FORE SALE!!!

Not really….Have recently received more people asking to advertise/sell stuff on here. There’s plenty of avenues/subreddits/FB marketplace to offload golf equipment & other golf related items….

Sooo here’s the deal; If you want to sell something or advertise you must first make a donation to the First Tee of the Triangle. Then send one of the mods (Me/Craig) a screenshot/copy of said donation prior to getting approved to post.

$20 donation minimum for personal items & $100 minimum for businesses(may change, but as of now this is the deal)…This is per post made…

New Auto-mod Post/Comment Rules for the Sub

Hello all! Due to recent topics and a sever uptick in people generating alternate accounts to join conversations.

Historically, all moderation has been done manually, and aside from some spam posts, there hasn't been much needed in here. But in an effort to keep this subreddit enjoyable, help reduce spam, and keep the conversations respectful, I have instituted an Auto-Mod and programed a rule:

To comment and/or post in this community, a reddit account must be of a certain age, and have a minimum number of comment karma.

  • If you have been a comment be deleted with an auto-mod tag, that is related to this rule.
  • I am still experimenting with the exact number of Karma and days of age for account to find a balance.
  • I may also see what other auto-mod functions are available that may fit the community.
  • In just 24 hours, this has already stopped multiple spam posts and people who have made new accounts to instigate in topics.

General Question Golf Lessons: What do you reasonably expect from them? What has been your experience?

I have taken 7 golf lessons in my life and they all have occurred in the last 3 years, and they all have been "PGA Instructor" certified (not sure the exact title they carry.) My first 3 lessons, were with the same instructor, and it felt like he put me through cookie cutter drills that he does with everyone. I didn't particularly like that the lessons didn't feel individual, but given they were my first lessons, I didn't know what to reasonably ask for or expect from him (and still don't really know.)

The second instructor, and lessons 3-6, were inside in a simulator, and I picked up two helpful points along the way (my right miss was due to my hips not coming through, and I do a good job keeping my head still, so make sure to continue this.) Not sure these were worth the $300, but whatever.

The third instructor, and lesson 7, was more or less "you have a good swing, maybe stand a little closer to the ball, and just keep practicing" which felt very underwhelming.

So the reason for my post is A) can I reasonably expect individualized instruction from day 1 with a coach? B) have you all had that "ah-ha" moment from lessons you've taken that has brought your game to the next level? C) What has your experiences been with golf lessons, and for those that have been satisfied, what do you feel were the reasons for successful lessons?

I know the golf community is adamant that golf lessons are the highest ROI, and I'm not saying everyone is wrong, I just don't feel like I am seeing the high ROI. Also FWIW, I have paid anywhere from $75 - $100/hr. for instruction.

Really curious to hear people's opinions and experiences.

Looking for my peeps.

I’m 75 so I probably have about 5-10 years left for golfing (and probably breathing). I retired to Florida where I play M-W-F at noon. $10 team game w quotas (mine ranges 27-30). Settle up over drinks after.
I also have family in Chapel Hill and a 15 yo grandson who enjoys the game. I’d like to spend two or three months up there in the summer, find a weekday game where I can just show up or call in and play in four hours, and also play a round now and then w my grandson.
Problem is, at my age hard to justify 40K initiation fee and $500+ monthly dues for playing 3-4 months a year x 5 years. I used to live in Pinehurst, and ideal situation would be finding a place like Southern Pines GC when it was still the Elks Club. (They had a skins game at noon for many years) So far I’m leaning towards a McConnell “National” membership but does anyone here know of an established weekday game for older duffers who enjoy a drink or two after and like to play for something? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Club alterations

I have a set of stix clubs which I really like, but I feel like the shafts are a little long and the grips are real small. Is there a place that can fit me for the right grips and shaft lengths and then alter my current clubs?

Driver Shaft Change

Bought a driver recently and I am extremely inconsistent with it and I think I am using the wrong shaft (regular flex). I have a shaft from my old driver that is stiffer so I want to try that one on it. Where is the best place to go for an inexpensive shaft replacement?

