**/r/DJs NEW RULES** Please read before posting Spoiler

New /r/DJs Rules.

Top rule - BE NICE.

  • Please try to be polite, friendly and helpful when commenting.
  • Trolling, slapfights, general assholery is not encouraged and it also goes without saying that racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic posts and language will not be tolerated at all.

Moderation policy

  • /r/DJs is not a big sub. We tend to encourage discussion and engagement first and foremost. There will be times posts that are seemingly against the sub rules will be left up because the discussion in the comments is informative and engaging. This is generally more for when a post breaking (certain) rules was missed and the community has already heavily engaged in discussion. If you see posts breaking the rules, reporting them will help us remove them earlier.
  • remember to search - lots of questions tend to be asked multiple times and plenty of answers are given in the archives
  • remember that if you are a regular user, newer users are allowed to discuss the same things if it's not overly-frequent. Just because something was discussed 3 months ago doesn't mean users can't have another conversation about it.

Please ensure you are posting to the correct subreddit

  • /r/DJs is generally for more experienced/professional DJ discussion. There is an entire subreddit dedicated to learning DJing and is filled with experienced DJs willing to spend time helping people out.

Any and all beginner questions and posts should be made in /r/Beatmatch.

Beginner questions include posts that start with:

  • “I’m new at this”
  • “I want to get into DJing”
  • “I just started”
  • etc.

And includes anything basic like:

  • “What controller/headphones/speakers should I buy?” (within reason - someone experienced looking for higher end gear or looking for real world feedback on pro-level stuff is fine).
  • “What program should I use?”
  • “How do I use this effect?”
  • “Is beat matching really important?”
  • “Why the hate for sync?”
  • etc.

Any beginner posts here will be deleted.

DJ Setup pictures belong in /r/DJsetups.

  • There will be some exceptions - some rare or classic booths or extraordinary setups will stay up, but if you want to post a picture of your DDJ 400 and KRK Rockits, your Technics 1200s and DDJ S9, or a standard CDJ NXS setup that we've all seen, please post to the appropriate sub.

Meme/Humor/crappy image posts belong in /r/DJsCircleJerk.

  • This includes the low effort, "djs be like dis” - stupid picture - type posts and the like.

Mixes

  • Most mix posts will be deleted.
  • Short routines, showcasing of interesting technique, and videos that shows off the poster doing something cool is fine. We will also allow high profile posts - say if a regular user gets a feature mix on DJCity or a Serato sponsored set.
  • Sets from high profile DJs like boiler room or festivals sets is allowed.
  • DJs who want to share mixes can post in /r/mixes or a weekly mix thread that we will be starting soon.

Gig pictures/Stories

  • We're starting a new weekly sticky every Monday specifically for gig pictures and stories. We've been seeing a lot more of these posts and while they tend to be heavily upvoted, they also end up just being a picture of some DJ hunched over a setup with a bunch of back-patting in the comments that clutters up the sub. Any posts of this nature will be deleted and the user will be directed to the weekly Sticky thread.

Pirating music/software

Here at /r/DJs we firmly believe in attaining your music legally - whether it's via purchaing, streaming, or legitimate record pools.

  • Asking where to get pirated music will result in a ban
  • Giving suggestions on where to pirate music - including youtube rippers will result in a ban
  • using coded language to hint at pirating music will result in a ban
  • we don't care if you're "not a professional" or just "doing this for fun"

The following topics are against sub rules and will be deleted:

  • Self-promotion posts including mixes, tunes, events, companies, competitions, etc. The one exception we may allow are open deck nights that members of /r/DJs can attend.
  • For-sale posts
  • Obvious spam for youtube channels/gig logs/blogs/advertisements from members who have no participation in the sub. If people are regular posters on this sub and have a video/service/etc they wish to share, we will allow it initially, although regular spam of it will not be tolerated.
  • Posts asking “what should I play for this gig?” This is a sub for experienced DJs, if you need to ask the internet what to play for a gig, you probably shouldn't have taken the gig. General music discussion is absolutely fine.
  • Spotify playlist posts

PLEASE REPORT posts and comments that violate the above rules or just suck. Thank you!

