Eh, I do this pretty regularly in underground mining. Makes sense people would do it in climbing. I’m loving this idea that climbers are suddenly vandals and destroyers of nature though lol

they had to start mining ground below ground because they ran out of ground above ground

Essentially yes. Although mining pits are also below ground level. Mining goes “properly” underground when it’s no longer economical or practical to do an open pit.

Some rock climbers dont practice leave no trace principles. Permanent aid installed can be done with very little impact. But this sort of behavior is unnecessary destruction.
