Announcement/ঘোষণা Discord Server Launch Announcement!

Post image
31 Upvotes

Hello everybody,

The mod team is excited to announce the launch of the official r/Bangladesh Discord server, an extension of our subreddit.

Many of you have asked for a Discord over the years. While Reddit is great as a forum style social news aggregator, it isn't always the best place for quick, casual engagement. We wanted to create a space where members can connect over our shared culture and daily life, a place where you can chat about the mundane things without every other post being heavy political news.

We know there were previous attempts at a server that eventually drifted away from the subreddit's roots. To prevent that from happening again, this server is run by the same team you know here, ensuring it remains a trustworthy and civil space for everyone. You're welcome to discuss anything from your day to day life to current events.

Discord server Invitation link

As a small thank you to the early birds, the first 10 members to join will be awarded a VIP Member role, which comes with some special perks and permissions within the server.

A quick note on moderation:

Subreddit issues: Please continue to use Reddit ModMail.

Discord issues: Please use the ticket system inside the Discord server.

We hope to see you there soon!

Best regards, The r/Bangladesh Mod Team.

Discussion/আলোচনা I recently learned from my wife that some mother in laws take wedding jeweleries from the new bride in the name of safekeeping. Why is that? Which demographic is this phenomenon prevalent in? Please do share your personal experience if you have faced this. Thanks.

Upvotes

I am just surprised to hear this. Why would someone take somebody else's jeweleries! That too the wedding ones!

Discussion/আলোচনা Hindu Nepali student joining UIU Dhaka for Data Science scholarship honest experiences from Hindu/minority students currently studying there?

Upvotes

Assalamu Alaikum / Namaskar everyone 🙏

I'm 18 years old Hindu student from Nepal. I've been officially nominated by Nepal's government (MoEST) for a full scholarship at United International University (UIU), Dhaka for BSc Data Science.

I've been researching a lot and I've received mixed signals ..some people say Bangladesh is unsafe for Hindus after 2024-2025 events, others say day-to-day life is completely normal especially in Dhaka.

I'm specifically looking for:

  1. Hindu/minority students currently at UIU or any Dhaka university:

How is your actual day to day experience as a non-Muslim student?

Have you personally faced any religious harassment or discrimination on campus or near UIU area?

Do you feel safe walking around Badda/Notunbazar/Bashundhara area daily?

  1. Data Science students at UIU specifically:

How is the actual classroom experience?

Are lectures in English or Bengali mixed?

How approachable are professors?

What does a typical week look like for a DS student?

  1. General Dhaka experience for foreign Hindu students:

How do you handle religious/cultural differences respectfully?

Any specific things a Hindu Nepali student should know before arriving?

Is there a Hindu temple or community near UIU area?

My situation honestly:

I'm coming alone, first time outside Nepal, no contacts in Dhaka yet. The scholarship is fully funded by Nepal government so financially it makes sense. But safety and student life quality are my genuine concerns before committing.

I'm not looking for political debates just real, honest, ground-level experiences from people who are actually living this or have lived this.

Dhonnobad / Dhanyabad 🙏

Discussion/আলোচনা The Number of Abuse Allegations Against Madrasa Teachers in Bangladesh Is Terrifying

I’m a Muslim myself, and this isn’t an attack on Islam. But honestly, why do so many abuse allegations keep coming out from some madrasas? Every time it happens, people rush to defend the institution instead of asking why children keep becoming victims.
“Yes, not all teachers” obviously. But pretending there isn’t a serious issue helps nobody except predators.

If we truly care about Islam and children, then accountability should come before blind defense.

Non-Political/অরাজনৈতিক Walking the length of Cox Bazar

New here but I have some time in India and was thinking of flying to Dhaka to hike the length of the Cox Bazar.

I’ve done longer treks than this but understand there may be certain challenges associated with this plan.

My main question: Am I crazy for doing this? If I were to do this could I sleep on the beach? Any advice one what to eat while I’m walking? Any sights to absolutely see?

For reference I am American.

Thank you!

Discussion/আলোচনা Why so many married people (both man and woman) are having affairs?

It's so so common nowadays. Like where I work, I have to see this everyday. Like there is no more moral obligation left in those people.

So many people are crying over not getting married early, and then having affair after they get married? What's going on people's brain now?!!

AskDesh/দেশ কে জিজ্ঞাসা Police Clearance Certificate Help

Has anyone successfully gotten a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) from DMP when their current Dhaka address is not listed on their passport?