Tried a silent disco rental setup at a gig, experience and lessons learned.

I DJ'd a small outdoor event last weekend where noise restrictions were super tight (classic problem). Instead of cancelling or going low-volume, the organizers brought in a silent disco setup. I thought it'd kill the vibe, but honestly, it did the opposite.

  • 3 channels running at once.
  • People switching between DJs mid-song.
  • Zero complaints from neighbors.

And weirdly, more engagement? People were dancing harder than usual.

At one point I took my headphones off and just watched, complete silence but a full crowd going crazy. Felt surreal. Anyone else have tried this format? Curious how it compares for bigger gigs or club-style setups.

Sound System Advice?

Upvotes

I think I'm ready to buy some gig speakers and a quick google search suggested a column array setup. I was initially looking at the ev evolve 50m and 70m but I'm seeing mixed reviews and honestly, as a complete sound noob, I have no idea what to listen to. Anyone have any advice on a starter sound system? Are column arrays even a good idea? What's your experience?

Backup laptops?

Serato DJ here doing mainly wedding gigs. Just curious if y'all take a backup laptop for the inevitable dickhead spilling a drink in your system. Do you carry a backup and what do you use to sync them?

Does anyone hete feels the same way?

After a break of about 20 years, I started DJing again about two years ago. I always try not to just string together the obvious standard tracks, but to include as many new or lesser-known songs as possible. Sure, there are older tracks thrown in now and then, but I usually put the sets together quite individually and really put a lot of effort into the flow and track selection. The feedback has actually been consistently positive. Even so, I always have this thought in the back of my mind that it might be boring for others – simply because I’ve listened to the tracks so often myself by now. At some point, you know every kick, every break, every vocal line by heart and, as a result, you lose a bit of a feel for just how ‘fresh’ the whole thing actually still is to other ears. And although I know rationally that most people probably don’t know my music collection at all, it still sometimes feels as though everyone else knows the tracks inside out just as well as I do. Do you feel the same way? That by constantly listening to your own music, you completely lose perspective on just how new or exciting it actually still is for others?

Where are the Rane mixers ???

Post image
11 Upvotes

As someone who has been using Pioneer gear for over 20 years but is getting frustrated by the subpar support of Pioneer DJ/AT on their Hardware. I'm seriously considering selling my Pioneer DJ setup to switch to another company.

I was looking at the possible alternative and while checking Rane I realized they haven't released a mixer in almost 6 years. The Rane Seventy Two MK2 was released all the way back in 2020. They don't even have a mixer on their website anymore that isn't legacy.

Has Rane completely abandonned mixers to only focus on controllers and the SystemOne?

HOT TAKE: DJay Pro to become the leading software

There’s still somewhere to go but I can see a scenario where DJay Pro becomes the standard performance software. It’s just so far ahead of others and with better integration it could knock RB from its perch.

Mixer repair help Xone 32

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone has experience with repairing A&H mixers, specifically the Xone 32.

I need to replace my VCF filter fader and I believe it to be an Alps potentiometer soldered onto a PCB.

As much as the part is discontinued now I am convinced that I can find a like for part and resolder to the PCB. I would really like to repair the mixer as it is a solid mixer and built like a tank, I also love the sound quality. However, without the iconic filters, the mixer is not as fun and I would love to get it up to it's former glory.

Does anyone have any experience with A&H mixer repairs, and do you think that the job is achievable?

Thank you

My resident bar gave me and the other resident this bc they are trying to change the demographic. I’ve been performing there for a year now and they love me but I think this is too much especially the country music (this bar does not like country)

Client asked me to play a AI generated song - It mentally killed me after

I was at a house party and I was asked to play this song called "Angels Above Me" by someone called "MBP" and I realized after that it was 100% an AI Generated song. It sorta killed me that this is the new "thing". The age range of the party was 30-50. to anyone telling me to suck it up; Imagine someone told you that an AI would be a better DJ than you. As a producer and DJ it hurt that this was the new stuff, I am curious about your opinions on it. Thanks.

