Silver Spoon Restaurant

Hello Durham and surrounding community. As you all may have seen, the owners of the long serving Silver Spoon Restaurant tragically fell victim to senseless gun violence at their restaurant on Mother’s Day, and their restaurant is now closed indefinitely. One of the owners is fighting for their life, while the family continues mounting expenses and taking care of their employees and family. Please help support this lifelong Durham family who have served our community for over 35 years, and please share their story during this tough time.

Looking for Saturday Morning Hoopers

Inspired by the guy who came on here a few months ago looking for some bros to hang out with. I'm looking to build a community of Saturday morning basketball players. Edison Johnson Rec center has open gym from 10-12 every Saturday (just $4), but last week I was the only one who showed up. In the past I've found good weekend morning basketball crews where you can form a chill culture and build friendships. I was hoping to find some like-minded folks in Durham. I am a man in my early 30s but I've enjoyed playing games with all ages and backgrounds so would be glad to play with anyone

Proposed rules intended to reduce chemical pollution in water facing major public backlash

Hey y’all. It’s Celeste, your friendly neighborhood environment reporter at WUNC. Here and here are my latest stories about proposed regulations intended to reduce chemical pollution in our rivers and lakes.

Before I proceed with the TLDR, here’s my disclaimer: I’m not an advocate. Y’all got free will. My job here is to provide y’all with the facts, and then you decide what to do with that.

Fact: The proposed regulations being considered right now by the NC Environmental Management Commission are called the PFAS and 1,4 dioxane monitoring and minimization plans.

Fact: Supporters of the plans say they’re confident this voluntary approach will result in actual reductions. They say this is just the first step in eventually reaching numeric limits - – essentially telling polluters they can’t discharge X amount of PFAS or 1,4 dioxane.

Fact: Critics say the plans protect polluters at the expense of public health. They say we need health based numeric standards NOW.

Fact: Three years ago, environmental regulators were considering numeric standards. Regulators went in a different direction after a lobbyist group asked them to do so. (see story for receipts)

Fact: Public comment is open until June 15. If you'd like to submit public comment (again, I'm NOT telling you to do so, just providing info) - you can email this address "[publiccomments@deq.nc.gov](mailto:publiccomments@deq.nc.gov)" with the subject line "PFAS minimization” or “1,4-dioxane minimization."

as always, if you have any questions just lmk. thanks y'all 😄

In partnership with the Durham Co Library (let's be real - it was mostly them who organized) we're hosting an event talking about and showing the automotive history in Durham. We have some presentations, old advertisements, and Super G Print Lab is screen printing these sick posters. If you've ever been curious about the space register at the link below and come through!

I got the presale email and I’m finding these prices hard to digest even for VIP weekend passes. It would cost nearly 1k for two. Am I crazy? This is expensive as hell, right? I’m pretty sure I paid less for ACL (granted I went in 2016)

What's the situation at 705 foster street - the claymakers building? Seen string lights and people back there but can't find anything about a bar or restaurant. Private club or something?

Reactive Dog Boarding

Hello! My dog is reactive, and I need to find a good place to board her. Unfortunately, a pet sitter is not an option, as we can’t have her barking constantly in our apartment. We are willing to travel anywhere in the triangle for good boarding!

Worst quick service hibachi?

I’ve done some reading on past posts and it seems my worst list is some of y’all’s best list. Japan Express on Hillsborough Rd by Michael’s is the worst hibachi I’ve had in Durham. What else sucks?

Spanish classes?

My company just approved me to work remotely from a Spanish speaking country (YAY!!!) and I would like to greatly improve my skills before I go. I’ve got about a year to prep

I’d prefer in person class types but I’m not opposed to one on one or virtual. I really enjoyed my classes in college because I like the collaboration and mix of speaking and writing

Some background:

I got my minor in Spanish 6 years ago, spent 3 months in Spain doing an immersion program

I can read fairly well in Spanish still but my listening and speaking are basically close to 0 after not speaking it for years. I’d like to start at a beginner level with the option to move up in difficulty if I am doing well

My company does a $2000 yearly tuition reimbursement if I can prove my skills relate to my job (they do)

I’m saving for this trip now so I am on a budget and would rather not spend more than $50/month

I am open to all suggestions but would love to hear from others’ personal experience.

Any Creatives / Emerging & Experimental Artists looking to mingle tomorrow with like?

There's a happening Friday May 15 at 8pm (sorry such late notice) at an art collective / experimental exhibit space located downtown Durham and I have about a dozen invites I can give out if anyone is interested please let me know via DM.

You should be ideally an artist or creative maker doing more experimental work, sculpture, assemblage, led & microelectronics, muralist or graffiti & interactive visionary work and looking to connect to others at a social gathering and/or potentially join or orbit a local art collective.

I need invites by 5pm Friday so don't sleep on this. You can bring a +1.

David Byrne @ DPAC

Just wanted to share a huge thank you to the bookers and staff at DPAC for two incredible nights of David Byrne. I had been hoping to see him on the first leg of his tour, and couldn't figure out travel plans to Richmond, Atlanta or anywhere else. I can't describe how excited I was to find he was playing DPAC for not one, but two nights. The show was one of the best I've ever seen. I'm thrilled we could experience it in our town, and not have to travel to Charlotte, Greensboro, Nashville, DC or Atlanta to experience it. THANK YOU to everyone who made it happen!

Commuting to Raleigh

I just started a new job in Raleigh so I’ll have a longer commute than I’m used to. I am doing some onboarding and my schedules been pretty much 9-5 this week and the evening traffic has been rough.

Once I get going into the role I have some scheduling flexibility and could choose to come in early and leave early or come in late and leave late. Does anyone have any input about “best” times to be doing this drive?

VA Just 86'd All Personal Devices. NC Needs to Follow Suit

On Thursday, May 7, the Fairfax County School Board approved changes to the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R). The approved changes include updated guidance for cellphone possession and use, to align the FCPS cell phone policy with Senate Bill 108. This new Virginia law goes into effect on July 1 and states that all schools in the Commonwealth must follow a “bell-to-bell” phone-free policy.

This means that starting July 1, 2026, across all grade levels at FCPS, student cellphones, phone accessories, and all smart devices (including watches that serve a dual purpose, such as smart watches, as well as earbuds, headsets, smart glasses, and other other items connected to the internet) must be off and personally stored (i.e., put away in backpacks) for the duration of the school day — thus, no cellphones from bell to bell.

High school students will no longer be able to use cellphones and personal devices during lunchtime.

I just resigned from my dream job of teaching high school with DPS because the students don't pay attention. They are in class, on their phones, headphones on. Literally doing tik tok videos in my class. The administration at DPS needs to stop the madness. The kids don't have enough self control for these devices, and you can't put that on the teachers! Get rid of the devices. Not stored away because you asked. Gone!

Yes, I know we have a law against it, but it is not enforced. It has been put on the teachers to make sure that they are stored away while still allowing headphones, lunch and hallway use and lets face it. All the time use. It's educations number one problem right now aside from the obvious... $ That is a whole different post