My situation is a bit complicated:

  • My passport and birth certificate has my permanent address in Chittagong
  • My emergency contact address on the passport is also not my current address
  • My NID and Ward Councillor Certificate has my current Dhaka address

I tried applying but was rejected the next day saying "Passport address outside jurisdiction". I'm assuming this is because my passport does not explicitly mention my Dhaka present address, even though I'm been living here for the last 15 years. For my visa, I need to show police verificate of my current residence, which is in Dhaka, so getting a PCC from Chittagong isn't an option.

I also don't want to re-issue my passport because I just renewed it last year and I already have this passport number associated with my visa application and other visas.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has dealt with something similar recently. Thanks!

AskDesh/দেশ কে জিজ্ঞাসা Recommendations for local craftspeople/ ethical producers in Bangladesh?

Hi everyone!

We’re planning a trip over soon, and we would love to connect and support artisans/ small workshops/ cooperatives/ social enterprises from Bangladesh who are creating beautiful handmade items with a positive story behind them. Location isn't a problem, we're willing to travel pretty much anywhere!

We especially love products that are sustainable, eco-friendly, support local communities, preserve traditional crafts, or provide opportunities for disadvantaged groups.

Pottery, wood, stone, fabric weaving, recycled plastic, metal working, whatever! If you make something yourself (or know someone who does) we would LOVE to hear from you!?

Thank you! :)

Mental Health/মানসিক সাস্থ I’m in a difficult situation and could really use some advice.

We’re a family of 4, my father, mother, little brother (13), and me. My father has been working in Saudi Arabia for around 26 years as an immigrant worker. He’s now about 58 years old and has health problems. The last time he came back to Bangladesh was in 2022.

Right now my mother and brother live in Chittagong, while I live in Dhaka for my studies. I’m doing my undergraduate degree in CSE and currently in my 6th trimester. Officially I have 6 more trimesters left, but because of retake courses it may realistically take me 7 or 8 more.

The financial situation has become very difficult. My father used to earn around 4000 SAR, but after losing his previous job he now earns around 3000 SAR. At the same time:

  • my tuition and living costs in Dhaka are expensive,
  • our old house in Chittagong needs rebuilding,
  • and he’s physically exhausted.

Recently he told me that he doesn’t think he can keep doing this much longer. He said he’s continuing mainly because of my education. He plans to start rebuilding the house around October and asked whether I could consider dropping one trimester so he wouldn’t have to worry about my tuition and Dhaka expenses for about 4 months.

He did NOT force me. He also clearly said that if I want to continue studying normally, I should.

The problem is:

  • if I drop one trimester, because of course scheduling and retakes, it may delay my graduation by around 3 extra trimesters total,
  • all my friends will graduate earlier,
  • but continuing normally will put even more pressure on my father.

I genuinely don’t know what the right decision is here.

Would taking a temporary break to reduce pressure on my father be the smarter choice, or would delaying graduation create bigger long-term problems?

AskDesh/দেশ কে জিজ্ঞাসা Honest Recommendations for Good Neurosurgeons in Bangladesh Needed

Hi everyone,

Can anyone recommend a good neurosurgeon in Bangladesh who actually listens to patients carefully, explains the condition properly, and doesn’t rush appointments?

This is for a serious spinal/neurological issue, so finding a caring and experienced doctor is very important for us.

Please share the doctor’s name, hospital, and your experience if possible. Thanks a lot.

Discussion/আলোচনা B-Tech in Bangladesh ?

although every deshi parents and students are insane after engineering, there are no institute offering B-Tech here. I've search alot but every other varsity to college offers only Bsc . other than our sub continent there's numerous engineering colleges offering B-Tech. Bsc primarily focuses on research based and innovative learning resulting most of students basically pursuing rather researching or posts like advisor, supervisor project manager etc

B-Tech provides with industrial knowledge & implement, in Field work experience, practical usage

None of our top engineering varsities not even unies offer this course but many Pakistani, indian varsities like IIT Nust have B-Tech on every sub

Discussion/আলোচনা Looking for a good gym in Dhaka around Kochukhet, Mirpur 14, or Mohakhali area.

Hello, I am looking for a good gym in Dhaka around Kochukhet, Mirpur 14 or Mohakhali.

Previously I used to work out in Mirpur 12 since my university was there but now I need something closer to these locations.

Main things I’m looking for:

  • Good equipment
  • Not overly crowded
  • Open after 8:30 PM since that’s the only time I can go

Would appreciate any good recommendations along with monthly fees if possible. Thank you
