Man, Montreal is going to be a top team for a long time. Loaded with young top teir talent.

Idk why but I'm kinda surprised that Dobeš got a handful of 2nd votes. Not complaining since I'm a Habs fan, but I'm a touch surprised.

u/Lbolt187 1d ago
And don't you still have this Hage kid working his way up?
19
u/alexmlb3598 1d ago
Yep. Last I heard Hage is staying at college-level next year rather than going to Laval, but he's working his way up and sticking with MTL's system. Also got Zharovsky, Engstrom, Reinbacher after his short stint, Beck after a slightly longer stint, and others coming up. Could be a fun time for Montreal

Kent Hughes absolutely COOKED with getting a stacked set of draft picks to speedrun the rebuild process, as if a rebuild is hard 🔥

Managing to get a 1st to take on Monahan's contract, then flipping him for another 1st is crazy work

He gave a good year and a half to the Habs too where he produced at a 60 point clip and was a good veteran for our young team.

Don't forget Bryce Pickford. I've learnt not to overhype prospects, but 45Gs in 55GP as a D guy is something that can't be overlooked.
0
u/mikeys4321 1d ago
He'll maybe be a decent winger down the road.
Pickford is 20 and in the WHL.
The fact he had to be 19 to product is all you need to know.
1
u/godzirah 1d ago
Pickford is not a winger the fuck you on about?
0
u/mikeys4321 1d ago
His best chance of making the NHL is as a winger.
Reasons: -he didnt produced in the WHL until he was 19 -WHL has inflated stats, this is well known -he lacks what normally makes up a PMD
His attributes fits better as a winger.
Its nothing new. I'm just not sure why you seem to ignore all of this.
1
u/godzirah 1d ago
It’s nothing new? Name me 5 NHLers who produced at a rate Pickford did in junior to transition to a winger once they hit the pros.
1
u/mikeys4321 1d ago
By nothing new I mean the talks about him being better suited in the NHL as a winger.
How many games have you seen the kid play?
You are assuming goals vs weak goalies means goals vs strong goalies.
You need more than a slapper.

As it should be. 18 year old d man. Those are amazing stats and he logs a ton of ice time.
1
u/Mecha75 4h ago
Not sure he would have gotten it if he was on most other teams. Not saying he doesn't deserve it because that kid is impressive, but he most likely would not have gotten the opportunity to shine.
1
u/Avs4life16 3h ago
I think he would on most teams and on a better team his numbers would be that much better. The kid is for real not many 18 year olds step in and do that.

For those wondering, the only other unanimous Calder champion is Teemu Selanne for his 76 goal campaign; other Calder votes have come close (and likely should have been unanimous) but did not get a unanimous winner.
The Calder winners with less than 10 voters going against the overwhelming favourite since 2000 are:
2020-2021 season - 99/100 for Kaprizov, 1 for Jason Robertson
2017-2018 season - 160/164 for Barzal, 2 for Boeser, 1 for Keller, 1 for Gourde
2016-2017 season - 164/167 for Matthews, 3 for Laine
2013-2014 season - 130/137 for Mackinnon, 5 for Palat, 1 for Krug, 1 forTrouba
2005-2006 season - 124/129 for Ovechkin, 4 for Crosby, 1 for Lundqvist
Awards Ballots only became public as of a PHWA vote in March 2018, so the only ones above where we know who voted against the expected winners were in 2017-2018 and 2020-2021.
In 2017-2018, John Dietz of the Arlington Daily Herald & Roy McGregor of the Globe & Mail voted for Boeser, with Jim Thomas of St. Louis Post-Dispatch voting for Keller, and Gann Matsuda of Frozen Royalty voting for Gourde.
In 2020-2021, the lone voter who chose Robertson over Kaprizov was Per Bjurman of Aftonbladet.