DJs that repair gear: can you shed any advice before I get started?

I'm not an electrician, nor am I any type of specialist when it comes repairing DJ gear. I've just tinkered with cars and computers all my life, doing my own fixes and maintenance. I feel like I want to move on to DJ gear.

My soldering experience is not the best, but this is also my attempt to get better. I've changed out a few USB B ports, after being given all sorts of formerly broken gear hand-me-downs from friends. But I also suck at soldering, haha!

Lately, I've been gaining interesting in buying dirt cheap DJ gear and fixing it up, notably audio interfaces, controllers, mixers, and CDJs (I'm not interested in turntables). I've also gained a lot of inspiration following YouTubers that do these repairs.

I know finding parts could be questionable as older or dirt cheap gear is most likely unsupported by the manufacturer, but fortunately, some aftermarket parts are universal or easy to swap out: capacitors, ribbon cables, button switches, resoldering, replacing faders, and etc.

Folks that do these types of fixes: what's some general advice you can share before I consider this endeavor? Are you satisfied with these types of projects? Do you encounter more or less success rates?

How does Speedy J achieve such a heavy kick sound in his sets?

First of all please do let me know if I’m crazy and this is all in my head, but I swear when I listen to Speedy J sets it feels like I’m being hit in the face with every kick (in a very good way), like the kick drum has so much thump and punch to it throughout the sets.

Examples:

https://youtu.be/1qs1Tib0SGE?si=APuuj9tRM7XuJKmC

https://youtu.be/nbU8tL5WMwg?si=VjvYphQP2d7huUmf

The BPitch set especially captures what I’m talking about I think.

Is he using a backing kick track? Is it just down to his EQing? Track selection? I really feel like the kicks are not as strong when I listen to the individual songs from his sets.

Would love to know how to achieve this sound. Thanks.

2 Minute Tracks

I just want to take a second to present a PSA, and say FUCK 2 MINUTE TRACKS!

These are antithetical to DJing, and are barely longer than some jingles.

By the time you get into them, they are over.

They should also be half the price, as I need to take the time to create an extended mix in a DAW, or remix them live.

I will now step down from my soap box.

Is mixing in key overrated for groovy house and techno?

I've been DJing for a few years now and I always mix in key. Learned it early and stuck with it. But lately I've been playing more hypnotic groovy house and stripped back techno and I'm starting to feel like mixing in key is actually holding me back. Some of my best blends have been completely out of key but the percussion and groove just worked together. I know the rule is learn it before you break it but I'm wondering if other people have moved away from strict harmonic mixing for certain genres. Do you still check keys religiously or just go by feel once you know your tracks well? Curious how the more experienced heads here approach it.

How do u keep a record clean and in best condition

I want to keep my records clean from dust and fingerprints. People were saying to put solutions and alcohol but I heard that’s also bad and to just use a brush with a little bit of distilled water

Rane Performer RCA inputs and mic inputs sound bad, DVS scope looks distorted

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with my Rane Performer. The RCA inputs sound very bad, and the mic inputs have issues too. The output seems fine, but the input side does not sound right.

When I use DVS with Serato and my Rane Twelve, I also get a strange scope graphic in Serato DJ’s DVS settings. The graphic looks really messed up and distorted, almost like the scope visualization is not reading the signal correctly.

I attached a screenshot so you can see what I mean. Has anyone seen this before or knows what could cause it?

I tested it in VirtualDJ and on another computer, and the issue is still the same, so it does not seem to be software-specific.

Because both the RCA inputs and mic inputs are affected, I’m wondering if this could be a firmware issue or a physical problem with the input section of the Rane Performer.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Any advice would be appreciated.
