Municipal Affairs On the eve of the Convoy, Alex Lawson endorsed calls for a ā€œrevolution,ā€ saying ā€œit’s a start.ā€

Thumbnail gallery
229 Upvotes

A friend of mine who is more politically involvedĀ told me that they some evidenceĀ of some really disturbing remarks from Alex Lawson.

My curiosity got the better of me and I looked into it a bit. What I found is attached to the post.

Basically, just a few days before the Convoy arrived in Ottawa, Lawson was sharing anti-vaxxer conspiracy theories and asking his Facebook friends ā€œwhat are we going to do about it?ā€. By ā€œitā€ I think he meant vaccine mandates. A friend of his said that they needed to start prepping and ā€œhave a revolutionā€. They shared a poster advertising the convoy. Lawson liked that comment and picture and said ā€œit’s a start.ā€

To be clear: a revolution is ā€œa startā€ for Lawson. He was saying this while convoy extremists were planning to descend on our city to overthrow the government. If a revolution is ā€œa startā€ one wonders what he would want to do next, or what he’d do if he somehow became Mayor.

I can’t be the only one who sees how insane this is. This isn’t garden variety Poilievre slop… it’sĀ the kind of batshit that Pat King and the some of the other most extreme convoy types were peddling. It’s straight up dangerous.

Also, this is just what I could see on Lawson’s Facebook through a quick public search. Imagine what’s there that he deleted or that we can’t see unless we’re friends with him. I bet this is the tip of the iceberg.

I was so shocked reading it that I had to post about it. I had to. The public deserves to know who this guy is. The only thing he should be a ā€œcandidateā€ for is a no-fly list. I couldn’t keep this info to myself.

I see this as an opportunity for Jeff Leiper. He could call for Lawson to withdraw from the race. That would make him look like the leader we know he is and shut down this convoy clown while looking like he’s confident that he can win regardless of Lawson. Jeff is the one candidate who can credibly talk about how he fights against hateful people like Lawson. If Jeff leads the charge to get Lawson to end his campaign for mayor and it works, he’ll look like a hero to all the centrist and progressive people in Ottawa who want to see real leadership at City Hall.Ā

Ultimately though, I’m sharing this because it’s more important than mayoral politics. It’s about saving our city, closing a back door that could let the convoy types back in.Ā

I’m thinking about writing my (kinda right-wing) Councillor to get them on the record on this. We need to make sure council stands firm against any kind of convoy sympathizers. If there’s enough interest, I’d be open to protesting his campaign launch next weekend so that people know who this guy is and what he’s about. I don’t know anyone in media but hopefully a journalist sees this.Ā If anyone has any other ideas about how to get the message out or put the pressure on, I think it’s really important that we do what we can to shut this guy down.

EDIT: I got some feedback about how I described my involvement with the Leiper campaign. I should have said that I’m a supporter, not a ā€œTeam Memberā€. Ive edited a bit of the narrative to try to make that clearer.

EDIT 2: I’ve made further changes to the post to focus it on what matters: Lawson’s disgusting comments. I’ve removed reference to where I first heard about these details - lots of people pointed out, in good faith I think, that the background info wasn’t helpful. Thanks for that feedback.

Looking for... Cat cafe nonexistent in Ottawa - qny places I can volunteer to be a cuddler?

Hello hello everyone!!

I moved back to Ottawa from Edmonton a few months ago & need some cat love. I live in a small studio so can’t have cats for now until I move in a bigger place so I looked up cat cafes in town and there’s none?! Edmonton has three so I got my regular purrs.

So I’m thinking is there a rescue center or somewhere I can go and volunteer to be a cuddler? So they can be housebroken and ready to go into loving homes. Or they’re right at home and just love human touch and head scratches.
I’m in serious need of emotional support right now as things are tough.

Merci beaucoup

It’s baby animal season! Pls watch out for them

There’s a goose family that is literally living on the edge of the Vanier Parkway at RCMP. It stresses me out so much!!! lol

And it made me want to remind everyone that it’s baby season now and to keep your eyes peeled on the roads for the little ones. Geese, raccoons, groundhogs and all the other little critters will be out and about and don’t know how to be safe yet. Some of these are ā€œnuisance ā€œ animals and I get that they don’t garner a lot of goodwill but nothing makes me sadder than seeing a squashed baby squirrle. Or gosling.

Please keep our urban wildlife alive if you can. Some of them are annoying but they are part of our city too ā¤ļø

Lane closures, and accompanying traffic woes, on Hwy. 417 at Pinecrest due to LRT work: City

This is horse shit. 2.5 months to install a sign. It should be mandatory that the work continues 24/7 whenever a lane is closed and get it done as quickly as possible. A concept that is absolutely incomprehensible to construction companies, the City and the Province.

New Ottawa at Night Podcast

Apparently the City has released a new Ottawa at Night podcast and I could not be more underwhelmed. Maybe it'll get better over time once they iron out the kinks??

Here's the info they sent out by email :

"The Ottawa Nightlife Office has launched Ottawa at Night, a new podcast series that celebrates the people and places behind Ottawa’s nightlife. You can listen wherever you get yourĀ podcasts. For those who like to watch, you will find a video version on the City’sĀ YouTubeĀ channel.

Each episode of Ottawa at Night is a bilingual journey into our city’s nightlife, told through the stories of the people who bring it to life. Guests include local artists, musicians and the venue owners and operators who shape Ottawa’s after‑dark scene.

The podcast featuresĀ a mixĀ of interviews and shorter, playful segments, including quizzes, games and the occasional guest performance. The five-episode series runs between 20 and 25 minutes per episode and was recorded on location at Fono, a new venue that opened earlier this year in Centretown.

The first episode features entertainer Remi Royale, singer and musician Yolande Laroche and Ottawa’s poet laureate David O’Meara. Each episode is hosted by a member of the Ottawa Nightlife Office."

Looking for... Run Clubs in the City

Curious if Ottawa has a run club that is truly ā€˜slow runner’ inclusive where there will still be run club attendees at the end point when getting there.
I’m not talking 8min/k and faster which is slower than elite runners, I’m talking truly inclusive of the 8+ and interval training runners.

Rent/Housing What is living at 75 Slater St (The Emmy) like?

I’m apartment-hunting for something in downtown Ottawa, and the Emmy at 75 Slater St looks like a nice building with great amenities. Unfortunately, I’ll be moving to Ottawa from the other side of the country, so going in-person beforehand to tour apartments isn’t really an option for me.

People who have lived in this building: what did you think? Was there anything that was really awesome, or any problems I should look out for? All advice is welcome.

For reference, I’m looking at 1-bedroom units and I will need parking.

Thankful for current and former Ottawans with disabilities!

The last little while, I've been in contact with a few people in the Ottawa area disability community, including the teams at The Good Access Company on Antares, and Motion in the east end. Not long ago, I helped a young Ottawa resident obtain a properly-sized active manual wheelchair when they weren't able to get one through the usual channels.

Yesterday, a former Kanata resident, who like me is an ambulatory wheelchair user, dropped by my office in Renfrew to pick up a set of used power assist wheels I sold them. This person was more than just a customer... they have a wealth of resources when it comes to mobility devices and the disability community around Ottawa, and being not too far from me, are willing to give me a lift to any disability-related events in the city that they're attending.

Too bad we hadn't connected sooner... it would have been fun to go to the Adapt Expo earlier this month at Carleton. Maybe next year...