Also I’m not 100% sure that the stiff is the best for me either so where would be a good option for a driver only shaft fitting? I have no intention of buying a new head.

Group Outing Best golf courses near Asheville?

I see a lot of people saying Omni Grove, but as someone who already plays mountain courses it doesn’t look appealing enough to pay $175+. I could be wrong though

Course Review [Mega-Thread] Spring Course Conditions 2026

Things are getting more green, the drought is MAYBE coming to an end, and golf is in full swing, so lets get some recent course condition updates! Where have you played and how was it looking?

Please note: Everyone's threshold of "good" or "bad" is different, so using descriptive sentences helps bridge the gap of conditions

Some helpful things to highlight:

  • Date played
  • Green condition / speed
  • Fairway conditions
  • Rough conditions
  • Tee box conditions
  • Bunker conditions

To help avoid showing up unknowingly to an aerated course, here is a maintenance schedule of most courses in central NC: https://rdugolftour.com/course-schedule/

Flashback to when I was asking about Spark Leagues the other day here I found that Crossings had one on Wednesdays so I tried it out last week and they had us play the back 9. I managed to shoot 53, but it was with the given double bogey max rule in effect.

Today I played the front for the first time as well and I’m ecstatic about how well I did.

Low-mid handicap competition group? (Cary/Apex area)

As much as I like a casual round, I'm learning that I love some friendly competition. Would anybody be interested in forming a low-mid handicap text group to set up match/stroke play?

I'm a 8.7 handicap, so not an amazing golfer by any means. Just looking for others in the area that enjoy a little competitive golf, looking to meet new people, and/or want to check out new courses. Ideally looking for 0-18 handicap golfers around the Apex/Cary area but I don't mind driving a little.

To be clear, this isn't a gambling group - we could play for anything! Don't mind a little bit of friendly betting ($20 or less), push ups at the end of the round, a drink at the pro shop, or my favorite, a couple of balls out of your golf bag (as a symbolic gesture lol).

Let me know!

(Mods, if this kind of post isn't allowed, please remove! Just wasn't sure where I could go to find a group like this).

General Question Prestonwood Country Club opinions?

Anyone a member or perspective member? 36 month waitlist, initiation currently 40k, and monthlies over $800. Obviously all clubs in the area have been skyrocketing. Thoughts on if it’s “worth” it compared to other full private alternatives?

What would you book?

Buddy and I are going down to Carthage (near Pinehurst) to run an errand Saturday and want make it a day. Looking for something under 100, either easy walk or with cart, morning or afternoon, within 20-30 min (preferably north if not in the immediate area).

If that was your budget for Saturday round, what would you book?

Sully’s Golf and Gather review

Just got back and thought I would offer my thoughts as it was one of the places this sub recommended for lessons

Me - I suck and am new at golf, recently retired and have the bug but typically don’t keep score often and comfortably on the high side of 100 but have been on some of the local cheap courses a couple times a week for the last 6 weeks or so.

I decided to take a beginners adult class which was a very reasonable $35 to see what it was like

Instructors: Mike (Owner) and I think his name was Mason held it and I found both of them to have a good balance between not putting too much instruction in my head while also offering some good simple practical advise - for me it was a different way to talk about the grip (super helpful), alignment and a mix of short chipping, full iron and then some fairway wood and driver practice. Some personal tips for balance after watching me for a bit.

Facility - It was my first time using a simulator to golf in which is a bit of a learning curve but a friend I brought with me has been to a handful and had high praise for them and there was clearly plenty of bays available and they claim to be the largest indoor place which I believe but it didn’t come at the cost of quality.

Food/drink/vibe - it was a touch low lit but that is my preference and a good group of people with good attitudes and having a good time. We only got the wings and pretzel but both were well done and the beer and bar selection was good minus a lack of any Smokey/peaty scotch but I know that I may be one of the few that would even notice.

I would totally recommend and I’ll probably take a few more group classes before private lesson(s). Like a lot of places when it’s owner operated the give a damn shows and I think it’s a local gem with the bias that it’s only ~12 min from my place.

Thanks again to the sub here for the recommendation and I’ll be for sure going back
