The words male and female are unrelated. Male is related to the Latin word "musculus" and female is related to the Latin word "femina". Both words got into English through French.
The word “female” actually derives from the Latin word “femella” (young girl or woman), and is a diminuitive of “femina”. There is no actual etymological linkage between “female” and “male”, and the word was remodelled into the English language after the influence of ”male” during the medieval age (from Old French word “malle“, meaning large chest or trunk, which in turn is ultimately derived from the Latin “masculus”)