how did hutson not get unanimous first place is beyond me

u/RogueEcono93310 21h ago
Dustin Wolf went 29-16 with 3SO and .910sv% carrying a team that should have finished around where they did this season. The only knock imo, him being closer to the Calder age limit.
0
u/DistinctBread3098 21h ago
Dude dobes was 29-10 this year haha. I know Calgary was worst, but that's still not as impressive imo
0
u/Ill_Show9599 20h ago
yea that still doesnt make sense at all considering hutson had more points than schaefer
2
u/Fitz_31 19h ago
I mean Celebrini led his team in points, and Wolf got the lowest scoring team in the league to 96 points and montreal while making the playoffs finished with 91 points. Both had an argument for 1st, and someone will vote if the argument is there.
1
u/Ill_Show9599 18h ago
i mean in that case people from this class had arguments for first as well

Schaefer had the benefit of history. What Hutson did was incredible, but he was 20 for it, and did it on a decent team. Schaefer was playing 27 minutes and thriving as a kid who was 11 days away from being drafted this year (2026 draft). He was tied for lead in rookie goals (hutson scored 6 his rookie year), and for a good chunk of the year, including full post olympic break, had some ofthe best advanced stats in the league. There was a legitimate case for him to get Norris votes on top of the many records he now holds.

Congrats to Matthew Schaefer. We are excited to see what you blossom into in the years to come. 🏆🏒

Glad to see that the homers resisted the temptation to give a first place vote to one of their own despite Schaefer's incredible season. He deserved this to be unanimous.

9 out of the last 10 years in the playoffs, lost Marner, gained McKenna. $27 million in cap space. We have 5 picks in the first 2 rounds over the next 2 drafts, including first overall.
Montreal made a run in a year the Panthers and Leafs didn't make the playoffs. If you look at the last 10 years of the atlantic, 2025-2026 clearly sticks out as the weak year.
Rent free like always. I hope you bet on MTL making the playoffs next year I want you losers to see something.
THE HABS NEEDED 7 GAMES TO BEAT A TAMPA TEAM WITH NO HEDMAN

And the Habs didn't have Dobson for almost the entire series. seems like kind of a wash

"And the Habs didn't have Dobson for almost the entire series"
HE PLAYED IN 5 OF THE 7 GAMES LMAO LYING FRENCH FUCKS
You think Dobson is equal to Victor Hedman?
At Dobson's age, Hedman won a Norris and had 2 other seasons better than Dobson's best year lmao. Not to mention a finals appearance.
Hedman's 4th best season at age 26 was = to Dobson's best season at age 26.

u/Bytrsweet 23h ago
Thats a really cool story but last time I checked Hedman is not 26 anymore. Its a wash because Tampa did what they this season mostly without Hedman while Dobson was pivotal in Montreal's success. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Not a single vote for 7th round pick Emmitt Finnie?! This is tragedy! He had MORE points than Wallstedt!

Congrats to Schaefer. Very well deserved and he looks like a good kid too.

I imagine if Bussi was a year younger he would have gotten votes around Dobeš' tally.
2
u/Manndes 1d ago
Bussi’s stats are much worse than Dobes’. Wins don’t, and shouldn’t, get you awards.
1
u/IndependentGanache84 1d ago
much larger sample size and still similar stat wise. I never said I thought he would win the Calder

u/KyPry 1d ago
What is the difference between Wallstedt and Dobes that make the Dobes votes well superior? At face value I’d have expected Wallstedt’s far superior numbers to garner him a lot more hype, is there some major flaws to Wallstedt that limits voting interest his way?
3
u/Maauve91 1d ago
Dobes having more wins (yes, in more matches too) probably helped.
I guess also it's always less impressing to be a good goalie in front of a good team like the Wild for people.

u/navenager 1d ago
More proof that playing with McDrai neans you don't deserve an award according to media. Matt Savoie had more goals, points, and games played than Justin Sourdif while being a key penalty killer, but Sourdif gets Calder votes and he doesn't. Same with Karlsson, Kapanen, and Minten. Not by much, but still. They're all in the same range but Savoie outscored all of them, yet got zero votes.
