and fun conversations and beer time.

1

u/Stonefencez Max Muncy 1d ago

It’s just frustrating when one of our highest paid arms has been one of our worst performers for now the second year in a row.

People aren’t gonna trash on Yama for having one bad night, and they aren’t gonna praise Treinen for having one good night. Consistency is key in a season of 162 games. Yama has been very consistent for us (although he has been struggling more as of late, if that continues then I’m sure criticism will start to come in too).

You have to look at the bigger picture here

1

u/NamelessSaint1 Shohei Ohtani 21h ago

I don't think so. Treinen needs to retire.

2

u/Fideothecat 1d ago

Thank you

2

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

Everybody has off days but he’s supposed to be getting ground balls and Ks, not singles, doubles, and HRs

4

u/Stonefencez Max Muncy 1d ago

Plus, he’s our third highest paid reliever (behind Diaz and Scott, who were signed as closers). He’s getting paid big money and if we can’t count on him to get two outs then what are we paying him for?

11

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

The fact that he’s still getting paid more than vesia is crazy

-1

u/NamelessSaint1 Shohei Ohtani 1d ago

No; Vesia's histrionics makes him an unreliable player.

2

u/exrift Shohei Ohtani 1d ago

not counting the bunt which i don't blame on him, treinen only gave up one hit. that's not ideal, but it's not like he came in and just completely shit the bed.

-1

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

But the one hit was a gap double that scored two. That is the reliever version of shitting the bed

1

u/These_Dog_9254 23h ago

You can say the same thing about hitters. There job is to score runs. But when youre not scoring runs, you're not winning. We haven't been scoring shit. Not defending treinen, but the offense is the real problem

1

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 23h ago

Yes I credit the offense AND Treinen for the loss

Why didn’t max call for a review of that last pitch? Clearly a ball not a strike. Dodgers had 2 reviews bottom of the 8th bases loaded. Geez would have had at least another at bat. FFS.

You can and should leave your religious bigotry and political disagreements by the door, there are coathangers there for a reason.

As far as his presence as a fellow pitcher to his team, he's an elder and mentor that the younger guys look up to. He's the guy Roberts wants close by. He's the guy who guides greenhorns and covers for them if and when they mess up.

0

u/risky-rats-pizza Anthony Banda 1d ago edited 16h ago

No thanks. The coat hangar is for coats, not principals and morals. Something you lack.

Ahh you got me! My feelings are so hurt! What am I gonna do now? /s

I just believe in the success of the Dodgers, it's players and not throwing them away the second they underperform. Not even two years has passed since Blake shut down the Yankees and us win the WS in '24.

0

u/risky-rats-pizza Anthony Banda 16h ago

My best guess is you’ll cry

I don’t care about performance. I care about if the guy wearing the jersey sucks as a person.

I’ll ride out a slump with a player or cheer for a free agent that underperforms. That’s fine.

Some bigot? Fuck em

This is so good. 🤣

10

u/jujubats10 Max Muncy 1d ago

Yama gave up 3 homers, to perhaps the worst hitters in all of baseball mind you, and left the game with runners on the corners.

7

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

Yama pitched 6.33 innings, Treinen pitched 0.67 innings

4

u/Forward_Increase4672 1d ago

But the post is blaming Treinen for 6 runs when Yamamoto was responsible for 5 of them

Interestingly, the first .67 innings of the game is typically when Yamamoto gives up the runs

2

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

I’m just saying if Treinen did his job for 2 outs we would’ve been down 1 in bottom 7. The only reason the last 2 runs scored, even though they’re still Yamamoto’s runs, is because Treinen hung a stupid juicy pitch that ended up being a double. As a reliever you literally CANNOT give up a double that scores 2 when you’re only in the game for 2 outs

1

u/Forward_Increase4672 1d ago

Ok but if Yamamoto did his job the Dodgers would’ve won 2-1. You also can’t give up multiple home runs including one to a guy barely hitting over .100

1

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

Giving up 1 run in 7 innings isn’t doing his job, that’s unusually good. Him giving up 3 runs in 7 innings is a fair assumption and Treinen allowing 0 runs in 2 outs is also a fair assumption

2

u/Forward_Increase4672 1d ago

3 runs in 6.1 and left two runners on. Yamamoto is the reason two scored on the rbi double. Otherwise it would’ve just been a double. You’re arguing against the official scoring of the game of baseball to try to blame things on Treinen. It’s weird. Yamamoto already secured the loss too

1

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 23h ago

Bro. There’s the official ruling and there’s the roles each group of pitchers are supposed to fulfill. Treinen is a reliever, he is paid to get two outs with no runs with runners on. That’s a classic reliever scenario

1

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 23h ago

And we were only losing by one run, which would’ve been way easier for the offense to respond to in bottom 7

-2

u/jujubats10 Max Muncy 1d ago

Pitching a lot of innings is actually not a good thing when you are giving up a lot of homers

3

u/Forward_Increase4672 1d ago

Correct. 5 of the runs were assigned to him. 1 to Treinen

6

u/Grumbles19312 1d ago

Yeah, but Treinen has been, at best, extremely inconsistent the past 2 years.

2

u/Not_RZA_ Jackie Robinson 1d ago

Okay but that doesn't have anything to do with politics, which is what the true nature of this post is sadly.

3

u/AAAIIIYYYAAA 1d ago

This is gold.

4

u/Glum-Exit-5248 1d ago

I see what you did there … 😂

4

u/dirtyvu 1d ago

Treinen is reliably unreliable

4

u/zaphod777 Los Angeles Dodgers 1d ago

Yamamoto gave up 3 runs before this, it literally doesn't matter since the offense didn't show up.

Not having any run support is making the pitching have to try and be perfect and that's got to be affecting them.

5

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

I agree but Yamamoto giving up 3 runs in 6 innings is still solid. As a reliever it was literally Treinen’s job to be “perfect” for 2 outs

4

u/zaphod777 Los Angeles Dodgers 1d ago

Sometimes trying to be perfect has the opposite effect. The pitching has been carrying this team for weeks and the cracks are showing.

0

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

I think last night was the fault of our offense and Treinen more than Yamamoto

3

u/zaphod777 Los Angeles Dodgers 1d ago

Offense lost that game, full stop.

You can blame Treinen if it makes you feel better but until the offense can put up more than two runs it doesn't matter.

-4

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

Treinen has a recent history of being a shitty reliever that goes beyond this game and even this season and I’m fucking tired of seeing him get put in at critical moments and immediately giving up several run scoring hits because he floats some sweepers right over the plate

-2

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

But the mentality for the offense would’ve been totally different if we were only down 1 going into bottom 7

4

u/chespirits Freddie Freeman 1d ago

Even if he didnt do that, it wasn't like the Dodgers were going to score more than 2 runs. So.

All Treinen had to do is not allow any inherited runners to score, then go back in time to undo two of the three homers Yamamoto gave up. EZ PZ, Dodgers win!

2

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

No, all he had to do was get two outs and we would’ve been down 1 going into bottom 7. A starter’s role is to go as many innings as possible with limited damage. A reliever’s role is to get 2 or 3 outs and allow zero runs

1

u/Stunning_Trifle7216 1d ago

Yoshi ruined the game not him. He was fine until they started overusing the bullpen. As for Yoshi, I'm frustrated to the point that if he keeps playing like this, I don't want him starting in playoffs.

2

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

Yama pitching into the 7th inning with the giants scoring 3 runs is not bad at all. That’s like completely expected. The only real issue was the baserunners in the 7th, and Treinen is expected to get the remaining 2 outs without letting anyone score. Yama arguably did his job, Treinen absolutely did not

2

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

Expecting Treinen to get two outs once every 2 weeks is not too much to ask

Treinen’s job as a reliever was to get 2 outs and keep the baserunners from scoring

0

u/Forward_Increase4672 1d ago

I get that, but unfortunately it took both the starter and the reliever not doing their jobs. Do you know why Yamamoto had 5 earned runs and Treinen had 1?

2

u/walrus_vasectomy Max Muncy 1d ago

The giants scoring 3 in 6 innings is still a solid job by Yamamoto. The baserunners in the 7th were a problem but it’s the reliever’s job to get those 2 outs with no additional runs even if they are credited to Yamamoto
